Jewish genetic diseases are a group of diseases for which screening is recom-
mended in the Ashkenazi population. One in two Jews is at risk of being a
carrier for 101 preventative Jewish genetic diseases. Tay-Sachs is an inherited
genetic disorder — invariably fatal — that mainly affects Jewish infants. It
is inherited from two healthy parents who both carry the gene, and there is
a one-in-four chance that a baby will develop the disease if both parents are
carriers. A simple blood test can determine whether an individual carries
the Tay-Sachs gene. All Jewish people considering having children should
arrange for Tay-Sachs testing. Late onset Tay-Sachs disease is a degenerative
genetic disorder that causes debilitating physical and/or mental symptoms.
