FRIEDMAN Dr. HENRY L., (“Hank”) of Bryn Mawr,
PA, 94, passed away of natural caus-
es on May 30, 2023 at Bryn Mawr
Hospital in Bryn Mawr, PA. Hank was
born in 1929 to his parents Solomon
and Frieda Friedman of Coney Island,
NY. Hank was the proud older brother
of the late Shelley Singer, who he liked
to recount how he asked his moth-
er for her. Hank earned his Bachelor
of Science degree in Chemical
Engineering from the City College
of New York in 1950; his M.S. from
Clarkson University and his PhD in
Chemistry from the Illinois Institute of
Technology. He had a wonderful ca-
reer as a chemist, spanning over 60
years and in 2013, received an award
from the American Chemical Society
for his life-long contribution. Hank’s
career began as aerothermodynam-
ics engineer for General Electric and
ended as a Senior textile research sci-
entist at the Textile Research Institute
in Princeton, NJ from which he retired
at the age of 70. Hank was married in
1952 to Toby Kranzler Friedman and
lived in West Mount Airy on Arbutus
Street. They had three daughters;
Sari, Judy and Debbie. Toby passed
away and in 1979 Hank reconnected
with a fellow Arbutus Street neigh-
bor, Linda Levy. They were married
in 1984 and were happily together
for 42 years. Hank adored Linda and
let everyone know it. Hank and Linda
discovered their love for Italy, refer-
ring to themselves as “Italophiles” and
traveled there 28 times. They had sea-
son subscriptions to the Philadelphia
Orchestra and the Philadelphia Ballet,
the Metropolitan Opera in New York for
22 many years, the Opera Philadelphia
and were members of the Philadelphia
Art Museum. Hank and Linda were
very charitable when it came to the
arts and other important causes. Hank
was a classical music aficionado. His
daughter, Debbie, bragged that he
could recognize any classical music
piece within three notes and she is
pretty sure that this was completely
true. Hank shared this life-long love of
music with anyone who was open to
it. He loved classical music more than
any other genre. Linda passed away
from natural causes in 2021. Hank is
survived by his children, Sari Marsilio,
Judith Wiseman and Debbie Sellitto
and Debbie’s spouse, Joseph Vidich,
and his step-children, Karen Levy,
Jan Durlacher and Matthew Levy
and Matthew’s spouse, Heidi; and
his grandchildren, Phillip Wiseman
and his spouse, Ash; Benjamin and
Jessica Sellitto; Caroline and Peter
Durlacher; Kate and Kyle Levy and the
late Joshua Marsilio; and his nieces
Dawn Gertler and Leisa Kateb. In lieu
of flowers, donations may be made to
the Philadelphia Orchestra in Henry’s
honor. 1 South Broad Street, 14th
Floor, Phila., PA 19107.

PARMET Dr. SIDNEY B., age 99, of Allentown
died Sunday, May 28, 2023 in his home.

He was the beloved husband of the
late Dr. Harriet Parmet (nee Leibowitz)
for over 72 years, loving father of Dr.

Howard Parmet (Marilyn) and Dr.

Jonathan “Yoni” Parmet (Dena), devot-
ed grandfather to Andrew, Daniel and
Tamar. He was the dear brother of the
late Dr. Morton Parmet (Dorothy).

Born in Pottsville, PA in 1924, Sidney
(affectionately known as “Puz”) was
the son of the late Benjamin and Anna
Parmet. His parents owned the Model
Millinery Shop in Pottsville, where they
lived in the apartment above the store.

Sidney’s father passed away just before
his Bar Mitzvah, and his mother contin-
ued to run the business while raising her
two boys with an appreciation for hard
work, a commitment to Jewish values,
and a strong moral compass.

Sidney enlisted in the U.S. Army at age
18, wanting to do his part when he heard
about the atrocities going on in Europe.

He was a Private First Class in the 157th
regiment of the 45th Infantry Division.

He trained at Camp Rucker in Macon,
Georgia, and was assigned the job of
carrying the magazine cartridges for
the Browning automatic rifle (BAR). He
headed overseas on a cargo ship, and
landed in Casablanca in Nov, 1943. After
traveling by train across North Africa to
Oran, Tunisia he went by ship to Naples,
Italy, and received the order that his di-
vision was assigned to land at Anzio. He
landed on D+3. His group was on the
front lines for about 30 days, and they
suffered heavy casualties. While he was
carrying wounded in a gully, with a tiger
tank bearing down on his Company, he
was captured by the Germans.

Eventually he was brought to Stalag 7B
in Memmingen Germany, where he was
interned for 15 months. His mother was
notified that he was missing in action in
February 1944. Four months later, she
received a telegram that he was alive
but had been captured and was a pris-
oner of the Nazis. When the war ended,
Sidney and his fellow prisoners were
liberated, and he returned home in May
1945. Sidney often recalled the time he
was reunited with his mother as one of
his most precious memories.

Sidney was honorably discharged and
received the following awards and
decorations: Bronze Star, Prisoner of
War Medal, European-African-Middle
Eastern Campaign Medal with three
Bronze Service Stars, World War II
Victory Medal, Combat Infantryman
Badge, Honorable Service Lapel Button,
Good Conduct Medal.

Sidney attended Muhlenberg College
and Temple University Dental School
on the GI Bill. He received his Doctor of
Dental Surgery degree in 1951. He es-
tablished his own dental practice in 1957
in Northampton, PA, where he practiced
for over 40 years. While at Temple, he
met his life partner Harriet Leibowitz,
and they were married in 1950. They
moved to Allentown in 1957, along with
Harriet’s mother “Bubbie Belle”.
