Because of Social Media Complaints
BESTSELLING AUTHORS Elin Hilderbrand and
Casey McQuiston removed references to Anne Frank
and Israel from their novels after reading complaints
on social media, which created controversy in the
literary world, JTA reported.

Hilderbrand’s new novel, “Golden Girl,” contained
a line of dialogue in which two teenage girls discuss a
plan for one of them to hide in her friend’s attic. One
girl jokes that she would be “like Anne Frank.”
Some Instagram posters said the joke was
antisemitic and demanded that Hilderbrand
apologize. She did so, saying the passage would be
removed from future printings.

In McQuiston’s 2019 novel “Red, White & Royal
Blue,” the president jokes that the U.S. ambassador
to the United Nations “said something idiotic about
Israel, and now I have to call Netanyahu and person-
ally apologize.”
Some Twitter users said that even mentioning
Israel in fiction “normalizes” the occupation of
Palestine. McQuiston said the line would be changed
for future printings.

The authors’ decisions to remove the passages
from future printings have received criticism from
some in the literary world.

A journalist who wrote “Free Gaza and Palestine” on
former Warsaw Ghetto walls was tasked with teaching
British teachers union members about antisemitism,
JTA reported.

Ewa Jasiewicz, who spray-painted the slogan
in Poland in 2010, gave three sessions titled
“Understanding Antisemitism,” the Jewish News of
London reported on June 8.

Before the sessions, Jasiewicz asked participants to
read materials that “challenge common Eurocentric
understanding of antisemitism” and prepare to hear
“four prominent black British Jews discuss their
experiences of racism in the Jewish community.”
Marie van der Zyl, the president of the Board
of Deputies of British Jews, called Jasiewicz’s role
“grotesque” in a letter to the teachers union.

The liberal social justice advocacy group Bend the
Arc initiated the letter, which was signed by 19 national
groups, including HIAS, the Anti-Defamation League,
the National Council for Jewish Women, Jewish Women
International and the Jewish Council for Public Affairs,
as well as organizations representing the Reform,
Conservative and Reconstructionist movement. Many
state-level Jewish groups also signed the letter.
