JOSEPH STEIN
After a courageous and determined battle
against cancer, Sandra Diane Stein (nee
Segal), age 80, passed away peacefully at her
home, surrounded by her loving family and
her devoted caregivers. Born in South Phil-
adelphia, she graduated with honors from
Philadelphia High School for Girls and was
awarded a scholarship to attend the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania. After receiving her
Bachelor of Arts degree, she received anoth-
er scholarship to attend Temple University
School of Law, making her one of the few
women admitted at the time. She completed
her law degree, raised her family, became a
civic leader, founded the first Women’s pro-
Israel National Political Action Committee
(WIN. PAC), served on the Senate Judiciary
Staff of U.S. Senator Arlen Specter of
Pennsylvania, and eventually practiced as one
of the leading asset recovery experts at Rob-
bins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP represent-
ing hundreds of institutional investors around
the country. Working with the late Senator
Arlen Specter, she was a strong advocate of
investor and consumer protections, transpar-
ency in government, and criminal justice re-
form. She was instrumental in helping pass
the Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of
1995, and then went on to help co-found the
Institute for Law and Economic Policy (ILEP).
Mrs. Stein was an active member of the Jew-
ish community, and a supporter of numer-
ous charitable causes. Her leadership with
the Simon Wiesenthal Center and Stand With
Us fighting anti-semitism on college cam-
puses stands out. She was also a strong and
passionate supporter of the State of Israel,
having served on the National Board of
AIPAC, and various other pro-Israel efforts to
ensure the safety and security of America’s
strongest ally in the Middle East. Her love for
the State of Israel never wavered and her
Zionism was shown through countless
events hosted at her home. The Chabad of
Bel Air Sukkah party hosted with her daugh-
ters was also legendary. She is survived by
her daughters and sons-in-law, Laura Stein
and Sam Goldfeder, Leigh Stein and Joe Mc-
Namara, and by four beloved grandchildren,
Michael, Sabrina, Jacob, and Blythe. Also
surviving are her brothers, Robert of Boals-
burg, Pennsylvania and Jack of Traverse City,
Michigan and their families. Her parents,
Morris and Rose Segal of Philadelphia, pre-
deceased her. The family wishes to acknow-
ledge the compassionate assistance given to
Mrs. Stein by her devoted caregivers, espe-
cially Erna Melikyan. A private funeral will
take place at Montefiore Cemetery in Jenkin-
town, Pennsylvania. The family suggests
contributions in her memory to the Simon
Wiesenthal Center or Chabad of Bel Air CA as
their efforts were very important to her. A
memorial service in Los Angeles will be held
in March 2020.
