GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S RAPHAEL-SACKS SCHUMAN Isadore (“Izzy,” “Ted”) Schuman died in his home on Sept. 20 at the age of 88. Isadore, a pharmacist, business maverick, and philan- thropist, was also a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He is sur- vived by his wife Rochelle, daughter Dana- Lee (Jeff Refold), and grandchildren Jaxson and Logan of the Pacific Palisades California. He is also father of Michael (Debra), Robin (Greg Rapport), and Kerry (Jill) and grand- father of Jesse, Gavin, Jackie, Anna, and Eth- an, and great grandfather of Eli. Schuman is best known for changing the dynamics of the pharmacy industry in Pennsylvania, when he introduced the first discount drug stores. For decades, Schuman forged a battle with the Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy because he offered lower-priced prescription drugs. Pre- viously, prices were set clandestinely by the Board and area drug stores, causing numer- ous battles for Schuman with the State li- censing board and competing pharmacies, when he lowered prices at his first drug store and did not submit to pressure to stop. Schu- man also challenged Pennsylvania’s Blue Laws when he dared to sell non-prescription items in his drugstores on Sunday. At that time, virtually all non-essential items, were prohibited from sale on Sunday. While these innovations are all commonplace today, Schuman led the battle starting back in the early 1950s. His commitment to customers and lower-priced prescriptions were appreci- ated by community members, which led to the successful Schuman Drug chain in Pennsylvania. Schuman is also known for his many charitable contributions. For example, as an alumni of Philadelphia School of Phar- macy (now the University of Sciences in Phil- adelphia), he established a scholarship in honor of a friend. He also funded the Albert Einstein Medical Center to build a kitchen to serve patients and their families. He was the local Chairman of the March of Dimes. In ad- dition, he and his wife, Rochelle, were mem- bers of the Board of Directors for the Nation- al Tay-Sachs Society and many other organ- izations.
