FOMALONT Robert Fomalont M.D., of Cranbury, New Jer- sey, passed away peacefully at his home sur- rounded by his family on September 27th, 2020 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 85. Born in Philadelphia to Celia and Jack Fomalont, Bob (often referred to as Rob) grew up in West Philadelphia and graduated with friendships that lasted a life- time from West Philadelphia High School in 1952. He completed undergraduate studies at Temple University in 1956. After receiving his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in 1960, he was commissioned in the United States Navy where he served in the Medical Corps as a Lieutenant. Following his service, Dr. Fomalont was a founding physi- cian of Princeton-Nassau Pediatrics in Prin- ceton, NJ. He remained with this growing medical practice his entire career, caring first for thousands of children and then for their children a generation later. He was loved by his patients and their parents – sharing a smile, or a joke, and often wearing a brightly colored tie that told the kids he was there for them. Dr. Fomalont became a pioneer in the emerging specialties of Attention Deficit Dis- order and learning disabilities and helped countless children address these previously unmet medical needs. In 2004 he retired to a new home in Cranbury, NJ. Dr. Fomalont lived a full life filled with love together with his wife and high school sweetheart, Bobbi (nee Narish), until she predeceased him in 2016. They traveled to Africa, went on cruises, and thought Paris was the most ro- mantic city in the world. You could often find them enjoying a fine meal and a Broadway show, opera, or ballet in NYC, or dining in and around Princeton before attending a per- formance at the Arts at McCarter Theater. Be- ing an avid reader, his home was filled with stacks of newspapers, magazines, medical journals, and books of all genres. Dr. Fomalont was also involved with CWW and The Old Guard of Princeton, NJ for many years. For decades after retiring, Dr. Fomalont was often approached in public venues by former patients, friends, and ac- quaintances who were thrilled to see him and to remember and thank him for how he had cared for them. Dr. Fomalont thrived being surrounded by family. After marrying Bobbi in 1975, their blended family included eight children; Michael Fomalont, Joel Fomalont, Susan (Tom) Fomalont Sloan, Bud (Sindey) Dranoff, Sue Sabogal, Dede (Peter) Horowicz, Lisa (Michael) Connors, and Judi (Harvey) Malove. Along with their spouses and 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, Dr. Fomalont’s “immediate’ family included 35 people. He will be greatly missed. She in- stilled a joie de vivre in all those around her and was an inspiration to many. Prof. Prywes was born in Warsaw, Poland in 1925. He immigrated with his family to pre-state Israel in 1933 and later attended the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology studying Electrical Engineering. He served in the Hagana and then the begin- nings of the Israeli Navy. He moved to the U.S. for graduate school, first at Carnegie In- stitute of Technology (now Carnegie Mellon University) and then at Harvard University where he obtained a Ph.D. in Applied Phys- ics in 1954 before there were departments of computer science. Dr. Prywes first worked on early electronic computers at Univac in the 1950s, leading the computing unit for the LARC computer, which was one of the world’s first supercomputers. In 1958 he took a job on the faculty of the Moore School of Electrical Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania where he was a professor in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences for 38 years. Noah’s early doctoral students were some of the first to receive Ph.D.’s from a Computer Science depart- ment. Noah was a pioneer in many of the most significant waves of computer techno- logy over the past half century. In the 1960s he created one of the first relational database management systems (Multi-List). In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he advanced and commercialized timesharing, the prede- cessor to today’s cloud computing. In the 1980s and 1990s, he was at the forefront of automatic programming, nonprocedural spe- cification systems and reverse engineering, and the application of these technologies to parallel and distributed computing. In the early 2000s, he developed innovative speech technology for use in telephony. Noah ap- plied his technology through several busi- nesses to a wide range of domains—from early automated payroll systems to financial reporting for Wall Street banks as well as in scientific computing and real-time systems for aerospace and the military, particularly Naval systems. Noah published prolifically, was awarded numerous patents, and was a Fellow of the IEEE Computer Society. Dr. Pry- wes was an active member of Lower Merion Synagogue in Bala-Cynwyd, PA, once serving as president. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dr. Ruth W.
