KATZ KERNIS
KRAWITZ LEVITAN
Bernard N. Katz, Esquire, January 12, 1928-
October 5, 2019. The founder of Meranze,
Katz, and Gaudioso P.C. and dedicated his
professional life as a champion of the rights
and quality of life for tens of thousands of
working men, women and their families in-
cluding the Pressmen, Drivers, Mailers and
Paper Handlers at the Inquirer and Daily
News. Bernard (“Bernie”) attended law
school immediately upon completing service
in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He founded
the firm over 60 years ago as a result of his
deep commitment to and belief in the labor
movement, and devoted his entire profes-
sional career to improving the lives of work-
ing people and protecting the rights of Labor
organizations. Recognized as one of the pre-
eminent labor lawyers in the country, Bernie
served on numerous governmental commis-
sions pertaining to labor law, including the
Hickman Commission which was respons-
ible for the design, drafting and ultimate pas-
sage of Pennsylvania Act 195, which brought
Union representation to public employees.

Bernie taught for many years at the Temple
University School of Law in its post-graduate
law program, concentrating in Labor law and
Labor arbitration and was responsible for
mentoring and training generations of Union
side labor lawyers who followed in his path.

Bernie was licensed in the states of
Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and
practiced before the Supreme Court of the
United States, the U. S. Courts of Appeals for
the 2nd, 3rd, 7th, 11th and District of
Columbia Circuits, and numerous Federal
District Courts, as well as the National Labor
Relations Board, Federal Mediation Concili-
ation Service and the American Arbitration
Association. He was directly responsible for
innumerable legal decisions shaping the
workplace life and standards of living that
working men, women and their families en-
joy today. Dubbed “Bernie the Attorney” by
his clients, they knew they had in him a tire-
less advocate who lived the values of the
trade union movement. A giant in the labor
movement, his passing marks the end of an
era. Bernie was also a devoted, loving, gener-
ous and caring husband, father, grandfather
and great-grandfather. Whether it was spe-
cial occasions, sports competitions, school
shows, dance recitals, family dinners or just
day to day life, Bernie was always there to
support his family and share his excitement
and joy in their accomplishments. His wit,
passion for life and humor were infectious as
he lived the qualities of grace in accomplish-
ments and perseverance when overcoming
obstacles. An avid ocean swimmer and exer-
cise enthusiast, nothing gave him more
pleasure than sharing athletic pursuits with
his children and later his grandchildren. He is
survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Nat-
aleen, his son (and law partner) Michael and
his wife Sharon, his daughter (and law part-
ner) Elissa and her husband Joe, his grand-
children Dan and Shoshana and their
spouses Cassie and Adam, his grandchildren
