FIELDS DEATH NOTICES
FIELDS Regina Fields (nee Stanger), passed away on
October 7, 2019 at the age of 96 surrounded
by her loving family. She was born on May 7,
1923 in Stanislawow, Poland. She was prede-
ceased by her parents, Emanuel and Yetta
Stanger, and a younger sister, Esterra at the
outbreak of WWII. After an idyllic childhood,
the war changed the course of Regina’s life.

She followed the admonition of her mother
that a member of her family must survive.

Although the rest of her extended family per-
ished in the war, she survived by hiding for
22 months in the attic of the home of a right-
eous gentile. In 1945, her city was liberated
by the Russians. Among the soldiers was a
Jewish Officer, Dr. Philip M. Fields. Her liber-
ator became her husband in 1946. Their
daughter Edna was born in a German dis-
placed persons camp in 1947, where they
resided for two years before immigrating to
the United States. Symbolically, they arrived
in New York Harbor on July 4 th , 1949 to be-
gin their new life. They settled in Phil-
adelphia where daughters Estella and De-
borah were born. Regina was an educator at
Har Zion Nursery School from 1965 to 1970.

She continued teaching at Temple Adath Is-
rael until her retirement in 1993. Teaching
and interacting with young children was the
joy of her life. Regina was a beloved member
of the Philadelphia Main Line community.

Because of her unique background, she was
called upon to memorialize her story, which
was recorded and distributed to children at
bar and bat mitzvahs. Her life’s story was
also recorded by Gratz College, the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania, Yad Vashem in Is-
rael, and by the Spielberg Shoah
Foundation’s Oral History Project in Califor-
nia. Regina was preceded in death by her
husband Philip of 38 years, her companion
Myer Adler, who passed away in 1995, and
her close friend Sam Chirsan who passed
away in 2010. She is survived by children
Edna Metzger, Dr. Estella and Peter Graeffe,
Deborah and Dr. Arthur Kravitz, nine grand-
children including six spouses, and twelve
great grandchildren. Memorial donations may

GORDESKY HELLER
Samuel Aaron Gordesky, Somers Point, NJ at
age 98 was known to family and friends as
Sol. Born in Philadelphia, he was preceded in
death by his wife Allene and his three older
siblings Edward Gordy, Rita Chorney and Lil-
lian Podell. Sol was an avid tennis player and
that’s an understatement. He continued to
play until the age of 88 when he absolutely
had to quit because he just couldn’t see the
ball. A consummate humanitarian, Sol often
stepped in to help others who could not help
themselves by showing them they could suc-
ceed. For example, he helped illiterate adults
learn to read and assisted new Americans
from many different countries find meaning-
ful lives in the United States. Sol always held
a special place in his heart for the State of Is-
rael and after he retired from business, he
served in the Israeli army through the Volun-
teers for Israel Program. He was a tireless
advocate for equal justice, civil rights and for
any issue which he saw as “just plain
wrong.” More often than not, he was drafted
into leadership roles preferring to work dili-
gently behind the scenes without fanfare. He
loved Judaism and was an ardent supporter
of a long list of Jewish causes throughout his
life. Sol will be missed by his two daughters
Joan G. Kaufman and Susan Gordesky (aka
Joanie & Susie), son-in-law Louis Hecht, Jr.,
his three grandchildren David Kaufman, Alex-
ander Bruner, Katelyn Bruner, nieces and
nephews and many friends. He will be lov-
ingly remembered by his remarkable team of
dedicated care givers and their families for
the past three years.

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.

The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.
