RONKIN ROTH
SKIDDELL SPIEGEL
Sheila Ronkin, 61, who worked to develop
medicines that improve the lives of patients
has died. Dr. Ronkin, of Philadelphia and
Longport, died September 25 th of advanced
cancer. Dr. Ronkin graduated from Cherry
Hill High School East (1974), earned her BA
in psychology at Cornell University (Ithaca,
NY in 1978) and MD at UMDNJ-NJMS (Ne-
wark, NJ in 1982). She was offered intern-
ship and residency training in Obstetrics and
Gynecology at Temple University Hospital
after the program director, in jest, consulted
a current resident, showing him index cards
with photos of 5 qualified candidates for the
program, asking, ‘Which of these should we
accept’? That resident, Dr. Andrew Gerson,
selected her card, welcomed her to the pro-
gram in July, 1982. They married (Oct, 1983)
and became the parents of a daughter
(Lyssa) in 1985 and a son (Alex) in 1991. Her
husband, daughter and son were always the
center of her life. Dr. Ronkin completed a fel-
lowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at Jeffer-
son University Hospital and directed and/or
provided maternity care, prenatal diagnosis
and ultrasound imaging for pregnant women
for over a decade at area hospitals including
Jefferson, Hahnemann, Chester-Crozer, The
Chester County Hospital and Brandywine
Hospital. While working and raising her fam-
ily, Dr. Ronkin returned to school in 1996 and
earned an MBA in strategic planning at Haub
School of Business of St. Joseph’s Uni-
versity. She happened to spot a Memorial
Day Weekend employment ad in the Inquirer
for a position at Wyeth (Radnor, PA) for a
Medical Director in Women’s Health and
began a second career in Clinical Research
and Development. Over two decades, she
contributed in small or large ways, to devel-
opment of a wide range of new medicines for
new indications and new indications for ap-
proved medicines in multiple therapeutic
areas. Pfizer acquired Wyeth in 2009 and she
stayed with the company, advancing to the
role of Vice President and Clinical Head for
Rare Diseases. Upon Pfizer’s reorganization
in 2016, she continued her work to bring new
medicines to physicians and their patients
with BioMarin, a California-based biopharma-
ceutical innovator focusing on treatments for
rare diseases driven by genetic causes. She
was an avid reader, knitter, weaver, enjoyed
travel, took long walks through the streets of
Philadelphia and was engaged in current
political discourse. Dr. Ronkin is survived by
her husband Dr. Andrew Gerson, daughter
Lyssa Gerson Guy (Nir Guy), son Alexander
Gerson, and father Seymour Ronkin. Contri-
butions in her memory may be made to Phil-
abundance or the Mitzvah Food Pantry.

graveside to celebrate Ethel and then later at
the home of Alan and Wendy Goldfuss. Ethel
is greatly missed by her 3 surviving children:
Meryl (Michael Joblin), David (Mary Harris-
on), Wendy (Alan Goldfuss). her 9 grandchil-
dren (Evan, Alana, Jamie, Andy, Molly, Brett,
Julie, Jewels, and Nathaniel), and her 13,
soon to be 14 great grandchildren. A wonder-
ful homemaker, who made dinner every night
along with constant birthday and holiday cel-
ebrations, she also became a reading therap-
ist after her children were grown. In the late
1970s, Ethel became an advocate for healthy
diet and lifestyle, in order to ward off heart
bypass surgery faced by her her husband,
Russ. She was an active member of
Women's American ORT and Hadassah,
serving in many leadership roles and on their
boards. She was extremely well read and of-
ten led book groups well into her 80's. She
loved cultural and culinary events. Her heart
and spirit were always open to family, friends
and even strangers as she was in the words
of her friends, “the hostess with the most-
ess”! She demonstrated the highest moral
values and stressed the importance of educa-
tion, volunteerism, Jewish practice and toler-
ance. She was one of five fabulous female
octogenarians featured in “Bubbies in the
Burbs”, a short documentary that was shown
to Hadassah groups in PA and Florida. Born
in Philadelphia in 1929, Ethel married Robert
"Russ" Harrison in 1948. They lived in Over-
brook Park until 1960 with their 4 children
and then moved to Havertown. At age 64,
Ethel became a widow and moved to Latches'
Lane condominium, where she resided until
her death October 12, 2017. She lived a
long, happy, mostly healthy, fiercely inde-
pendent, vibrant, and involved existence until
the last year of her life when the obstacles of
aging increased and diminished her quality of
life. We are blessed that she went quickly
without suffering and are grateful for the time
we had with her and what we learned from
her about cherishing life's blessings. Her
memory is a blessing for all that knew her.
