ABRAMS DEATH NOTICES ABRAMS Phyllis Leatrice Abrams (nee Berlant), age 86, died on October 2, 2017. She was a retired teacher who resided in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. Mother of Lawrence Abrams (Susan Torbohn), Ellen Abrams (Kevin Baker), and Sharon Abrams (Matthew Brinck- erhoff); sister of Sandra (Dr. Bruce) Haskin; and grandmother of Ari Ben-Avram, Anik Brinckerhoff, and Jackson Brinckerhoff. Con- tributions in her memory may be made to the Philadelphia High School for Girls. GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS BLACKMAN Zehava Blackman, Hebrew teacher for over 40 years. “An amazing teacher…a wonder- ful mentor…a special lady…made a pro- found difference in the lives of so many.” These are just a few of the comments from friends, colleagues, and students marking the passage of Zehava Blackman, who passed away on September 28, 2017. When Zehava’s children met the funeral director to make arrangements, his first words were, “Of course I know your mother, she taught both my children in Hebrew School.” No matter where Zehava or her children went, they would bump into former students and par- ents who adored her. Zehava taught Hebrew, religion, and Jewish life for more than 40 years at Beth Sholom Religious School, and at the Perelman Jewish Day School for 17 years, as well as in adult education classes. Her teaching, and the impact she had on so many students for so many years was just one aspect of a dramatic life. Zehava was born in what was then Palestine. Her par- ents were ardent Zionists and moved from Lithuania in the early 1900’s to settle in Bat Galim, Haifa. Zehava grew up on the beach as a “daughter of the waves” (English for Bat Galim), was a teenager during Israel’s war of Independence and grew up alongside the State of Israel. She attended the prestigious Reali private school in Haifa (one of the coun- try’s oldest private schools), was a champi- on swimmer in her teens, was a member of the scouts and the early Israeli military, and received her teaching certificate through the Israeli army. In search of a new adventure, she took a long boat journey to the US in 1955 to visit her brother and his family who were living in Camden, New Jersey while he was attending school for engineering. She made the most of her visit, finding new friends, touring the East Coast sites, and then meeting her future husband, Daniel Black- man, in Philadelphia. She decided to stay in the US, married Dan in 1956, settled in Phil- adelphia, and by 1960 had two children, Dav- id and JoAnn. Zehava began her teaching ca- reer in 1961 at Congregation Beth Sholom in Elkins Park, and won numerous awards over the years, including special recognition from the Jewish Board of Education, Beth Sholom, and the Perelman Jewish Day School. She was a mentor to many young teachers, and will live on in the love of Hebrew and Israel she inspired in hundreds and hundreds of children, most of whom are now parents and grandparents. She also wrote a book on teaching Hebrew entitled “Safar Hatmunot”. Zehava adored her husband Dan, who passed away in 2010, her children David and JoAnn, her grandchildren Harry and Zoe, and her son-in-law Robert. Contributions in Zehava’s blessed memory can be made to the Zehava Blackman Consecration Fund at Beth Sholom Synagogue in Elkins Park.
