Helen Dolores Lamm (nee Sporkin) was born
on August 13, 1927, to A.L. Sporkin and
Theresa Behrman. Her dear Sister in Arms,
Alice Antoinette Sporkin, forged an unbroken
bond to overcome the hurdles of life togeth-
er, after their mother Theresa, died at the
young age of 34. Helen and Alice loved their
father deeply and Aunt Anna, a governess,
second mother, hired to care for them and
provide a strong female role model with mor-
al rectitude. The loss of her mother at the
tender age of eight (8) years on the operat-
ing table on Mother’s Day was the defining
moment of Helen’s life. She vowed and prac-
ticed a philosophy of living life to the fullest,
which she did just that. Two husbands, 6
grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, houses
in Oak Lane, Rydal, and Ventnor, she had it
all. Persistence and True Grit and a fearless
inner toughness took her past the goal line,
again and again. She loved the Portland Av-
enue Beach and Ocean with her entire being.
They were and are One. Add to that a family
she built and loved, friends, parties, a strong
martini balanced by a stinger, class and style,
travel, the hairdresser, someone to philo-
sophize with, the next project, and you have
Helen’s life, examined, enjoyed, protected by
impenetrable walls. Love practiced every day
in every breath. Helen is the mother of
Jonathan Lamm, Anthony L. Lamm (Karen)
and Madeline L. Specter (Eric). Devoted
grandmother of Michael D. Lamm (Simone),
RachaelL. Crowley (Micah), Alexander D.
Lamm (Hannah), Daniel J. Specter, Matthew

PERELMAN PEARLSTEIN
It is with much love and profound sadness
that we report the passing of Joan Ostrum
Pearlstein of Philadelphia on October 25th,
peacefully surrounded by her family, at the
age of 83. Joan was a woman of many in-
terests: an avid reader, an active member of
Beth Am Israel synagogue, a devoted sports
fan, and an athlete herself. When she wasn’t
playing tennis or golf you could see her root-
ing for the Eagles or passionately following
the Phillies. She had been a baseball fan
since she was a girl, when she and a friend
founded and were co-presidents of the Lou
Limmer Fan Club (of the old Philadelphia
A’s), of which they were the only two mem-
bers. Joan was the center of her extended
family, and especially cherished her special
relationship with her six grandchildren. As a
mother she spent endless hours driving her
kids to and from their practices and watch-
ing every single game, and did the same as a
grandmother. Her generosity and love went
beyond words. Joan Hannah Ostrum was
born on December 24, 1937 in Germantown,
and grew up above her father’s pharmacy,
where as a little girl she would assist making
milkshakes in the old-fashioned soda foun-
tain. She graduated with a degree in Educa-
tion from Temple in 1958 and began teach-
ing at Stokley Elementary School in Straw-
berry Mansion. In 1960 Joan loaned a dress
to a girlfriend who had a date with a young
med student, and dragged him over to Joan’s
house to show it off. Two weeks later that
med student, Phil Pearlstein, asked Joan out
on their first date. They went on to marry and
spend 60 wonderful years together. Joan was
incredibly resilient and overcame the loss of
her own mother as a small child to create a
wonderful life for herself, her husband, and
their three beautiful children. She and Phil
loved the Jersey shore, and spent much of
their free time in a house they bought in
Ventnor, NJ in 1966. In addition to raising
their children and overseeing Phil’s medical
practice, Joan always had an artistic eye and
an elegant sense of style, which led to a re-
warding career as an antique dealer. Keeping
fit was also a priority: Every morning for 40
years Joan and her dear friend Bobbie would
walk for miles, then join the regulars at Mur-
ray’s Delicatessen for breakfast. Joan was an
intensely strong woman. Before succumbing
to a glioblastoma, she had survived two pre-
vious cancers and was even hit by a car in
2019 and walked away without a scratch, at-
tending her usual Pilates class that same af-
ternoon. She always talked about how lucky
she was to have such a loving and close fam-
ily, and fought till the end to be with them.
Because of that determination, in the last six
months of her life she was present to celeb-
rate various family milestones, including an
elementary school graduation, two college
graduations, her 60th wedding anniversary,
and the weddings of her two oldest grand-
children. She was very insistent how grateful
she was to have had such a great life. Joan is
survived by her husband Philip, her children
Robert (Cindy), Ferne (Robert Edwards), and
James (Karen), her grandchildren Haley (Billy
Haberstroh), Ian (Jenny), Alex, Jake, Jenna,
and Eloise, and her sister Frances Ostrum
Gould. She was pre-deceased by her mother
Freda, her father Isadore, and her sister Shir-
ley Ostrum Tapper. Graveside services were
held on Wednesday, October 27, 2021, at
Haym Salomon Memorial Park, Frazer, PA.
Memorial donations may be made to a char-
ity of your choice in Joan’s memory.

Sylvia Perelman (nee Garrett) was born on
July 4, 1929, and died October 17, 2021. She
was the beloved wife of the late David; loving
mother to Don, Rich, and Caryn, and to their
spouses, Elise, Justine, and Ian; adoring
grandmother to Liz (Tanuj), James, Ben,
Sarah, Isabel, and Conor; and delighted great
grandmother to Nina. In addition, she was a
much-loved sister of Len Garrett and sister-
in-law of Judy Garrett, Helen and the late
Mike Goetz, and Victor Goetz, as well as a
loved and admired cousin and aunt to many
nieces and nephews. Sylvia and David met on
a group date at Longwood Gardens though
both were there with other people. They in-
stantly hit it off and were married in less than
a year. In her late 30’s, after having three
children, Sylvia completed a Masters in Eco-
nomics at the University of Pennsylvania.
She became a professor of Economics at
Bucks County Community College where she
was also an active member and leader of the
teachers’ union, leading the union through
two successful strikes. In retirement, she vo-
lunteered at the Women’s Center of Mont-
gomery County in Norristown, PA. Sylvia
worked on the Crisis Hotline, handling diffi-
cult and emotional calls with the same ten-
derness that she brought to all of her person-
al dealings. Later in life, Sylvia and David
moved to the Hill at Whitemarsh, where they
enjoyed making many new friends. Sylvia es-
pecially enjoyed not having to cook meals
every night and she frequently celebrated din-
ners with a glass (or two) of wine. Sylvia
loved to travel and did so extensively. She
went to Cuba with her brother in the 1950’s
and later traveled to many countries with her
husband, and then with children, grandchil-
dren, friends, and other family. If you wanted
to go somewhere, Sylvia was always game to
go along. One of her favorite places was Ix-
tapa, Mexico, where she went every January
for decades, meeting up with many of the
same people. Sylvia had many interests. She
loved reading and was a long-time member
of the Philadelphia Great Books Council and
an active book discussant into her 90s. She
enjoyed the opera, and frequently traveling to
New York with her friends for a day and night
of it. She was also an avid tennis player and
fan, often staying up late to watch the US
Open matches. Sylvia took great pride in all
of her grandkids and loved them all dearly.
One of her favorite pastimes was being with
them, whether shopping, getting manicures,
having dinner, or just taking a walk. One of
her greatest thrills was meeting her first great
grandchild, Nina Sylvia, who was born in Au-
gust 2021 and came to visit in October. Her
joy at seeing and holding Nina was unpar-
alleled. At her core, Sylvia was a kind and
deeply caring woman who took pleasure in
the company and happiness of her family and
many friends. Contributions in her memory
can be made to the Women’s Center of Mont-
gomery County, Pennsylvania. A memorial
service will be held in the spring.
