SCHOENHOLTZ Harold Schoenholtz, born on August 6, 1918
in New York, passed away on April 16. Well
into his 99th year, Harold was a wonderful
husband, father, grandfather, brother, and
uncle to those fortunate enough to share his
life. His love for family was unlimited. Har-
old graduated from City College of New York
in 1938 and earned a master’s degree in
chemistry from New York University before
serving honorably as a staff sergeant in the
Army Air Force and surviving as a prisoner of
war in Nazi Germany. On his 26th mission in
February 1945, after dropping four 500-
pound bombs from a B-25 in northern Italy to
prevent the Nazis from transporting arma-
ments back into Germany, his crew was shot
down and had to crash land in Austria, close
to neutral Switzerland. All six crew mem-
bers survived the crash as well as the war.

Harold was proud to have served his country
in fighting fascism. Soon after he returned
stateside, his sisters (Eve and Stellie) intro-
duced him to Evelyn Schneyer, kicking off a
70-year match made in heaven. With Evelyn,
he raised three children, Sharon, Andy and
Kim, devoting himself to their education and
welfare, just as his parents had done for him
and his two sisters. Harold’s love for family
transferred to his children, and he experi-
enced great joy through his four grandsons,
Ari, David, Noah, and Matthew, as well as
through his children's spouses, Elvira, Janice
and Larry. A loyal Yankee fan, he took his
sons to see Mickey Mantle hit three home
runs in a 1962 doubleheader. He also en-
joyed the back and forth with his grandsons
who rooted against the Yankees. His Juda-
ism ran deep—he was a man of faith and a
strong believer in the State of Israel. He
helped create the Hebrew High School of the
Five Towns on Long Island and served as
President of its Board of Directors. His fam-
ily is incredibly grateful that Harold enjoyed
such a good and long life. He loved to talk,
laugh and sing. He has been a great bless-
ing to his entire family and will be missed.

Donations in his honor may be made to the
Stein Assisted Living Residence, c/o Anna
Simmons, Executive Director, 350 DeMott
