RAPHAEL-SACKS FRYMAN
COHEN Sandra Joy (Sandy) Fryman, beloved wife,
mother, and grandmother, died Thursday,
April 27, 2017, at Stony Brook University
Hospital in New York, after an extended ill-
ness. She was 85 years old. A resident of
East Hampton, New York, she was born in
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to Ben and Pau-
line Lustig (nee Cohen), on April 6, 1932.

She graduated from Myers High School in
Wilkes-Barre, and attended Pennsylvania
State University, where she met her future
husband Norman M. Fryman, whom she mar-
ried on December 2, 1951, in her home town.

To all who knew her, she lived a life of signi-
ficance and consequence. Blessed with a
sharp, self-deprecating sense of humor, an
infectious laugh, and an innate compassion
and generosity, she influenced everyone she
touched. Though her comfort zone was
backstage, out of the limelight, her spirit, her
curiosity, her meticulous attention to detail,
her unerring judgment, and her boundless
optimism and hopefulness affected and
changed the world around her, a gift and a
responsibility she left to her children, her
grandchildren, and generations yet to come.

She was an avid reader, movie goer, and tele-
vision watcher, constantly informed, good
with number and word games, from cross-
words to Scrabble to backgammon, and clev-
er and inspiring in her own writing to family
and friends. Her life was courageous and en-
gaged, an inspiration to all who knew her,
and a clarion call to keep hope alive. She
was dauntless and brave. Through hospital-
izations and relentless pain, she never gave
up, never gave an inch, and made her family
and the community in which she lived the
better for it. Sandy is survived by her hus-
band, Norman; her children, Jim Fryman,
Shelley Leiweke and her husband Terry,
Pamela Grossbard and her husband Alan;
and by her grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer,
Andrew, Grace, Katie, and Megan; by her be-
loved sister, Sue Goldstone, and her children
and grandchildren; and by her brother- and
sister-in-law, Louis and Rhoda Fryman, and
their children and grandchildren. She would
want to convey special thanks to her care-
givers, Nichelle Roachford and Sherry Allen,
who became a treasured part of her family.

“For her sake, and in her name, we start out
bravely, live on, and fill each waking hour in
useful ways”. Sandra Joy Fryman’s life was
celebrated at services at The Jewish Center of
the Hamptons on May 2, 2017, at 11:00 AM,
