BLUMENFELD BRENNER
Louis I. Abramson, April 19, 2021. Beloved
husband for 70 years of Gloria (nee Sitnick),
died peacefully surrounded by love. Loving
father of the late Brenda Fineberg (Louis),
Debra Ryan (the late Rick) and Sandi Foster
(Joseph). Beloved and proud grandfather of
Rachael, Matthew (Lauren), Brooke (Tim),
Faith (Adam), Eric, Carly (Ray), Alisa (Chris),
Paul (Giannis) and David. Cherished brother
of Allan (Sheila) and beloved by nieces, neph-
ews, relatives and friends. Lou grew up in
South Phila. and joined the Pennsylvania Na-
tional Guard after graduating from high
school. He served during the Korean War and
was honorably discharged after 13 years and
joined the Jewish War Veterans. He was a
National Commander of the J.W.V., serving
all veterans with devotion and support. He
was Commander of Post #697 and an active
member of the Holocaust program. He was
Commander of Post #98, Commander of
Phila. County Council, Dept. of PA, President
of Delaware Valley Veterans Home Advisory
Board, Finance Office for Veteran Guard 3rd
Regiment Infantry National Guard, PA., and
United Veteran Council Phila. He was Presid-
ent of Tiferes B’nai Israel Synagogue and re-
ceived the Man of the Year Award. He will be
sadly missed by his family and all who knew

ALTEN Harvey Alten, age 77, passed away peace-
fully on Friday April 23, 2021 after a valiant
four-year battle with cancer. Loving husband
of Linda (Dorfman), father of Penny Hunn
(Eric) and Iris Braydon. Beloved grandfather
of his wonderful grandchildren, Ethan and
Lexi. Brother of Jerry Alten (Roberta) and the
late Larry Alten (Barbara) and many nieces,
nephews and cousins. Harvey attended Penn
State and graduated from Temple University.

He was a software engineer at RCA for more
than thirty years. He loved spending time
with his family and friends. Harvey had many
passions. He performed in several local
shows and loved watching and showing
movies, the Phillies and Sixers, and travel.

BALABAN Larry Joseph Balaban, 78, of Philadelphia and
Warminster, PA, Margate, NJ, and Rancho
Mirage, CA passed away on April 4th, 2021.

Larry is survived by his beloved wife, Sandy,
and loving children, Michael Balaban, Daniel
Balaban, Drue [Morris] Naish, and Jessica
[Glenn] Sapadin. He is the proud Saba of
Luria, Lee Ty, Aryeh, Elias, Sela, Noah, and

Stephen D. Blumenfeld, beloved husband of
Irene (nee Frankel), loving father of Jason
(Jill) Blumenfeld and Candace (Josh)
Kanaplue and adored grandfather of Ella,
Jack and Gabriel, Uncle of Cynthia and Henri,
brother in-law of Judy and Yossi, passed
away peacefully and surrounded by family at
home on April 27th, 2021. Stephen was born
in Philadelphia in 1947 and grew up in West
Oak Lane where he lived with his grandpar-
ents, father and aunt. He graduated from Ol-
ney High, Millersville and Temple University
where he studied architecture and business.

Stephen was with Irwin Seating as a sales-
man and installer, with his partner, Jonathon
for over 50 years. Stephen met his bride-to-
be, Irene, in 1968, just as she was graduat-
ing high school. They dated for four years
and were married for 49 happy years. Steph-
en was an avid golfer, mountain biking enthu-
siast and enjoyed traveling with his family
and friends. He had many hobbies and spent
a lot of time with loved ones discussing
everything from current events to football. He
was never at a loss for conversation and al-
ways had a funny story to share. He always
had time and enjoyed researching the best of
whatever item a friend or family member was
looking for. He was a stickler for quality and
detail. Steve was very involved in his grand-
children’s lives, picking them up from school
and attending their special events. The kids
loved sleepovers at mom mom and pop
pop’s. They watched movies, rode bikes and
went on hikes. Steve maintained his lifestyle
while going through weekly cancer treat-
ments and the pandemic. He happily atten-
ded his granddaughter’s Bat Mitzvah and was
able to celebrate the High Holidays in 2020.

Steve was his wife’s steady confidant and al-
ways offered good advice. He loved to eat
and Irene loved to cook for him. Their home
was always the center for entertaining friends
and celebrating holidays. He was a strong
and amazing man who left who left so much
behind with all of us. Steve will be inside our
hearts forever.

Roslyn Faye Rickles Brenner, devoted wife,
mother, sister, grandmother, and talented
artist and author passed away April 15, 2021
of natural causes. She was 90. Born Jan. 22,
1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Roslyn
was the daughter of Pauline Brown Rickles
and Charles Rickles. Her brother, Irwin
Rickles, passed away in 1984. A lifelong Phil-
adelphia resident, Roslyn married Clifford
Brenner, who built a career as a public rela-
tions executive in Philadelphia, in 1950. The
couple were married for 56 years, until his
death in 2006. Roslyn held a BFA and MFA
from Temple University, Tyler School of Art,
and taught art in the Philadelphia public
school system. An accomplished painter and
photographer, Roslyn created, wrote and
photographed the book, Philadelphia’s Out-
door Art: A Walking Tour, in 2002 that is still
in active distribution. A number of her paint-
ings are in private collections. She and her
husband traveled extensively around the
world and were members of a longstanding
book and discussion group in the Phil-
adelphia area. Roslyn was observant of the
Jewish faith and she and her family particip-
ated in numerous holidays, services, celebra-
tions and events. Roslyn is survived by her
daughters, Keri Louise Brenner and Meryl
Brenner, and sons, Roy David Brenner and
Michael Evan Brenner, daughters-in-law
Megan Murphy and Chie Utsumi, sister-in-
law Betty Rickles and grandchildren: Rafaella
Pontes, Remington Pontes and Ruby Bren-
ner, Alisa Connolly and Julian Connolly. She
is also survived by her beloved nieces and
nephews and their partners Stephanie and
Barry Gang, Richard Rickles, Robert and El-
len Rickles, Laura and Michael Lehman, Freya
Kamel and Michael Lamvik, and Rachael
Kamel and Susan Rouda. Roslyn will be
missed also by her many wonderful cousins
and lifelong friends with whom she kept in
regular touch. A memorial gathering is
planned for a later date due to current COV-
ID-19 restrictions. In lieu of flowers, please

BROOKS Stanley Brooks 1929-2021, resident of Rydal
Park, passed away on April 4, 2021. He was
92 years young. Stan was the baby to three
older siblings in a working class family in
New York City. Stan was an intellectually
curious person who loved sharing his know-
ledge and insights with others. He built
friendships across the globe and is much be-
loved by many. Stan was a 1951 graduate of
the National Agricultural College (now
Delaware Valley University). In 1952 he was
drafted into the Marine Corp to fight in Korea
but before his ship arrived, the war ended
and his unit set out to rebuild Japan . He and
a Japanese student of English developed a
strong friendship which endured for decades.

When Stan’s mother suffered a stroke in
1953, his older brothers worked through the
Red Cross to return him home, to New York.

For the duration of his services, he was sta-
tioned in a Watch Tower in the Brooklyn Navy
Yard, guarding the East River from potential
enemies. In late 1954, Stan married Millie
Mosko, whom he met in 1950, when both
were college students. Given the choice, he
picked his urban bride over a career in farm-
ing. He never looked back. While Stan’s ori-
ginal career goals involved work in farm
product processing, he soon joined a family-
run company that bought, sold and refur-
bished used industrial equipment. Stan hap-
pily continued at Perry Equipment for 38
years. Among his specialties were repurpos-
ing sugar refineries, old-style large American
breweries and pharmaceutical tanks. His
work gave Stan insight and knowledge into
global manufacturing practices. His bound-
less creativity and entrepreneurship led him
to pursue business in the Soviet Union and
India long before it became commonplace.

He and Millie lived near London for over a
year, while Stan opened the first internation-
al office of his company in 1990. Stan was
active in his retirement years. He took great
pleasure as a docent at the Franklin Institute
science and technology museum in Phil-
adelphia, taking special interest in the manu-
facture of paper. In his 70’s, Stan studied
clowning and became a hospital clown
known as “Dr. Dandee” visiting patients (kids
and adults) in hospitals and providing strong
medicine called ‘laughter.’ Kibitzing aside,
his warmth and compassion were most ap-
preciated. He was a leader at Melrose B’nai
Israel Emanu-el and could be counted on to
make a minyan. Stan and Millie raised their
family in Philadelphia and Cheltenham, and
later moved to Elkins Park. Their final move
landed them in a retirement community two
weeks before the world shut down in March
2020. Stan is survived by his wife Mildred
Brooks, daughter Fran Brooks (Michael Elen-
ko), son Maury Brooks, daughter Sharon
Brooks (Yisroel Schwartz), grandchildren
Kaija, Sasha, Aesop, Yehoshua, Leah, and
Shalom, as well as many other loving relat-
ives. Stan lives on in the people he touched
with his warmth, and joy in connecting with
every person near or far. He brought laughter
to hearts and nudged us to see light in dark-
ness. He showed us that there is no end to
curiosity and a certain satisfaction on the
journey initiated this way. Just give it a try.
