Dr. Bernard Loev, May 12, 2020 of Haver-
ford, PA, age 92; beloved husband of Pearl
(nee Winter), married 66 years; loving father
of Dr. Glen (Youval) Loev, Larry (Juliette) Lo-
ev, and the late Bruce (Ruth) Loev; adoring
grandfather to eleven grandchildren; cher-
ished by fifteen great-grandchildren and
counting; devoted brother of Dr. Marvin (Ad-
rianne) Loev and the late Walter (Irene) Loev.

Dr. Loev was a graduate of the University of
Pennsylvania and received his B.S. and Ph.D
degrees from Columbia University. He was
Senior chemist, Pennwalt; Director of Explor-
atory Research, Smith Kline Beckman; Vice
President of Chemical Research and Develop-
ment and Vice President for Science Affairs
and Licensing, Revlon Health Care; Executive
Vice President, Creative Licensing Interna-
tional; Consultant for Chemex Pharmaceutic-
als, Weizmann Institute, Biofor, Access Phar-
maceuticals, Hybridon, Shaman Pharmaceut-
icals. Dr. Loev held more than 70 patents and
authored more than 100 published articles in
the journals of medicinal chemistry. He was
elected Man of the Year by the American
Chemical Society, 1974. Services and inter-
ment were held privately. Contributions in his

MACHLES Our family is saddened to relate the passing
of Anna May Machles on January 30, 2020.

Beloved wife of Martin Machles, whom with
she shared a beloved marriage for 63 years.

Devoted mother to daughters Michele
Machles and Stacey (Michael) Gaughan. Ad-
oring grandmother to her 4 grandchildren,
Sophia Ostroff and Emily, Tripper and Valerie
Gaughan. Anna May was born to Bertha (Lat-
insky) and Harry Glazer on August 31, 1935.

She had one younger brother, Edward, who
died in his childhood. Anna had attended the
Abramson Center Day Care for several years
before residing at Abramson Center for Jew-
ish Life where she received excellent care.

Anna enjoyed playing piano and mahjong
with her friends. While her children were
growing up she assisted at Greenberg Ele-
mentary School. Many still remember her
from her days watching over them in the
school yard. Anna was also a Girl Scout
Troop Leader. She was a Special Education
Teacher's Assistant at the Baldi Middle
School. She was proprietor of the retail es-
tablishment Invitations Plus, where she treas-
ured her involvement in everyone’s simchas.

Anna very much enjoyed caring for her fam-
ily who were the heart of her world. Anna had
a good heart and a generous spirit. She will
be very missed. A graveside service was held
at King David Memorial Cemetery in Bens-
alem on January 31, 2020 at 11am. Dona-

MALISSA Elizabeth Debra “Debby” Malissa (née
Entine), on April 26, 2020 of complications
related to early-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.

High-school sweetheart and beloved wife of
Dean Malissa and loving mother to Amy
Malissa Hersz (Joshua) and Sam Malissa
(Chen Reichert). She is also survived by her
sister, Susan Barazani (Moshe) and grand-
children, Silvie and Nessah Hersz. Debby was
a brilliant and vivacious woman, a lifelong
learner and a committed teacher. One of her
greatest joys was discovering something new
and then sharing it with the people she loved.

She cherished her family (including her dog-
gies) and was the solid foundation in a house
full of eccentrics. She filled her home with
strong Jewish values, filled her kitchen with
inviting smells from her delicious cooking,
and filled her family’s schedules with well-
structured plans. Debby dedicated her life as
a student and an educator to helping others
communicate and connect. In the first part of
her career she was a speech pathologist and
a teacher of English as a second language.

Along the way she learned to speak Hebrew,
French, Spanish, and Portuguese. Later in
her professional life she directed continuing
education courses on Jewish culture and his-
tory and organized Jewish heritage tours
around the world. She read widely, loved to
travel, and had a deep appreciation for fine
art. Her style and fashion reflected her joie de
vivre and attention to detail. She was the one
dancer in a family of singers. The family re-
quests donations to be made in Debby’s
memory to Pennsylvania Society for the Pre-
vention of Cruelty to Animals or to the
Alzheimer’s Association. Due to the pandem-
ic, funeral arrangements are private and there
will be no Shiva visitation. A Memorial Ser-
vice will take place at a later time.

RAPHAEL-SACKS M. Barry Meyer, 1931-2020. It is with great
sadness that we announce the passing of M.

Barry Meyer, husband, brother, father and
grandfather on May 18, 2020, after succumb-
ing to Covid-19 at the age of 89. Born in
Charleston, West Virginia, and raised in Phil-
adelphia, Barry graduated from the Wharton
School of Business and Harvard Law School.

While in Boston attending Harvard, he met
Newton, Mass. native Thelma Lee Berch. Fol-
lowing their marriage, they moved to suburb-
an Washington, D.C., where Barry’s passion
for government led him to work for the Bur-
eau of Public Roads and the American Truck-
ing Association before eventually becoming
Chief Counsel and Chief Clerk for the Senate
Committee on Public Works. There, working
for committee chairman West Virginia Senat-
or Jennings Randolph, he helped to write
landmark clean air and clean water legisla-
tion. After working for ten years on Capitol
Hill, he spent 25 years in government rela-
tions at the Aluminum Association. A lover of
puns, books of rules, sports, theater, sym-
phony and family, a longtime member of
Congregation Har Shalom in Potomac, Md.,
and a lifelong Democrat, Barry is survived by
his wife Temmy, his sister Mary Lou and
brother-in-law and childhood friend Pace
Reich, his children David and wife Gwen, De-
borah and husband Matt, Rebecca and hus-
band Kevin, and Dan and wife Bo and his
grandchildren Ethan, Layla, Carla, Talia,
Sophia, Molly, Eva, Sarah and Katie. In lieu of

JOSEPH LEVIN and SONS
NEWBERGER Mark D. Newberger passed away on May 2,
2020. He was a graduate of Haverford Col-
lege and Cornell Law School. He worked as
an attorney and later as an Administrative
Law Judge at the U.S. Social Security Admin-
istration, following in the footsteps of his
father, who did the same. He also served on
the Lower Merion Township Board of Com-
missioners. An all inter-academic soccer
goalie in college and later a youth soccer
league coach, he was a lifelong sports fan. He
also enjoyed playing the guitar, volunteering
with Habitat for Humanity, and spending time
with his family. Mark is survived by his moth-
er, Gloria Newberger; his brother, Craig New-
berger; his sister, Nancy Ludin; his daughter,
Lauren Falcao Bergquist; his grandson,
Charlie Falcao Bergquist, several nieces and
nephews, and his beloved dog, Ricky. Private
graveside services are being held. Contribu-
