SHANE SCHOENHOLTZ
Evelyn Shirley Schoenholtz, born on July 21,
1925 in Philadelphia to Mary and Saul
Schneyer, passed away on April 28. Well in-
to her 93 rd year, Evelyn was an uncondition-
ally loving wife, mother, grandmother,
daughter, sister and aunt to those fortunate
enough to share her life. A gentle, kind soul,
she possessed an extraordinary equanimity.

Evelyn graduated from West Philadelphia
High School and completed two years at
Westchester State Teacher’s College. Duty
called, and she served the war effort in the
Signal Corps. In 1946, she started dating
Harold Schoenholtz months after his sisters
(Eve and Stelly) introduced them, kicking off
a 70-year match made in heaven. With Har-
old, she raised three children, Sharon, Andy
and Kim, devoting herself to their education
and welfare, just as her parents had done for
her and her brother. She welcomed her
mother Mary into her home during the last
decade of Mary’s life. Evelyn took great joy
in her four grandsons, Ari, David, Noah and
Matthew, and in her children's spouses,
Larry, Janice and Elvira. Evelyn and Harold
possessed a unique love for family, which
they passed down to their children and
grandchildren. Evelyn played the piano and
learned to paint as an adult, pursuing her art
with dedication and a quiet passion. She had
an artist’s eye, appreciating the shape of
clouds, the exact color of the sky, and many
of nature’s wondrous details. She loved the
beach and playing gin rummy, Rummikub
and Scrabble. She returned to college in
mid-life and earned a Bachelor’s degree, be-
coming a social worker and serving as an art
and recreational therapy director at a senior
home. At the age of 70, cheered on by her
family, she became an adult Bat Mitzvah. Her
family is profoundly grateful that Evelyn en-
joyed such a long and happy life. Evelyn has
been a great blessing to her entire family,
who deeply mourn her passing but find com-
fort in knowing that she and Harold are once
again side by side. Donations in her memory
may be made to the Stein Assisted Living
Residence, c/o Anna Simmons, Executive

man, her sisters Margaret Schwartz, Sylvia
Pitts, Louise Weiss, and her “always with a

She graduated from the U of Pittsburgh and
later went back to receive her masters de-
