the Marine Corps during WWII from 1944 to
1945. Graduated from The Penn State Uni-

al career specializing in all aspects of tax law,
with a special emphasis on retirement bene-
fits and, in the latter part of his career, estate
planning. He was one of an increasingly
small number of tax generalists and was
proud of it, believing that knowledge across
the entire field of taxation made him a better
lawyer in each particular area. He was prodi-
giously active as a legal educator, serving for
many years an adjunct Professor at the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania Law School, where
his students dubbed him “Mr. ERISA”. Merv
was also Planning chairman and lecturer for
numerous American Law Institute – Americ-
an Bar Association Continuing Legal Educa-
tion programs, contributing his knowledge
and talent to generations of lawyers. In 1987
he won the Rawle Award for Outstanding
Contributions to Continuing Legal Education.
He was a lifetime member of the American
Law Institute as well as a Fellow of the Amer-
ican College of Trust and Estate Counsel and
of the American College of Tax Counsel. He
was also very active in the ABA tax section
for many years headed very important and
committees in the ERISA area. As best said
by a former long-term client “as an attorney,
he always put his client's interests first, was
totally professional and honest in addition to
being a brilliant attorney”. Merv loved the law
and practiced for 58 years from 1955 to
2013. First President of the National Mu-
seum of American Jewish History in Phil-
adelphia from 1974 to 1978. Lover of tennis,

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.
The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.
Samuel Wurtzel, on March 8, 2017. Sam
lived a purposeful and accomplished life right
up to the moment he died peacefully in his
adopted Kentucky home. Sam, as he was
known to his family, clients and countless
friends from Philadelphia to Madisonville, KY
to Captiva, FL was engaging, generous and
boundlessly curious. He was an entrepren-
eur and innovator in investing, insurance and
private wealth management. Sam was born in
Rosenhayn, NJ and grew up in Philadelphia.
He was a proud graduate of Central High
School, and a 1958 business graduate of THE
Penn State. An accomplished trumpetist and
aspiring jazz musician, life circumstances de-
manded he pursue a more practical career
path. Same began working at Provident Mu-
tual as a recruiting and training supervisor;
he led the number one agency by 1963 and
was eventually President of the Field Force.
He established Financial Security Analysts
(which served his customers for 50 years)
and made Million Dollar Round table for 40
years, and Top 50 member for 25 years.
Sam holds multiple degrees in advanced fin-
ancial planning, and taught at both the Amer-
ican College of Underwriters and Temple
Dental School. Having lost his father at 17,
Sam went on to become the father, husband
and grandfather others did not have. His
deep passion for his family and the many
ways he could inspire each of them toward
daily self-improvement in mind, body and
spirit were his life’s mission. Sam was an ar-
dent correspondent, and if you met him even
once you were likely to receive a lifetime of
newspaper articles and clippings perfectly
suited to your interest. His mastery of vast
swaths of knowledge was legend – a font of
semi-useless knowledge, as he termed it.
Sam is pre-deceased by his parents, Anna
and William Wurtzel and his daughter Wendy,
and by his beautiful wife of 45 years, Phyllis.
He is survived by his sister Alma, his be-
loved wife Shirley Spence PhD, and her chil-
dren Bob Harvey, Sean Spence, Marisa
Sample and her daughters Chloe and Peyton.
He is the devoted father of David Wurtzel
(Muna El-Shaks), Lisa Raiola (Waterman
Brown), and Michele Bokun (Scott), and lov-
ing grandfather of Austin and Stefanie Raiola,
Abby and Lilly Bokun, Billy and Galena
Wurtzel, Rachel Kachnycz, and Ardy Wurtzel.
