COPPERMAN
DEATH NOTICES
COPPERMAN Dr. Gertrude Freeman Copperman died on
March 1 at the age of 94. She was born in the
Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of Phil-
adelphia, attended Girls High School, Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania and Women’s Medic-
al College. She opened her offices for the
practice of family medicine in the Wynnefield
neighborhood of Philadelphia in 1951 and
was joined by her husband, Dr. Reuben Cop-
perman. After twenty five years of practicing
together, they divorced. Gertrude continued
working at her offices which were then in
Bala Cynwyd. When she retired at the age of
75, she attended writing classes and pub-
lished a book titled “I Was A Felon” about her
experiences as a doctor and as a politically
committed person. The title of the book
refers to her methods of obtaining abortions
for her patients before Roe versus Wade. It
also includes her multi-national search of an
herbally derived drug for A.L.S. (amyotroph-
ic lateral sclerosis) and its use on a patient
and friend. And she writes about her activity
to get women more engaged in physical
activity. After her divorce Gertrude also be-
came more involved in athletic and feminist
issues. For about a decade she was involved
in a group of professional female athletes
bringing medical education and athletic in-
formation to countries such as Costa Rica,
Guatemala and El Salvador. She also took up
windsurfing in her sixties, skied into her 80’s,
and was riding a three wheel bicycle and dan-
cing in the last year of her life. As a physi-
cian she had always stressed the importance
of exercise and she lived what she taught.
She is survived by her two daughters, Joan
of Massachusetts and Barbara of California,
and will be remembered and missed by many
with a smile in their hearts. Donations in her
honor can be made to Planned Parenthood or
the Women’s Sports Foundation.

Herbert S Cutler died peacefully at home on
March 8, 2017. Born in 1920, he grew up in
the Depression and was always highly motiv-
ated to do his best. Becoming a Boy Scout in-
troduced him to his lifelong interests of bird-
ing, photography and a love of Nature. He be-
came an Eagle Scout and a member of the
Delaware Valley Ornithological Club in 1939
where he was a pioneering birder. His high IQ
qualified him for officers training where he
became a 2nd Lieutenant bombardier/navig-
ator in the US Army Air Corps in WWII. In
1946 he worked at Perfect Photo and met
Elizabeth Croll. They married in 1949 and had
a wonderful, inspiring marriage for 67 years
which begat 3 children, 8 grandchildren & 1
great grandson. He was one of the happiest
family men in the world and appreciated his
dear extended family. His life centered on
family, business & travel. After working in the
photographic industry for 18 years, he
opened his own camera store, Cutler Camera,
in 1965. There were 14 stores by the time he
retired in 1997. He wrote a column for Photo
Marketing Association; was on the board of
Photographic Research Organization; atten-
ded & helped organize conventions on a na-
tional level and was honored for his service.
He was proud that his sons continued the
family business and of the many achieve-
ments of his grandchildren. He and Elizabeth
traveled to all 7 continents and about 75
countries. They visited quite remote areas to
study birds and to Japan & China for photo
industry trips that were groundbreaking at
that time. Herbert’s generosity was well
known and his values of honesty, loyalty,
trustworthiness & integrity have been in-
stilled in all of us. At 96 years, he was the
longest-lived in his family and our patriarch.
He was an exceptional provider, a devoted
husband, father & brother and a truly good
man. He will be deeply missed. Herbert is
survived by: his sister, Augusta Gammon &
brother Jerome Cutler; the love of his life:
Elizabeth & their children David (Michele),
Cheryl (Peter) & Richard (Marianna); loyalty,
his grandchildren: Lauren Barnosky, Blake &
Tara Cutler; Colin & Clare Cornberg; Ryan &
Rachel Andes & Max Cutler; and his great
grandson, Jonah Barnosky. Our thanks are
extended to family and friends who have
been so supportive in this time of sorrow. We
are so privileged to have shared so many
wonderful years together. Daddy wished us a
very happy future with all his love.

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.
The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.

Charles Shaw Domsky. Feb. 22, 2017. After
a brave struggle with Parkinson’s disease.
Survived by his wife of 57 years Ellie (nee
Sokolow). Father of Jason (Amy). Survived
by grandson Jordan and granddaughter Al-
exa. Brother of Libby Feldman (Steven). He
was predeceased by his son Adam. He was
the owner and president of Domsky and Si-
mon Advertising Agency until he retired to
paint in 2007. Charles Domsky always knew
that art was the door to the depth of his self-
expression. He won 2 scholarships to the
Philadelphia College of Art, where he gradu-
ated in 1959. The rigors of business preven-
ted him from more actively pursuing his deal
dream…art. That all changed when he was
diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Refus-
ing to picture walls closing in on him, he
painted an escape door and exploded through
it into the next stage of his life; a stage where
he would devote all of his time and energy to
his artwork. Charles submitted works to “All
About Art” at Moss Rehab for several years
and his artwork is in public and corporate
collections. Numerous pieces have been ac-
quired by Deloitte, a major international ac-
counting and consulting firm, Moss Rehab
Hospital and Princeton University Medical
Center. Contributions in his memory may be
made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
