ADINI BELLER
BRENNER Dr. Uziel (Uzi) Adini, age 83, of Philadelphia,
PA, passed away on May 27, 2021 after a
long battle with Leukemia. Uzi was born on
June 23, 1937 to Leah and Yisrael Adini in
pre-state Israel. He was raised in Tel-Aviv. He
served as a sergeant in the Israeli Defense
Forces in the heavy artillery unit. In 1962, he
married Tamar Löw, and together they had
two daughters, Ronit and Tali. Uzi earned a
B.A. and an M.A. degree in the complement-
ary fields of Bible, Hebrew Literature and
Education, at the Hebrew University of Jerus-
alem. He earned his Ed.D degree at Dropsie
College in Philadelphia, PA. Uzi was one of
the most renowned authorities on Jewish
Education in the United States. Following 23
years as the Director of the Jewish Com-
munity High School of Gratz College, he
served as Vice President and then as a Pro-
fessor of Education and Literature at Gratz
College. An inspirational teacher, Dr. Adini
had a profound impact on generations of stu-
dents who remember him with affection and
respect. Beyond his professional achieve-
ments, Uzi earned a well-justified reputation
as a person of empathy, humor, warmth, and
stirring intellect. He was beloved as a col-
league, mentor, teacher, friend, spouse, fath-
er and grandfather. We will all miss his viva-
cious personality, amazing story telling and
generous smile. Uzi is survived by his wife
Tamar, daughters Ronit (Jeff) and Tali (Yoni),
and granddaughters Shira, Arielle, Ilana and
Amalia; and his brother Ami Adini. Donations

BANGIS Priscilla (nee Tripler) Bangis died on May

Estelle Braufman (nee Shertz), age 86,
passed away on June 10, 2021 after a long
battle with COPD. Estelle was raised in
Wilkes-Barre, PA and graduated from Penn
State Univ. In 1958 she married her life long
partner Mervin. While raising 3 sons she re-
turned to school in 1974 for her Masters De-
gree in social work. She then began a 30
year career in the field, working first for Jew-
ish Community Centers and then for Federa-
tion Senior Housing. Estelle enjoyed travel-
ing, collecting artwork, and family gatherings.

She had a lifetime commitment to the value
of reading and education, and to helping oth-
ers. She will be greatly missed. Estelle was
preceded in death by her loving husband of
62 years, Mervin. She is survived by sons
Gary, Adam (Sue), and Kirk (Lisa) Braufman,
and adoring grandchildren Dustin, Mia, and

Bari Andrea Edwards (nee Wiess), age 75,
passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2021 at
home after a long battle with cancer. Born
February 20, 1946 in Philadelphia, PA, Bari
graduated from Northeast High School where
she was affectionately known as Andi. She
was an artist, book illustrator, philanthropist,
automobile sales consultant, and a friend to
everyone she met. Bari was well known to
most employees and some patrons at every
store, medical office, or business she visited.

Preceded in death by her parents, Leonard
and Betty (nee Pinsker) Weiss; brothers,
Drew and Jeff; she is survived by her boy-
friend, Dana Herbein; three sons; and eight
grandchildren. Services were private. In lieu

FRIEDMAN Florence “Flossie” “Faye” Friedman, 96, of
Lancaster, passed away at the Mennonite
Home on June 8, 2021 (her daughter Andi's
birthday) with her son Rich at her side after a
21-year struggle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Faye was born in Philadelphia in 1924 to the
late Samuel and Amelia (Koff) Wachtel. A
natural athlete, she played basketball and was
a cheerleader in high school. Her family
moved to Harrisburg her senior year; and
after graduating, she worked as a bookkeep-
er in an apparel shop where she spent most
of her earnings. She was involved in plan-
ning USO activities during WWII, and after
the war, her uncle introduced her to his
friend Stanley Friedman, a returning Veteran
from Lancaster. They married in 1946 and
celebrated 58 years of glorious marriage ma-
gic until his death in 2004. Faye was an
amazing homemaker, volunteer and athlete.

She golfed, played tennis, and loved canasta
and mahjong as well. She was an active
member of the JCC and the Temple Beth El
Sisterhood. She cooked for Town Fair,
modeled in fashion shows, acted in plays,
and answered the call wherever she was
needed. She attended every event in which
her children participated. In later years, she
and Stan spent their winters in Florida, but
continued to travel “north” if their grandchil-
dren were in an activity or special event. In
the summer, she loved visiting the Jersey
Shore and going to the beach. Devoting her
entire life to her family, Faye is survived by
her daughter Andrea Shiroff, wife of Herb, of
Pompano Beach, FL, son Richard Friedman,
husband of Susan, of Lancaster, grandchil-
dren Seth Wolkov, husband of Tia, Joe Fried-
man, Lauren Fogel, wife of Raphael, Glenn
Shiroff, husband of Lisa, Andrew Shiroff,
Mandy Meyer, wife of Matthew; and her 6
great grandchildren Weston and Remy
Wolkov, Sayde Shiroff, Pisay and Addie Mey-
er, Liam and Amalia Fogel. She was pre-
ceded in death by a brother Gerald Wachtel.

She is also loved by many friends, extended
family, and those who cared for her at the
Mennonite Home in Lancaster. Faye spread
her love and generosity to all who came her
way, and will always be remembered for her
smile, her warmth, her generosity and uncon-
ditional love and hugs. May her memory al-
ways be a blessing. Graveside Services were
held at Temple Beth El Cemetery, 295 E.

June 10, 2021 with Rabbi Jack Paskoff. Me-

GRAY Donald Gray, the most remarkable Zayda, de-
voted father and adoring husband, died on
Tuesday at his home in East Norriton, sur-
rounded by the love of his family after a long
and fulfilled life. He was 92. Born on Jan. 6,
1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the
late Jack and Anna Gray, Don was one of four
siblings. He was predeceased by his brother,
Seymour, and is survived by his younger sis-
ters, Lillian Garbus of Philadelphia, and Be-
atrice Steponate of Chicago, and by many
cousins, nieces and nephews. Don was pre-
deceased by his wife of 59 years, Bettyanne
Gray (Abramson), with whom he enjoyed a
storybook romance throughout their mar-
riage. He is survived by his children: son, El-
lis Gray (Donna) of Holland, Pa.; daughter,
Heidi Gray-Devita (Angelo) of Lower
Gwynedd, Pa.; and daughter, Debi Gray of
Plymouth Meeting, Pa.; and his seven grand-
children: Charles Devita (Heather), Aaron
Gray, Jacob Gray, Elizabeth Phillips (Evan),
and Mason Gray. Don lived simply and fully,
always content with his lot in life. He needed
little for himself, yet gave so much to his
wife, his children, and his community. His life
was defined by love of family, tireless hard
work and service to others. A proud Marine,
who also served as a cook in the U.S. Army,
Don was a familiar sight sporting his red
“Once a Marine” baseball cap. For Don, work
wasn’t just his livelihood, it was his vocation.

He owned Northeast Sales and Service, a
heating and air-conditioning company
serving the Philadelphia area for over 50
years. He was the first contractor to bring air-
conditioning to the residential market in Phil-
adelphia. He earned the loyalty and affection
of all of his customers, who would tell stor-
ies of his character and commitment: the
time he ducked out of High Holiday services
to repair the synagogue’s AC system; the
Sunday morning when he fixed the
neighbor’s AC unit to keep the shiva house
cool; how he provided services to dozens of
Russian Jewish immigrants without ever
sending a bill. He served as a Vice President
of Adath Tikvah Synagogue, formerly Rhawn-
hurst Jewish Community Center. He volun-
teered with his wife to help recent Russian
immigrants learn English and adapt to life in
the US for over a decade. Don continued
serving others later in life, as he delivered
food to the homebound for the JRA. A mem-
ber of the SAR Fraternity, he cherished his
lifelong friendships with “the guys.” For more
than 70 years, the SAR brothers met regu-
larly to play cards, grab lunch at a deli, and
celebrate happy occasions. “Zayda” Don was
also affectionately known as “The Latka
Man,” as he loved to make his famous latkes
for family, friends and scores of students
over the years. He enjoyed music and singing
through his final days. He was a man of few
words who modeled the values by which he
lived: self-sufficiency, industriousness, hon-
esty and generosity. Contributions in his

Marilyn Sue (née Shapiro) Green of
Parkland,Fl (formally of Philadelphia), passed
away on April 22, 2021. She is survived by
her beloved husband Leonard, loving mother
of Sherri Green and Melissa Luboff (Alan).

Extremely proud and loving Mom-mom of
Austin, Amber, Alexa and Hunter Luboff. Be-
loved aunt of Linda Fox (Scott) and Mitchell
Shapiro (Christine). Marilyn was the daugh-
ter of the late Anna and Abraham Shapiro.

Loving sister of the late Edwin Shapiro (Rita),
the late Harold Shapiro and the late Marvin
Shapiro (Elaine). Marilyn was born in Phil-
adelphia where she had her own party plan-
ning business which she continued when she
relocated to Florida. Contributions in her

HECKLIN Shirley Ruth Hecklin (nee Goldberg) passed
away on May 27, 2021 after a courageous
three-month battle with COVID-19 that
showed all of us her tremendous inner
strength and determination. Shirley was born
December 31, 1936 to Abraham Jacob Gold-
berg and Alice Goldberg (nee Whiser) in New
Orleans. She grew up and attended Fortier
High School and Louisiana State University,
graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in
music. She met her future husband, Oscar
Bernard (O.B) Hecklin, on a blind date; he
was doing his orthopaedic residency in New
Orleans. They were married in 1962 and
moved to Wyncote, outside of Philadelphia,
where O. B. joined a thriving orthopaedic
practice as a surgeon. Shirley was prede-
ceased by her husband O.B. in 1991, and by
her son Lawrence (Larry) Evan (Mindi) earli-
er this year. She is survived by her daughter
Brenda Suzanne and her brother Myron Saul
Goldberg (Marcie). She treasured her two
grandsons, Jacob Andrew Hecklin and
Joshua David Hecklin. Shirley had an enga-
ging, warm smile and always a kind word.

She was proud of her Southern Jewish roots.

She loved when her drawl was recognized
and acknowledged and enjoyed her grits as a
girl raised in the South. Shirley's musical tal-
ent brought joy to her family, friends and
community. She performed piano for many
years and was a beloved teacher. She was
known to accompany her daughter Brenda, a
classically trained singer, at home and at out-
side events. She is now an angel in heaven
watching over us, in the arms of her beloved
husband, O.B., and reunited with her son,
Larry. She will be missed forever-and always

HERSKOVITZ Michael Herskovitz on May 30, 2021. Mi-
chael was born in a small village in Botfalva,
Czechoslovakia in 1929. As a teenager he
survived two years in the worst Nazi concen-
tration camps, Auschwitz, Mauthausen, and
Gunskirchen. Prior to immigrating to the
United States in 1959 he lived for ten years in
Israel. Michael fought in the 1948 war of In-
dependence and the 1956 Sinai War. Over the
past 30+ years Michael has been an educator
on the Holocaust to students throughout the
US and internationally. Beloved husband of
Tonya (nee Nowlin) and the late Frida (nee
Weig); Loving father of Pearl (Jacky) Kouzi,
Edward (Jean) Herskovitz and Mercedes
Griffin; Devoted grandfather of Jennifer, Avi,
Michelle and Steven; Adoring great-grand-
father of Noah, Talia, Evan, Ariela, Gabrielle

ISENBERG Carl A. Isenberg passed peacefully at home in
Philadelphia, May 16, 2021, age 82. Roxbor-
ough High School graduate & army veteran,
Carl was a successful electrical draftsman.

His generous and caring character was ap-
preciated by all. Interests were sports, play-
ing softball, travel and mystery novels. Pre-
deceased by his wife, Pearl Chuse (2009), to-
gether 43 years, for whom he was deeply de-
voted. Survived by siblings Lynn, Joyce,
Ruthann and Glen; (8 nieces/nephews);
nephews & niece (Barry, Jeffrey, Brian and
Michelle Rowe); and Devon Downs, who he
loved like a grandson. Service was held on
May 19.
