Herbert Ellis Allen PhD, of Bala Cynwyd, June
29, 2021. Husband of Ronnie Allen (nee Ma-
gil). Father of Francine (James Church) and
Julie, brother of Sandra. Step father of
Wendy Miller (Hal) and Teri Galter. Grand-
father of Paula and Jennifer Miller. Prede-
ceased by parents, Florence and Jacob and
also by first wife Deena (nee Wilner). He re-
ceived both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from
the University of Michigan. Was Professor
emeritus of Civil & Environmental Engineer-
ing at University of Delaware. Previously was
Director of Drexel University’s Environmental
Studies Institute. Published over 150 papers
and was editor of 6 books concerned with the
chemistry and contamination of natural wa-
ters and soil. Mentored 16 doctoral students
and 47 Master’s students. Served as a con-
sultant to many industries, to U.S. and for-
eign governments and to the World Health
Organization. He was a Fellow of the Americ-
an Chemical Society. He enjoyed travel and
visited 112 countries for both business and
pleasure. Travel photography was a passion
and he edited and cataloged over 120,000
photos from his travels. In retirement he re-
sumed stamp collecting and had an extens-
ive collection of German stamps. Contribu-

Marlene Sylvia Auerbach, 84, of Brigantine
formerly of Cherry Hill passed away on Wed-
nesday June 23, 2021. Marlene was born in
Philadelphia to the late Solomon and Netta
(Rubin) Myers. She was a graduate of Dob-
bins Career and Technical High School in
Philadelphia. Marlene was formerly em-
ployed as a secretary at Lockheed Martin
Corporation in Moorestown. After her retire-
ment she moved to Brigantine 20 years ago.

She is survived by her children Alison Ray
(Paul), Mitchell Auerbach (Cindy) and Bruce
Auerbach (Tracy). Marlene is also survived
by her grandchildren, Jason, Jordan, Lind-
say and Zachary and her beloved dogs Brad-
ley Cooper and Sugar. In addition to her par-

Jeffrey B. Berlin PhD, passed away peace-
fully at home on Thursday, June 24, 2021
surrounded by his family. He will always be
known as a beloved husband, father, and
Opa, as well as an internationally-acclaimed
scholar and educator, whose courage and
persistence in the face of an ongoing debilit-
ating disease made him an inspiration to all
who knew him. The writer and editor of hun-
dreds of journal articles and 10 scholarly
books translated into multiple languages, Dr.

Berlin was a sought-after authority on Exile
literature whose access and insight into the
correspondence of German-Jewish authors
of the time portrayed, among other import-
ant themes, the struggles and determination
of those living under, escaping from, and
daring to speak out against the Nazi regime.

His piercing intellectual curiosity, combined
with a delightful, if somewhat off-beat sense
of humor, made him engaging company to
family, friends, and colleagues from many
nations. He was greatly loved and will be
dearly missed by Anne, his wife of 48 years,
his children Sam (Tara) Berlin and Rachel
(Michael) Moir, grandchildren Fiona and Re-
illy Berlin, brother Michael, granddog Luna,
and a host of loving family members and

DANZINGER CHAVENSON
After a valiant 15-month battle with ALS,
Gary Allen Chavenson is at peace. His jour-
ney through this life ended on June 17, 2021.

Gary is preceded in death by his mother,
Elsie, and father, Abraham Chavenson. He is
survived by his wife, Delma Chavenson; his
two brothers, Myles and wife Mary and Mark
and wife Fran; his children, Kimberly and
husband Keith Myers, Heather and husband
John Mimm, Justina and husband Anthony
Hevener, Denise and husband Brad Adcock,
and Joel Morales; eight grandchildren,
Baylor, Kennedy, Cheyann, Blake, James,
Jonathan, Jessica, and Connor; and two
great-grandchildren, Caden and Carter. Gary
grew up in Philadelphia with his mother, fath-
er, and two brothers in a traditional family.

He celebrated his bar mitzvah at 13 steeped
in the Jewish faith and tradition. They made
many trips to the family beach house in At-
lantic City. Gary had an appetite for reading
and learning. After graduating in the first
class from George Washington High School,
Gary attended Saint Joseph’s University and
received a Bachelor’s of Science in 1974.

Gary then left the east coast and ventured
South to San Antonio where he continued his
education and earned many more degrees
and certifications. He obtained an Associate
of Applied Science in Computer Program-
ming from San Antonio College in 1977, a
Master’s of Computer and Information Sci-
ences from Trinity University in 1983, be-
came a Certified Public Accountant in 1989,
earned a second Master’s from St. Mary’s
University in Business Administration in
1992, and completed his designations as a
Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered
Life Underwriter from the American College
in 1997 and 1998 respectively. In San Anto-
nio, he began working with USAA and there
he found his life’s work. At USAA, Gary flour-
ished and found a second family. Gary
worked tirelessly to uphold the USAA Mis-
sion and contribute to the many projects and
strategies he supported over his 41-year ca-
reer. During his tenure at USAA, he became a
revered colleague to many, a mentor to all
and an inspiration for anyone who had the
pleasure to work with him. For many years,
he even volunteered as the Chairperson of
‘Christmas Cheer’, which was USAA’s annual
project to bring Christmas parties and gifts to
the elderly and underprivileged children. Gary
and Delma created a life together that was
filled with activities, adventures, achieve-
ments… and PURPLE. To Gary, there was
only one color on the spectrum and that was
PURPLE. Purple is appropriate to signify a
life well lived; it is the color of royalty, nobil-
ity, strength, and determination. During that
well-lived life together, Delma and Gary were
the first to visit loved ones in the hospital,
help anyone who needed a hand, and spend
hours volunteering and travel the country
through Europe and to Singapore. In short, a
Jewish, East Coast boy etched out a noble life
for himself in San Antonio steeped in Family,

DANZIGER CODELL
June Bernice Codell was born July 1, 1935, in
Philadelphia and died May 31, 2021 in Berke-
ley CA, just short of her 86th birthday. She
was the loving daughter of Maurice and
Manya (Marian) Codell who last resided in
Lake Worth FL. She was predeceased by her
parents and sister Helen Miller of Boynton
Beach FL, and survived by her brother
Richard Codell of Sandy, UT. June was an as-
piring actress on local Philadelphia TV while
also working as a magazine editor in New
York. She moved to San Francisco in the
early 60’s and led an active and interesting
life on the coast. She was loved by her fam-
ily and friends, and in later years taken care
of by her dear caregiver and friend Rosie
Galindo (who is by the way, an angel). At her
request, Rosie and her family scattered
June’s ashes in San Francisco Bay.

COHEN Rabbi Henry Cohen, Rabbi Emeritus at Beth
David Reform Congregation, passed away on
June 18, 2021. Beloved husband of the late
Edna (nee Goldzweig). Loving father of Shel-
ley and Lisa Cohen. Adoring grandfather of
Tali Phillips. Rabbi Cohen served Beth David
from 1964, where he remained until becom-
ing Rabbi Emeritus in 1993. Rabbi Cohen
was born in Houston, Texas, into a family of
Reform rabbis. He was ordained at the
Hebrew Union College in 1953 and later
served as an army chaplain. He was chair-
man of the Jewish Coalition for Peace, cam-
paigned for the release of Soviet Jewry and
helped form the Interfaith Hospitality of the
Main Line. He authored several books, in-
cluding Why Judaism?, What's Special About
Judaism? and a biography of his grandfather,
Kindler of Souls: Rabbi Henry Cohen of
Texas. Rabbi Cohen was a leader whose ded-
ication to social justice and progressive val-
ues, commitment to community engagement
and passion for learning inspired many. Con-

Michael S. Danziger of Bryn Mawr died on
April 11, 2021. He died of pneumonia, and
was in treatment for CLL at the time of his
death. Michael grew up in Woodmere, NY. He
held degrees from Northwestern University,
and Brooklyn Law School. He was an Attor-
ney, and served as an Administrative Law
Judge in New York City. He is survived by his
wife Rebecca Klauder Danziger, his mother
Eleanor Danziger, his sister Kathleen (Jerome
Fortier), and brother Peter (Joan Nelick) Dan-
ziger. He also leaves behind four nieces and a
nephew, eleven grand nieces and nephews,
his Aunt Daisy Rosner, and seven Rosner
cousins. Michael was 66. His presence in our

Michael S. Danziger of Bryn Mawr died on
April 11, 2021. He died of pneumonia, and
was in treatment for CLL at the time of his
death. Michael was born August 26, 1954.

He grew up in Woodmere, NY. He held de-
grees from Northwestern University, and
Brooklyn Law School. Michael was an Attor-
ney, and served as an Administrative Law
Judge in New York City. He is survived by his
wife Rebecca Klauder Danziger, his mother
Eleanor Danziger, and his sister Kathleen

was buried his beloved brother Peter Danzi-

seven Rosner cousins mourn the loss of the

Pennsylvania, died June 22, just one week
after celebrating his 62nd anniversary with
his beloved wife, Sylvia (nee Levinson). Fam-
ily was everything to Bennett. He raised two
children, Naomi Fishbein Reses (Stephen
Reses) and Joel Fishbein (Rachel Ezekiel-
Fishbein). His six grandchildren were his
greatest pride: Dana, Matt and Andrew
Reses, and Danny, Adam and Emma Fish-
bein. He was the son of David and Dorothy
Fishbein, and the brother of Shifra Davidoff
(Sydney), all of blessed memory. Bennett and
Sylvia traveled extensively around the world,
collecting stories and new friends. He was
well known to all of his grandchildren’s
friends and teammates, as he never missed
one of their sporting events, performances or
honors. He was happiest when the entire
family was together for shabbat dinner or a
meal out. A butcher by trade, Bennett owned
two bars during his life and was known as a
fair and kind employer. Bennett was a long-
time member of Beth Tikvah B’nai Jeshurun,
which honored him with its BTBJ 2016 Life-
time Achievement Award for his life time of
dedication to the synagogue. Bennett was
born in Northern Liberties, raised his chil-
dren in Mt. Airy and Oreland, and resided in
Plymouth Meeting, before moving to Shan-
nondell in Audubon two years ago. Dona-

away on July 6 from complications from
lingering health issues. He was 88. Mr. Gittel-
man was a family man, corporate executive
and business owner, avid golfer and loyal
friend. Born in Philadelphia in 1933 to Major
and Henrietta Gittelman, Bernie graduated
from Drexel University and spent many years
as an advertising executive for United Tech-
nical Publications and then for Chilton Pub-
lishing. He later owned his own advertising
sales company, The Gittelman Company, in
Fort Washington, PA, near where he lived. In
1991, he and his wife retired to Florida.

“Bernie was a natural salesman, with a
charming personality and an infectious
smile,” said Norma Gittelman, his wife of 67
years. First in Brigantine, NJ and then in Boca
Raton, Bernie was an ardent golfer and
bridge enthusiast, loved to fish, and enjoyed
hosting friends at his home. He is survived
by Norma, three children (Mark, Marsha and
Michael) and eight grandchildren, all of

GORDON On March 23, 2021, the world lost an angel.

Erica Jill Gordon, daughter, sister, niece,
friend, and cat mom, passed away at the
Cleveland Clinic in Westin, Florida, with her
devoted family by her side. She was 36. Erica
was tiny in stature, but not in strength. She
was a fighter. Erica battled Crohn’s disease --
and other illnesses stemming from her dia-
gnosis, such as colitis, psoriasis, arthritis,
and gastroparesis -- since the age of 9 --
when it was finally diagnosed. She was vocal
about her diagnoses, labeling herself as a
Crohn’s “fighter” and “warrior.” Hospital vis-
its and surgeries, unfortunately, became the
norm for her, and she spent much of the time
at home struggling -- yet, this wasn’t the face
she portrayed to the world. Fun-loving and
silly, she was never one to complain. She re-
mained hopeful even in dark times. She was
truly a girly girl, who loved fashion, beauty,
and boys. She loved to sing and dance and
post silly videos on her social media. She
was fun-loving, outgoing, friendly, and easy
to get to know. Family was everything to
Erica. She considered her mother to be her
very best friend. She was fiercely protective
of her family, including her older brother. She
had many close friends, both in Florida and in
Pennsylvania, whom she’d see often. Erica
would do anything for those she cared about
and was a loving mom to her cat, Haze. Born
in Philadelphia, Erica was raised in the Phil-
adelphia suburbs of Richboro and Hunting-
don Valley, before moving to Pompano
Beach, Florida, near her parents. She is a
2003 graduate of Council Rock North High
School. Erica is lovingly remembered by her
beloved mother, Arlene Walters; her much-
missed father, the late Robert Gordon; and
her devoted stepfather, Ken “Pops” Walters.

Erica is also survived by her older brother,
Jared Gordon; sister-in-law, Erica Brooke
Gordon; and aunt and uncle, Lori and Gary
“Doc” Cooperstein. She is the niece of the
late Gary Segal.

Philadelphia on February 12, 1936. He
passed away on June 30 at Northern Light
Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, with
his wife Florence by his side, after suffering a
massive heart attack. Hal was a graduate of
Akiba Hebrew Academy (presently Barrack
Hebrew Academy), class of 1954. He also
graduated from Drexel University in Phil-
adelphia. Hal was a pain control doctor who
did not use pharmaceuticals, and a clinical
psychologist. Hal and Florence bought a va-
cation home in Eastport in 1988 and once re-
tired, he moved there permanently. Hal
served as flotilla commander of the Eastport
Coast Guard Auxiliary, was vessel examiner
and taught boating safety courses. He was a
ham operator and volunteered with the Mari-
time Mobile Services Network. He played his

County. Hal was sick for several years, with
encephalitis and then a stroke, which con-
fined his once active life to a wheelchair and
hospital bed. He missed his activities but
never complained and kept his wonderful
sense of humor. Hal was predeceased by his
son, Lee Allen Goodman, an artist In New
York City and his parents Margaret and
Samuel Goodman. He is survived by his
wife Florence Brunner: his sister Hermina
(Norman) Kranzdorf; his daughter Robin
(Mark) Way; grandchildren Melissa and Matt
Way and Samantha (Alex) Roth, and three
great grandchildren. Donations in Hal’s
memory may be made to the Cobscook Insti-
tute in Lubec, ME 04652 or Drexel University
in Philadelphia PA 19104.
