HYMAN HANKIN
Morton Hankin, 87, of Mount Pleasant, South
Carolina, husband of Barbara Fein Hankin
entered into eternal rest Friday, June 19,
2020 at his home. Services will be private.
Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc. Mount
Pleasant Chapel. Mort was born August 6,
1932 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of
the late Jacob Hankin and Rose Gusst
Hankin. He was a member of Central High
School of Philadelphia, Class #194, lettering
in track, specializing in shot put, graduating
in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts. He attended
Temple University in Philadelphia where he
was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fratern-
ity graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in
1954. He was drafted into the US Army dur-
ing the Korean War and served at Fort Bliss
in El Paso, TX, where he was an instructor
and earned the rank of Specialist 4th Class.
Following his honorable discharge, he began
a very long and successful career with the
United States Postal Service and retired as an
Assistant Regional Postmaster General in
1987. Mort was a creative thinker, fascinated
with many things and decided, in his 40’s, to
earn a private pilot’s license. For many years
he enjoyed flying for fun with his family and
friends. After retiring, he and Barb moved
from Gladwyne, PA to Kiawah Island, SC.
They spent the next few years together, hap-
pily walking on the beach and volunteering at
Haut Gap School working to teach English as
a second language to the Spanish speaking
children of migrant workers on Johns Island.
It was during those walks he came up with
the idea to start a business helping people
sell on consignment, the fine jewelry they
own but, no longer enjoy or wear. In May of
1990 he along with his daughter, Ellen,
opened Joint Venture Estate Jewelers on King
Street, in Charleston. Although the time he
spent in the store had diminished in the past
few years, he remained happily involved with
the business. He is survived by his wife of 64
years, Barb, their three children, Lee Alan
Hankin, and his wife, Donna Jenkins Hankin
of Cary, NC, Mitchell Scott Hankin of Savan-
nah, GA, Ellen Hankin Rickenbaker and her
husband Bradford Joseph Rickenbaker of
Mount Pleasant, SC, his granddaughters,
Jennifer Erin Hankin and Karly Danielle
Hankin of Cary, NC, grandsons Braxton Louis
Rickenbaker and Grainger Hankin Ricken-
baker of Mt. Pleasant, SC to whom he was
lovingly called, “Poppi”, his sister Sandi
Hankin Lerner, of Southampton, PA, brother
Marshall Hankin of Be’er Sheva, Israel, as
well as nieces, nephews, grand nieces and
grand nephews. He will be fondly re-
membered by his family, friends, his
children’s friends and grandchildren’s friends
as a kind man with a warm smile, a twinkle in
his eye, a goofy joke and a well tied bow tie
around his neck. Memorials may be made to

search and Education, C/O MUSC Founda-
tion, 18 Bee Street, MSC Code 450, Charle-
ston, SC 29425 www.musc.edu/foundation A

J. HENRY STUHR FUNERAL HOME
Walter Hyman, July 8, 2020, age 96 of Villan-
ova, PA. Walter was born Nathan Walter Hy-
man in December of 1923 to two loving par-
ents, Jacob and Rose, and his sisters, Lily
and Lee. His family had only recently left
Russia for the US in search of a better life,
Jacob leading the way alone, and establish-
ing a home in Dalton, Georgia, before Rose
and Lily began their epic journey to America
when Lily was 1 year old. Dalton was a small
city but its factory supplied the majority of
carpet in the US and Jacob found an income
selling clothing to factory workers. While liv-
ing in Dalton, Jacob and Rose gave birth to
Walter their third child 11 years after Lee and
15 years after Lily. Walter was incredibly
proud of his family’s guts, ingenuity and ori-
ginality and often thought of these principles
in his own life’s practices. He was excited by
technology, globalization and the future but
was weary of corruption of power as his par-
ents endured persecution in Russia under
Rasputin and the Cossacks. At 18 years of
age he joined the Army air Corps where he
became the lead navigator, flying a B-17
over 36 missions. When the war ended, he
attended college at St. Joseph’s University in
Philadelphia to pursue a career in medicine
only to face financial barriers and discrimina-
tion. Frustrated but determined to succeed,
he decided to learn the plumbing distribution
business that he grew to become US Supply.
Walter was very busy building a business but
finally found some time for romance and fell
in love with his wife to be, Rita Pearlstein. He
wrote to her while he lived in Wilmington,
Delaware and she, Camden NJ. They married
and started a beautiful family in the Phil-
adelphia suburbs with their children Andrea,
Laurie and Douglas. His children reflect
fondly on their childhood filled with adven-
ture and creativity. Walter was an attentive
father, had incredible work ethic, a twinkle in
his eye when he would kibitz and was well
liked by all who knew him. Sarcastic to the
very end, he always tried to impart wisdom
with a sense of humor and never got caught
up in his own self-importance. As his grand-
children became adults, he was so proud of
what each of them had already achieved and
excited for them to chart their own individual
paths and command their own diverse fields
always asking, “Is there a path to move up?”
He is survived and will be missed by his
daughters, Andrea Friedberg and Laurie Sulli-
van, his son Doug Hyman and six grandchil-
dren and two great grandchildren. In lieu of
flowers, contributions in his memory may be
made to Mazon: A Jewish Response to Hun-
ger (www.mazon.org) or Children of Fallen
Patriots (www.fallenpatriots.org).

DEATH NOTICES
KAPELSON A man of exceptional character,
Marty Isadore at age 96
ISADORE Martin (Marty) Isadore, an accomplished
traveler, inspiring educator, and loving father,
has left us, leaving this world a poorer place.
Marty lived a life no fiction writer would have
dared to invent. A WWII veteran, he was edit-
or of the Attu Morning Sun and helped to
start the first USO. An extraordinary man, he
wrote plays and comedy for New York enter-
tainers, flew the world over as a courier, and
taught hundreds of students how to succeed.
Let's throw in being married to a soulmate,
his wife Evelyn. Despite passing away in
Texas, he felt proud to have lived most of his
life in Philadelphia. A true charmer, his gift
was to make others feel valued. He never
knew what it was to be too old or too tired to
do anything. Marty's secret to a happy life
was a an unsinkable spirit – one that eagerly
looked forward to the next adventure.
