J. HENRY STUHR FUNERAL HOME Walter Hyman, July 8, 2020, age 96 of Villan- ova, PA. Walter was born Nathan Walter Hy- man in December of 1923 to two loving par- ents, Jacob and Rose, and his sisters, Lily and Lee. His family had only recently left Russia for the US in search of a better life, Jacob leading the way alone, and establish- ing a home in Dalton, Georgia, before Rose and Lily began their epic journey to America when Lily was 1 year old. Dalton was a small city but its factory supplied the majority of carpet in the US and Jacob found an income selling clothing to factory workers. While liv- ing in Dalton, Jacob and Rose gave birth to Walter their third child 11 years after Lee and 15 years after Lily. Walter was incredibly proud of his family’s guts, ingenuity and ori- ginality and often thought of these principles in his own life’s practices. He was excited by technology, globalization and the future but was weary of corruption of power as his par- ents endured persecution in Russia under Rasputin and the Cossacks. At 18 years of age he joined the Army air Corps where he became the lead navigator, flying a B-17 over 36 missions. When the war ended, he attended college at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia to pursue a career in medicine only to face financial barriers and discrimina- tion. Frustrated but determined to succeed, he decided to learn the plumbing distribution business that he grew to become US Supply. Walter was very busy building a business but finally found some time for romance and fell in love with his wife to be, Rita Pearlstein. He wrote to her while he lived in Wilmington, Delaware and she, Camden NJ. They married and started a beautiful family in the Phil- adelphia suburbs with their children Andrea, Laurie and Douglas. His children reflect fondly on their childhood filled with adven- ture and creativity. Walter was an attentive father, had incredible work ethic, a twinkle in his eye when he would kibitz and was well liked by all who knew him. Sarcastic to the very end, he always tried to impart wisdom with a sense of humor and never got caught up in his own self-importance. Marty lived a life no fiction writer would have dared to invent. A WWII veteran, he was edit- or of the Attu Morning Sun and helped to start the first USO. An extraordinary man, he wrote plays and comedy for New York enter- tainers, flew the world over as a courier, and taught hundreds of students how to succeed. Let's throw in being married to a soulmate, his wife Evelyn. Despite passing away in Texas, he felt proud to have lived most of his life in Philadelphia. A true charmer, his gift was to make others feel valued. He never knew what it was to be too old or too tired to do anything. Marty's secret to a happy life was a an unsinkable spirit – one that eagerly looked forward to the next adventure. Lucille Ruth Kapelson (nee Rabin), a retired school teacher, died on July 3, 2020. He is past president of the Americ- an Society of Pension Actuaries and in 2009 the Society conferred a lifetime achievement award for outstanding contributions to the in- dustry. In 1964 Sam founded a benefits con- sulting firm bearing his name, later acquired by the accounting firm, Laventhol & Horwath, and ultimately emerging again from Laventhol as an independent company, from which Sam retired in 1994, and which re- tained his name for nearly another 25 years until the firm was acquired by C-BIZ, a na- tional accounting and consulting firm in 2018. Following a distinguished professional career, Sam turned his attention to educa- tional enrichment for another decade, audit- ing art history and music courses at the Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, and taking drawing and sculpting courses (Sam also took box- ing lessons and learned how to throw a curveball!). In retirement, Sam embarked on a lengthy second career of civic and com- munity engagement and philanthropy, serving as a supporter, trustee and respec- ted thought leader of many venerable Phil- adelphia arts and cultural organizations, in- cluding The Philadelphia Orchestra, The Philly Pops, The Mann Music Center, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, The Na- tional Liberty Museum and the National Mu- seum of American Jewish History, among others, and Sam was appointed a Senior Fel- low of the Foreign Policy Research Institute in 2003. Sam's tenure as a trustee or trustee emeritus of several of these organizations in- cluded periods during which the organiza- tions were especially challenged by de- creased public funding and increasing com- petition for philanthropic gifts. Sam is sur- vived, and will be greatly missed, by his be- loved wife of 62 years, Selma (Goldberg); by his children, Jacquie Stern (Eric), Steven Savitz, and Michelle McCormack; by his be- loved grandchildren Justin (Chelsey), Daniel, Julia, Ryan, and Dylan; and by his new great- granddaughter, Sofia. Services were held privately at historic West Laurel Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family sug- gests contributions to any of the organiza- tions to which Sam devoted his time and support, or to another not-for-profit of your choosing. Marty was known as being a quiet listener, but when he spoke people usually listened. For Marty, the pawn- shop was more DEATH than a NOTICES livelihood; it was what he was meant to do. Marty would tell stories of the origins of pawn brokering and under- stood how to operate the complex business. Marty knew the secret to the business: value items so you can resell them for a profit and never fall in love with the merchandise. Marty, a certified member of the Gemologic- al Institute of America could appraise a dia- mond on a customer’s finger as they walked in the door. Marty had an uncanny ability to know the value of just about any piece of jew- elry and musical instrument. Marty was also a wizard when it came to math, and could fig- ure out interest in his head. GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S RAPHAEL-SACKS www.goldsteinsfuneral.com JEWISHEXPONENT.COM WILLIAMSON Beth Spitalny Williamson, age 57 of Glad- wyne, PA passed away at her home in Ki- awah Island, South Carolina on Thursday, Ju- ly 16 th 2020. She will forever be remembered for her passion, humor, generosity and en- ergy. Beth had a substantial impact on the lives of many children and their families. She was an accomplished pediatric occupational therapist earning both her master’s degree and her PhD. Beth had a very rewarding posi- tion at Albany Med Neonatal Intensive Care, where her expertise and experience was greatly valued. She was an educator and ad- visor to numerous students at Russel Sage college where she taught and mentored both undergraduate and graduate students. She started her own clinic, Fiesta Pediatric Ther- apy, where she oversaw treatment of more than 200 children every week. Fiesta was considered one of the most progressive and effective pediatric practices in all of Arizona due to Beth’s conscientious oversight and hands on approach that she instilled in the entire staff. In addition to her contributions to education and to the treatment of severely disabled children, she generously devoted her time to the SPOON Foundation, teaching others proper therapy and feeding tech- niques for children in orphanages that she visited in India, Vietnam and China. Beth was a certified Pilates instructor, avid interior dec- orator and talented seamstress. She would tell you, however, that the most important job of all was being a mother to her two boys, Jacob (31) and Samuel (28) Spitalny. She was an incredibly devoted and loving mother and could be found on the sidelines of every single soccer game and ski race as the boys’ biggest fan. She exuded thoughtfulness in everything she did; from stocking the refri- gerator with everyone’s favorite foods to patching Sam’s favorite T-shirt so he could continue to wear it. She had a keen eye for organization and had the unique ability to make any space feel like home. There was nothing Beth would not do for her boys. Beth’s friends and family will miss the way she could make everyone laugh. Her quick wit and often wildly inappropriate sense of humor had the ability to make any situation funny. Her humor especially shined when she was in the presence of her two best friends, Suzanne and Angela. Beth is survived by her two sons, Jacob (Annie Darves) and Samuel Spitalny; her mother, Toba Coren; her identical twin sister, Lauren Sara; her sisters, Ruth Sklut and Rebecca Ynocencio; her step sisters, Jamie Herrschaft and Phyllis Berg- maier; her step-brother Steve Coren; her former husband and best friend, Peter Spital- ny; as well as her former husband, Randy Williamson. JOSEPH LEVINE and SONS www.levinefuneral.com WOOD Martin Wood, 84, born October 5, 1935, passed away early Tuesday morning after an extended illness. Marty will be remembered for his honesty, integrity, and character. Marty was proud to have been born in At- lantic City and did not venture too far during his lifetime. Marty attended Atlantic City High School and then Temple University, where he earned a degree in Business. Marty returned every summer to take his place on his life- guard stand on the Atlantic City beach. Even as Marty knew the end was near, he would look at his prize possession: a framed ACBP jacket hanging on the wall in the apartment, and express his fondness for his days as a member of the Atlantic City Beach Patrol. In college, Marty was a member of Pi Lambda fraternity, and served as its Social Chairman. Marty loved to tell stories of his college days at the fraternity and kept in touch with his “brothers” over the years. After college, Marty served in the U.S. Army. Marty worked in military intelligence and was part of a group of soldiers who helped integrate the schools in Little Rock, Arkansas. Marty re- ceived an honorable discharge and came back to Atlantic City to help run the family pawnshop. Marty’s roommate in college in- troduced him to the love of his life, Golda. Upon return from the service, Marty popped the question and Golda and Marty moved to Margate to raise a family. Golda stood by Marty’s side until the very end. Marty and Golda enjoyed a loving, loyal, and protective relationship, lasting almost 60 years. Golda was Marty’s friend, confidante and organizer. Golda made the plans and Marty showed up. Together they had two sons, Jonathan and Eric. Jonathan predeceased Marty in 2001. Marty was blessed with a loving daughter-in- law, Antoinette, and two grandchildren, Rachel and Riley. Marty loved his grandchil- dren, and especially enjoyed spending time with them on the beach. Marty was charit- able with his time as well as his finances, and served on various committees for several or- ganizations during his lifetime. Marty rose to leadership positions in several of those or- ganizations. Marty was Commodore of the Margate City Yacht Club, and President of Beth Israel Synagogue. Marty, like his father Irwin, was also proud to be a Mason. Marty was known as being a quiet listener, but when he spoke people usually listened.
