GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S
RAPHAEL-SACKS ZEBOOKER
After 71 years of marriage, the Zebookers
passed away within a week of one another:
Janet (Reibstein) at 95, on May 30th; and Eli
at 105, on June 6th. The two were insepar-
able, their marriage a paragon of love and de-
votion. Eli practiced dentistry in the U.S.
Army during WWII and then for nearly five
decades in Philadelphia. Janet studied art,
worked on Madison Avenue, and started a
graphics design agency before devoting her
time to raising her family. The Zebookers
were pioneers in Society Hill when they
moved there from Center City in the 1960s,
building one of the few homes designed by
“Philadelphia School” architect Romaldo Gi-
urgola. They remained residents of the area
until their deaths. Janet and Eli loved reading,
playing tennis, golf, and cards, and enjoyed
fine dining wherever they went. They traveled
frequently and extensively to all corners of
the world. Janet took up photography and
documented their numerous explorations. An
exceptional cook who regularly entertained
friends and family, Janet was known to all for
her kindness and her witty sense of humor.
Over 30 years of retirement, Eli’s unyielding
curiosity led to his studies and writings of
Greek mythology, British history and
Shakespeare. His passion was Philadelphia
history and Eli acquired an exemplary collec-
tion of 18th and 19th century maps, rare
books and prints which he donated to The
Athenaeum of Philadelphia (Eli P. Zebooker
Collection). Eli is among the centenarians
profiled in “If I Live to Be 100: The Wisdom
of Centenarians” (Rizzoli). Janet and Eli Ze-
booker will remain an endlessly rewarding
source of joy and inspiration to their children,
Evan (Jennifer) and Nina (William Ephraim),
cherished grandchildren Molly, Max, and
James, as well as to their extended families
and friends. A Memorial for the couple is be-
ing held for family and friends on July 29th,
2018. Email/Phone: zebooker.memorial@gmail.com

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.
The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.
