BECK DEATH NOTICES BRAUNSTEIN BERMAN Norman A. Berman, 88, of Philadelphia, died July 5 surrounded by family in his home in Bala Cynwyd. He was the beloved husband of Karen Kaskey, father of Samantha and Aman- da, and grandfather of Gabriel and Duke the golden retriever; also survived by his brother Larry S. Berman and his loving nieces and nephew. He endeared himself to his many friends and family with his joie de vivre, his sparkle, and his endless warmth. Norman's parents, Albert Berman and Libby Altman Berman, descended from European Jews who immigrated to the United States in the early 1900s, settling in the Philadelphia area, to provide better lives for their families. His father, Al, was born on a ship en route to America, and his mother was the only child of businessman Charles Altman, known fondly during and after the Depression as the "Mayor of South Street". Norman attended local elementary schools, graduating from Central High School in 1946 and from Temple University in 1950 with a business degree. Having worked for the family busi- ness, the preeminent "Al Berman" clothiers on Fifth and South, since his teenage years, Nor- man sought to pursue an avid interest in fin- ance and the stock market in the early 1960's by becoming a Securities Broker at Robin- son and Company. His career morphed into "deal-making" and spanned everything form mergers and acquisitions, real estate invest- ment, and casino development in Atlantic City during its renaissance. His specialty was in structuring deals, and his charming personal- ity made him the best "deal closer" his peers had ever seen. Quite the man-about-town, Norman remained single until he met the love of his life, attorney Karen. After half a cen- tury, Norman finally married, had a family, and devoted himself to the well-being and happiness of Karen, and daughters, Sam- antha and Amanda, who also became law- yers. His unconditional love, total support of, and pride in his family--despite being sur- rounded by three women attorneys--was per- haps his most endearing quality. Duke was his best friend and collaborator, but having grandson Gabriel in his last year of life was Norman's greatest joy. Graveside funeral ser- vices were held at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, 225 Belmont Ave., Bala Cynwyd, PA 19004 on Sunday, July 8 at noon. Relatives and friends were invited to join the family for shiva at Norman and Karen's home following the service. CALL 215-832-0749 JEWISH EXPONENT MITTMAN DEATH NOTICES MEISEL KRUPNICK Susan Ellen Krupnick (Nissenbaum) was born on March 26, 1950 in Penn Wynne, PA. Susie lived a charmed childhood, traveling the world with her parents, Charlotte and Nate Nissenbaum, and her brother, Ronald “Boots” Nissenbaum. She met lifelong friends at Penn Valley Elementary, Welsh Val- ley Jr. High and Harriton High School. Susie then attended American University, where she studied English literature and immersed herself in the hippie lifestyle of the 1960s. She participated in Woodstock, protested against the Vietnam War, and honed her lifelong commitment to healthy eating. In the spring of 1969 she met Steven Krupnick, the man who would become the love of her life, on a park bench in the American University Quad. It was love at first sight and they in- stantly became inseparable soulmates. Susie graduated from college early so she could marry Steve on January 22, 1971. From that moment on, Steve and Susie spent the next 47 years together, building a life filled with joy. They raised their three children Katy (Friedland), Betsy (Ramage), and David in the Society Hill neighborhood of Philadelphia, taking advantage of all that the city had to of- fer. Susie began her career as a English teacher and later earned a Masters in Special Education. As a young mom, she taught spe- cial ed preschoolers and ran parenting groups, determined to balance a career and motherhood. In 1984, never afraid of change, Susie started a new career path as the co-owner and operator of a punk chil- dren’s store called Kamikaze Kids. The store was situated in the heart of the countercul- ture scene of South Street and she loved be- ing part of the creative community surround- ing her storefront. Soon Kamikaze Kids be- came the gold standard for hip children’s wear throughout the Philadelphia region, growing to include additional stores in Manayunk, Suburban Square, Newtown Square, and Marlton, NJ. Susie was a “work- er bee” to her core, and after 17 years as a store owner, she decided to work with her husband Steve, a local business and prop- erty owner, relishing in her ability to take "teammate" to a whole new level. Susie was enthusiastic about everything. Being active made her feel alive and her positive energy and love of life was contagious to everyone who knew her. But despite having a robust work life and a gigantic circle of friends, the leading roles in Susie’s story were always played by her family members. A devoted wife and mother, Susie put her family first and never missed a school play, sporting event, or late-night talk. She adored her nine grandchildren and jumped at any opportunity to do a puzzle or craft project with them. Susie considered the beaches of Longport, NJ to be her “happy place” and took great pleasure in hosting her family of 16 throughout the summer. Nothing brought her more pleasure than walking with Steve along the beach, hand in hand. Susie died on Thursday, June 28th after an eight year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her husband Steve; her brother Boots and his wife, Judy Nissenbaum; her children Katy and Jason Friedland, Betsy and Jake Ramage, David and Davida Krupnick; and her grand- children Julien, Wyatt, Zoe, Violet, Charlotte, Harrison, Grayson, and Colin. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Susie’s honor to the Clarke Schools for Hearing and Speech, an organization that she loved for the support it gave her grandsons. www.clarkeschools.org/krupnickfund. In this third career, he also served as columnist for three professional publications, writing about pedi- atrics and medical communication. He also edited two professional newsletters. GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S RAPHAEL-SACKS ZEBOOKER After 71 years of marriage, the Zebookers passed away within a week of one another: Janet (Reibstein) at 95, on May 30th; and Eli at 105, on June 6th. The two were insepar- able, their marriage a paragon of love and de- votion. Eli practiced dentistry in the U.S. Army during WWII and then for nearly five decades in Philadelphia. Janet studied art, worked on Madison Avenue, and started a graphics design agency before devoting her time to raising her family. The Zebookers were pioneers in Society Hill when they moved there from Center City in the 1960s, building one of the few homes designed by “Philadelphia School” architect Romaldo Gi- urgola. They remained residents of the area until their deaths. Janet and Eli loved reading, playing tennis, golf, and cards, and enjoyed fine dining wherever they went. They traveled frequently and extensively to all corners of the world. Janet took up photography and documented their numerous explorations. An exceptional cook who regularly entertained friends and family, Janet was known to all for her kindness and her witty sense of humor. Over 30 years of retirement, Eli’s unyielding curiosity led to his studies and writings of Greek mythology, British history and Shakespeare. His passion was Philadelphia history and Eli acquired an exemplary collec- tion of 18th and 19th century maps, rare books and prints which he donated to The Athenaeum of Philadelphia (Eli P. Zebooker Collection). Eli is among the centenarians profiled in “If I Live to Be 100: The Wisdom of Centenarians” (Rizzoli). Janet and Eli Ze- booker will remain an endlessly rewarding source of joy and inspiration to their children, Evan (Jennifer) and Nina (William Ephraim), cherished grandchildren Molly, Max, and James, as well as to their extended families and friends. A Memorial for the couple is be- ing held for family and friends on July 29th, 2018.
