WEST LAUREL HILL FUNERAL HOME, Inc. www.westlaurelhill.com BROWN Bernard A. Brown, the visionary behind Na- tional Freight, Inc., one of the oldest trucking companies in the United States and the pre- decessor to the third-party logistics leader NFI, died on January 14, at the age of 96, at his home in Palm Beach Gardens, FL. Mr. Brown was formerly of Philadelphia and Vine- land, NJ. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, into a family that fled Europe from religious persecution, Mr. Brown embodied the Amer- ican dream. At the age of nine, Bernie, as he was affectionately known, and his family moved to Vineland, New Jersey. He gradu- ated from Vineland High School in 1942 and went on to attend Temple University, but left prior to graduating to help his father with his business. At an early age, Mr. Brown was en- amored with the trucking business that his father started. Following the untimely death of his father, at age twenty-six he had the vis- ion and courage to take a small company op- erating a few small dump trucks and turn it into one of the most respected trucking com- panies in the country. Mr. Brown embodied all of the attributes of a self-made business- man. He quickly figured out that business was all about relationships. In the early part of his career, he created contracts with the government, hauling supplies and goods that supported the military through World War II. He formed partnerships with local glass man- ufacturers in South Jersey which ultimately led to contracts with the largest companies in the United States. Mr. Brown was a trail- blazer in the trucking industry and was at the forefront of federal transportation regula- tions in the 1980's. His work led to the ac- ceptance of high-cube trailers and the expan- sion from traditional 48 foot trailers to 53, 55 and eventually 57 foot trailers. In 1988, he was honored as the Man of the Year by the New Jersey Motor Truck Association. He knew the importance of hard work and per- severance as he led his company through wars, recessions, natural disasters and de- regulation. Most importantly, he knew that his employees were his company's most im- portant asset and he continued his relation- ships with many of his colleagues and veter- an drivers following his retirement. His vis- ion and spirit led to what ultimately became of the largest and most successful, family- owned and operated, third-party logistics companies in North America, NFI. Today, that company employs more than 14,000 employ- ees, operates over 250 locations in the United States and Canada and serves the largest and most sophisticated shippers in the world. To this day, his sons' continue to own and oper- ate the legacy freight business that was star- ted in 1932. Mr. Brown's entrepreneurial spirit did not start and end in the trucking business. He was a real estate investor, founder of two banks and an owner of a pro- fessional hockey team. Mr. Brown saw the natural extension of his transportation busi- ness and invested in warehousing and real estate. His real estate company, Vineland Construction Company, of which he was the Chairman of the Board until his death, is led by his daughter Anne and continues to own and operate commercial and retail properties throughout the United States. He was the Chairman of the Board Emeritus of NFI, Sun Bancorp and Citizens United Bank. In 1960, Mr. Brown was a founder of Citizens United Bank, which was later sold in 1983. In 1986, he was founder of Sun Bancorp, a small, re- gional bank that operated more than 50 branches and was ultimately listed on the NASDAQ. Bernie loved sports and although it was short lived, he was the owner of the Phil- adelphia Blazers, a World Hockey Associ- ation franchise in 1971. He was the first own- er to give a million dollar contract to a pro- fessional hockey player. Mr. Brown even owned a horse farm in Vineland where he bred and raced horses under the stable name of Redwood Acres. Business was a huge part of Mr. Brown's life but it was not the only thing that defined him. He was a man who cared deeply about his family and his com- munity. Bernie is survived by his wife Shirlee, whom he loved and admired. She was the solid foundation that allowed him to pursue his dreams. They would have been married 70 years this coming February. Mr. and Mrs. Brown believed in giving back to the com- munity and never forgot their roots. Over the years Mr. and Mrs. Brown supported numer- ous local and national organizations with their time and philanthropy. Ins the mid- 1960's Mr. Brown was instrumental in found- ing the Cumberland County Community Col- lege, where he believed that quality, afford- able education should be accessible to all. TO from PLACE one A MEMORIAL CALL 215.832.0749 www.JewishExponent.com JOSEPH HERSHOFF Jeffrey “Jack” Hershoff, on January 9th, 2021 in total peace and in his sleep as we had prayed, our Father Jeffrey “Jack” Hershoff passed away. He was a dynamic and com- plicated man who lived a rich and adventur- ous life; most notably as a World Class Black Jack and Poker Player, a Vietnam Veteran, a man of faith in G-d, and restless in spirit as he was a seeker, an entrepreneur, always traveling around the country and world find- ing opportunity, adventure and in commu- nion with the G-d who lived in him, the one and only true G-d. Son of Abraham and Yetta, he was born in 1950 in the Overbrook sec- tion of Philadelphia. Brother to Michael Her- shoff, and Arlene (nee) Solomon, Brother-in- law to Mike Solomon, Beloved Father to Rita (nee) Hertzog, and Franklin McAdam by ad- option, Father-in-law to Philip Hertzog (who played many long hours of chess with Jef- frey, and even in the end could not beat him), Grandfather to Sofia, Samantha, Gavin, Emma, Isaac, Lucas, Pearl, Olivia and Fredy. He leaves behind cousins, a niece Ashley (nee) Morse, nephew Jason Solomon, great- nieces Madyson, Raegan, Ava and Great- Nephew Aiden, life long friends, classmates and business partners, and he is reunited with his parents and younger brother Mi- chael, whom he loved with his whole heart. Jeffrey was a high school drop-out, and mar- ried our Mother Tia McAdam when they were very young adults. Yet, he was an educated man who read thousands of books, and wrote thousands of more letters, and under- stood the very essence of life, through his reading, writings and musings. He was a man both at once burdened by his troubles and transcendent in all possible ways. He was honorable, loyal to the end, and as grounded in his principles as he was wistful and play- ful as a child. Stubborn-as-a-mule he beat Covid-19, and then died on his own terms. On behalf of my Father and in keeping with Jewish tradition I ask all that knew him to forgive him for any grievances and tres- passes and remember the essence of his light and love, his intelligence, his honor, his humor, his mitzvahs, and although he was not humble in life, he did the best he could to always do the right thing. And he succeeded as much as any man can succeed. In the end he told me that we were his legacy and that the faces of our children would carry our family’s legacy long into the future far bey- ond his eyes could see, and he was proud of all of us. From my dad I inherit my own tena- cious spirit of adventure, an intuition that is generational and beyond the ages, and a will to survive. He will be sorely missed, and already we feel strange being on earth without one of our parents. And yet, we know that a parents love transcends all things, even death. And as he once told us “time is not lin- ear. If we once were, we always are.” May you remember my father well. Rest In Peace Jeffrey, Jack, Maxman, Laid-back Jack, Dad. I will never forget you, and I know we will be together again. February 23, 1950 - January 9, 2021. Born in Philadelphia to Louis and Sad- ie Liss at Albert Einstein Hospital in the Ol- ney section of Philadelphia, he was given a silver cup as the "fattest baby". He lived his early years above the Louis Liss bakery, the family business on Rockland Street in the Lo- gan section of Philadelphia. At his parents’ side in the bakery he learned the skills to be- come a talented cake decorator and baker, skills that he shared with his children, grand- children, and community for the rest of his life. As a young boy and man he spent much of his summer time on the family farm in Vineland and in Atlantic City. After graduat- ing from Olney High, he received a degree in accounting from Temple University. Re- cruited to Officer Candidate School, h e entered the United States Navy and served as Lieutenant on the SS Huse, a destroyer es- cort, for two years during the Korean War. He was married in 1953 to the love of his life, Hermine Betty Eisenberg, a Bronx beauty, whom he met on a blind date while in the ser- vice. Following postings at naval bases in Key West, Florida and Newport, Rhode Island, Gil and Herm and their first child returned to live with Lou and Sadie in Philadelphia’s East Oak Lane neighborhood. They would live with Lou and Sadie for the next 11 years. With initial plans to join his father in the bakery, a change in career path led him back to school to become a doctor. While he completed his medical training Gil and Herm added four more children to the house in E. Oak Lane. He received his M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine with honors in 1961, in- terned at Philadelphia General Hospital and served a residency in OB/GYN at Temple Uni- versity Hospital. The whole troop moved to Phoenixville Pennsylvania in 1965 where he opened one of the first OB practices in the community, delivering over 8000 babies dur- ing his career. Gil loved the practice of medi- cine and took joy in helping others. He was a leader in the hospital and at his synagogue, B’nai Jacob, to which he remained dedicated until his death. He was full of life and love, with bear hugs for family and friends and was able to see the best of and take true pleasure in the people and world around him. He loved to hunt and fish and treasured 50 years of family time at the Lake Winnipesaukee Bear Island summer cottage. He loved gardening, always competing with nature to grow the earliest tomatoes and propagating beautiful flowers and plants in his greenhouse. Gil died at 91 years of age after a long struggle with Parkinson's and a one-week illness with COVID 19. Gil and Hermine were able to re- main in their home because of the loving care and phenomenal devotion of their team of caregivers from Angel Companions. Words cannot express the family's gratitude for these people who loved Gil and Hermine, truly becoming part of our family. He and Hermine, who died last year, leave a rich leg- acy of values including family, love, honor, respect and loyalty. He is survived by his five children, Jon (Andi), Bob (CJ), Larry (Wendy), Fred (Diane) and Abbe (Aaron). He took enormous pride in his 14 grandchildren and their partners Naomi (Joe), Jacob (Boom), Toby (Lalo), Hannah (Kyle), Laura (Toby), Dana (KG), Louis, Zachary (Jaz), Kyle, Claire, Nathan, Ellie (Dan), Jeremy (Helen), and Gabe (Kelly). GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS www.goldsteinsfuneral.com ROBINS My mother, Rhonda Robins passed away on April, 8th 2019 at St. Mary's Medical Center at the age of 66. My mother was born in Phil- adelphia on May, 17th 1952. She was sur- vived by her mother, Bernice Goldstein, brother, Bruce Mitchell, sons, Travis and Justin Robins, Granddaughters, Gabriella and Avery Robins, Grandson, Carson Robins, Daughter-in-law, Misty Robins, and husband, Jay Robins. Her Hebrew name was Rivkah. My mother resided in Newtown, PA. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, wife, and a great & loyal friend to those that knew her. She was a beautiful wo- man inside and out as you can see in the photo. Unfortunately, she suffered from sig- nificant health issues from a young age, but always tried to make the best out of life, and was incredibly giving. My mother was a caring woman who would do numerous good deeds/mitzvahs daily for many people in her life. She was also a brilliant business person and extremely intelligent. She played the pi- ano beautifully and could speak fluent Span- ish. My mother could put a smile on anyone's face. It has been over a year since my moth- er passed away and I still think about her every day. My family and I are trying our best to move on with our lives the best way we can, along with my amazing grandmother. My mother is resting in peace now and no longer suffering. This incredibly difficult ex- perience has provided further clarity to my life and assisted with enhanced compassion. A wise woman once told me it's important to go to bed at night and wake up each morn- ing telling your spouse and family that you love them and hug them no matter what. Hugs are like matzoh ball soup. It's also im- portant each day to do good deeds for those in need. Give to the food banks and the boys and girls clubs and make a difference. A wise Hasidic man once told me to start my day with 3 quarters in the left pocket and for each good deed/mitzvah you do during the day move to the right pocket. So before you hug and love your spouse and kids and say good night you should feel good about these good deeds too. In my mother's memory, I have created a butterfly garden in my backyard. She loved butterflies. I truly believe she will always watch over us fondly. May she R.I.P. To my family, and friends try to enjoy each and every day of your life. Love, Travis Robins Sidney J. Rona was born on December 26, 1962 in Philadelphia and grew up in Cheltenham, PA. She graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University. Rona was an accomplished journalist at a young age whose career was cut short when, be- cause of a drunk driver, she suffered severe, life-altering injuries. She moved to Texas, took advantage of the Austin scene, continued to write, and cheer on the Flyers and Phillies, living life to the fullest. Rona taught us that no matter how hard life can be, there is light. She was that light and now she lives on in all of us who loved her. She is survived by her mother Maxine Schnall Mitnick; her father Nathan Schnall; and her sister Ilene Schnall. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to AD- APT, to advocate for the rights of the differ- ently abled; to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia; or to the charity of your choice. SOFFER DEATH NOTICES DEATH NOTICES SHAPIRO SHUWALL Martin Oscar Shuwall 87, formerly of Wel- lington, FL, died Sunday January 10, 2021 in New Jersey after a long struggle with demen- tia. Born June 8, 1933 in Philadelphia to Ida (nee Redmond) and Mitchell Shuwall, Marty grew up in West Philadelphia. He recalled great times as a young child growing up across the street from Cobbs Creek Park, sledding, exploring the woods, and horse- back riding. He also spoke happily of playing tennis, as well as “box ball”, “step ball” and “stick ball” by the steps in front of their house. After losing his father at an early age, young Marty worked in a variety of jobs to help the family. Paper delivery, door to door magazine salesman, shoveling snow, soda fountain jerk, factory worker, movie usher/barker, and Good Humor Ice cream man – Marty was never afraid of hard work. In 1952, at the age of 19, Marty met the love of his life, Glenda (nee Bress) and within the year they would marry. The Korean war was going on and, in 1953, Marty enlisted in the Air Force. In his memoirs, Marty fondly re- called many adventures he and Glenda shared while they lived in Fairbanks during his years of military service. Honorably dis- charged in 1957, Marty returned to Virginia where he and his brother David acquired and ran George Friend’s bookstore, which was famous for its new and used books and unique selection of magazines. In 1961, Marty and his brother purchased one of the first Budget Rent A Car franchises in the country and Marty moved to Philadelphia to launch this new endeavor. Later joined by his brother David, they ran and grew the com- pany for the next 20 years. In 1967, Marty and Glenda moved to Lafayette Hill, Pa. Over the next many years, they raised three chil- dren and also spent many hours enjoying good times with neighbors. Marty especially enjoyed his weekly chess matches at the house as well as playing tennis and walking in the Wissahickon Park. Marty “retired” in 1982 to embark on a life of boating, fishing, travel and adventure with Glenda which they greatly enjoyed for the next 13 years. Sadly, Glenda passed in 1995. Several years after his loss, Marty was fortunate to find a second partner – enjoying over 10 rejuvenating years of travel, honing his photography skills, fine dining, great cooking and laughter with Thelma Weinberg of Wellington, Florida and Montauk, NY. Marty is survived by his three children Mitchell (Tina Walch), Julie Sinatra (Tom) and Pamela Steinberg (Phil), 8 grand- children and one great grandchild. A graveside memorial service at Haym Sa- lomon Memorial Park, Frazer, Pa, will be an- nounced at a later date. At the family’s re- quest, donations in Martin Shuwall’s name may be made to The American Brain Founda- tion or Friends of the Wissahickon. JOSEPH LEVINE and SONS www.levinefuneral.com David Shapiro passed in the evening of Sunday December 13, 2020 in Fairfax CA at the age of 83. He went peacefully, with grace, in his home. He is survived by his longtime companions and step family of 50 years; Bar- bara Engerth, Edward Engerth, Eric Engert and brother Raymond Shapiro and his wife Judie. David was born in 1937 in Phil- adelphia to Alexander and Sadie Shapiro and grew up attending Overbrook High school. David was a starting forward on one of the best high school basketball teams of all time which, in the 1950’s, featured Wilt Chamber- lin and Vince Miller and faced other promin- ent players of that era. After high school Dav- id engaged in dental product sales. Then, in Bucks County PA. he worked for Ronald Katz in building material sales. David went on to be a successful business owner in the Kens- ington, Delaware Avenue waterfront area of Philadelphia as well as South Philadelphia on Oregon Avenue and Front Street. At those locations he joined forces with Ronald Kaleck and then opened his own stores under the “Builders Salvage” name. He closed out a successful business career in the Phil- adelphia area as the owner of “Big Dave’s Building Materials”. The bustling stores had customers parked deep into Delaware aven- ue. His father Al, came out of retirement to be a force in customer sales. His nephews Joel and Todd Shapiro and relation Eric En- gert spent multiple summers in their first jobs, gaining an education from David in the subtle nuances of negotiating business deals that they still put in practice in their profes- sional careers today. Big Dave was a talented negotiator and salesman and was a physical presence in those stores carrying more sheets of plywood and sheetrock in one go than anyone else in the warehouse could manage. In 1992 he moved to California north of San Francisco in Marin County, Fair- fax California. He continued to work on ma- jor accounts in the East Coast for many years traveling between CA, PA and NJ. He also manufactured doors and windows with Bobby Horning in PA for 20 years and worked as sales representative in San Fran- cisco at “Goodman Lumber Company”. Dur- ing his 30s he started a 50 year loving rela- tionship with Barbara Engerth and became a stepfather to Edward and Eric in the 1970s.He was always gracious and generous with those who knew him, with acts of kind- ness such as lending his GMC Jimmy SUV to Eric and 2 friends to do a 3 month cross country camping trip in 1981. From 1992 through 2020 he lived in Fairfax California with Barbara primarily to be available as a grandfather to Maxwell and Ela Rae Engert. Barbara and Dave’s house was near the schools and would be a welcome retreat a few times a week for the grandkids and their friends. He will remain one with the world in Marin California where you can visit with him at a location in the nearby environs to Mt Tamalpais State Park. David was as gregari- ous and generous a person as anyone would ever meet and will be remembered fondly by everyone who got to know him over the years. VICTOR Saul Victor died after a life well lived but fell victim to the ravages and complications of Covid 19 on Tuesday, December 29, 2020. Saul was truly loved by all who knew him from his long time friends to the people he would meet casually, from his peers to the younger generation of guys and girls who considered him to be the coolest, but most especially he was a "brother" to his lifetime pals. Saul was most precious and loved by his family whether by blood or extension of his blended family, new in-laws, nieces, nephews, babies and girlfriends/boyfriends, grandchildren. He was their hero, their ment- or, their friend. There is a hole in our hearts for this man, Saul, who is survived by his wife, "the love of his life", Beverly (nee Rubin), his children Howard (Melissa) Victor, Wendy (Dean) Siegel, Ashley (Todd), Jason (Sarah) Siegel, and David (Michele) Siegel. Adored Pop Pop to Chad, Mara, Jennifer, Adam, Joshua, Noah, Sydney, Taylor, Stephanie, Joseph (Joey), Ryder and Bobby. He was beloved by a huge family of nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews who considered him their father/patriarch al- ways there to give support, love and generos- ity. Saul was born October 22, 1938 to Rose and Morris Victor in Wilmington, Delaware and spent his younger years living in Atlantic City, New Jersey with his siblings Jerry (de- ceased), Adele and Mitchell before eventually settling in Philadelphia, PA. In his teen years, he and his brother were given a trumpet by their Uncle Oscar which began their love of music. He married his high school sweet- heart Sybil and after years of working as a paperhanger, entrepreneur, and owner of Pearlstein's Furniture, he realized his dream to become a singer and forming his own band, and was he "a hit". Music was in his blood and his signature was My Way (Frank Sinatra) and Sweet Caroline (Neil Diamond). Saul lived a life of constant celebrations whether it was family events (and there were many), Saturday night dinners and a movie, traveling extensively, but his real passion was his love of golf and all he met on the course. He will be truly missed and may his memory be a blessing.
