JOSEPH LEVINE and SONS Sonia Piekarska Brodecki died January 16th in Rockville, Maryland. She was 92 and was predeceased by her husband of 74 years, Bolek, who died last July in Rockville. Sonia (also known as Zosia) was born into a loving Jewish family in Sosnowiec, Poland. She grew up singing and dancing and had a happy childhood until the German blitzkrieg smashed into Poland in September 1939, brutally taking her childhood away. Sonia had to endure years of cruelty and inhumanity after the Nazis murdered her family. She was left alone as a child slave prisoner in Nazi concentration camps, forced to live in dan- gerous conditions and work with toxic chem- icals making ammunition for the German war machine. Sonia met and married her beloved husband Bolek in the refugee camp for dis- placed Jewish Holocaust survivors in Lands- berg, Germany. After their son Joseph was born in the refugee camp, Sonia and Bolek immigrated in 1949 to Richmond, Virginia, where their daughters, Maria, Roma and Debbie were born. Sonia loved being a cit- izen of the United States and rarely a day passed when she didn’t talk about her love for this “wonderful country and wonderful American people.” In spite of all she went through, Sonia always kept her love of life. Her ability to believe in happy endings, to teach kindness and the importance of toler- ance fostered respect and humility in every- one she met. There was never a child or a dog that she didn’t kiss or marvel over, a flower that she didn’t stop to smell, or music she didn’t take note of and stop whatever she was doing to dance. Sonia and Bolek dedic- ated their lives to Holocaust remembrance, meeting with U.S. presidents, dignitaries and celebrities of all kinds, while educating thou- sands of students, teachers and anyone who cared to listen and learn about the horrors of the Holocaust. They helped establish the Vir- ginia Holocaust Museum and were active par- ticipants with the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, instilling the im- portance of Holocaust remembrance to their children and grandchildren who carry on their important work today. In addition to her chil- dren, Sonia is survived by her daughter-in- law Shelley, three grandchildren Talia, Ariella and Dylan and two great grandchildren Eli- ana and Noa. Graveside funeral services were held on Sunday, January 19 at Emek Sholom Holocaust Memorial Cemetery. She was 90. Goldie, a Holocaust Survivor, was born Golda Cukier, in Haifa, Israel. The second of four children of Joseph and Miriam (Manya) Cukier, she grew up in Sosnowiec, Poland. She was 10 years old, in fifth grade, when the Nazi's first occu- pied her hometown. When Goldie was 13, in March 1943, she and her older sister were grabbed off the street by the Nazis to be sent to a forced labor camp. Her father was able to bribe the authorities to release his daugh- ters, but when they got to the gate to be freed, a senior Nazi SS officer said to her father, "Two sisters? Only one may go, you must choose!" With her father unable to choose, Goldie volunteered to stay and for her sister to go home. Goldie survived a death march in the winter of 1945 from Graben to the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, where she was liber- ated on April 15, 1945. Goldie was left alone at 15 years old, the sole survivor of her immediate and exten- ded family. After liberation, she met her fu- ture husband Sol, also concentration camp survivor, in a Displaced Persons camp in Stuttgart, Germany. They were married 66 years, until Sol's death in June, 2013. They came to the United States as refugees in 1948, and after a brief time in New York City, moved to Vineland, where they rebuilt their lives as chicken farmers and egg processors. They had three children, and Goldie was totally devoted to rebuilding Jewish life and to her family. Goldie published her memoir, with Sol, entitled I Choose Life, in 2009. He received his J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law (with honors, 1996). Evan lived and worked in Atlanta, Georgia, where he met, fell in love with, and married Lanie. He was a Partner with Troutman Sanders LLP special- izing in employment and labor law and a past chair of the Atlanta Pro Bono Committee and served as a member of the Board of Direct- ors for the Atlanta Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Section. He was recog- nized for excellence in The Best Lawyers in America for Employment Law-Management and Labor Law. He was also recognized by Atlanta Magazine, and was selected as a Leg- al Elite Georgia Top Lawyer by Georgia Trend Magazine. He wrote on legal topics for sever- al respected publications. With respect to charitable causes, Evan believed in the im- portance of not only providing financial sup- port but his time as well. Evan's civic and community accomplishments were many. He organized and held annual fundraising walks for March of Dimes Georgia. He was in- volved with the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, held Board Memberships on the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and The LAM Foundation, and was a former Board Chair of Georgia Lawyers for the Arts and a board member for more than 20 years. He was chosen for Leadership Atlanta, Class of 2017, where he joined a select group in supporting public interest initiatives. Evan loved his pro bono work because it constantly reminded him how so many in society need help -- and how powerful help from a caring lawyer can be. While living down South, he remained proud of his Philadelphia roots, best reflec- ted in his continued dedication to the city’s sports teams. Since boyhood, he was an avid baseball card and sports memorabilia collect- or. While in the ICU at Johns Hopkins Hospit- al he found extra strength wearing his Phil- lies hat and from the inspirational Eagles quote, “We’re from Philadelphia and we fight.” His most cherished and important ac- complishment was his family. A defining trait was his selflessness. He always had a kind and helpful word for others. Even throughout his many health struggles he continued to give support to others. Rosenfeld (b. 7/19/27 – d.12/26/19 ) – passed away Thursday even- ing at Jefferson-Cherry Hill, surrounded by loving family. The second son of the late Anna Ceaser and David Rosenfeld, Malcolm and his beloved older brother Jay (d. 2003) were born and raised in the West Oak Lane neighborhood of Philadelphia. As a child, Malcolm was given the opportunity to attend Blue Mountain Camp in the Poconos; the ex- perience was transformative and he returned for many summers after as a counselor. Malcolm served in the Army Air Corps at the end of WWII, where he earned commenda- tion, although just a teenager, for his skills in building and physical fitness training. He at- tended Temple University on the GI Bill. He had a lifelong love of boats and, without the resources to buy one as a very young man, he built his first boat in his parents’ garage. He was introduced to his future wife, Joan Emanuel, while visiting the Jersey shore with friends. They raised four daughters together, living in Moorestown, NJ, and were involved in many charitable causes. Malcolm built his career in the mortgage industry, first in resid- ential as an executive at South Jersey Mort- gage (Camden, NJ) later known as Associ- ated East Mortgage and, for most of his ca- reer, as a real estate investor and independ- ent commercial mortgage banker, arranging financing for apartment complexes, business and shopping centers, and hotels. Malcolm had a reputation for integrity and proficiency in all his business dealings. He was a fre- quent speaker at National Mortgage Bankers Association conferences, and shared advice to homeowners and investors through his column “Malcolm Rosenfeld Says…” which ran in The Philadelphia Bulletin in the 1960s- 70s. He was known, also, for his sense of hu- mor, and patiently-orchestrated practical jokes – always unexpected, as he was nor- mally a reserved and businesslike gentleman. Malcolm enjoyed building as a side interest and, with his artist-wife, designed their fam- ily’s distinctive, mid-century modern home (1958), participating in the initial construc- tion, later expansions, and most of the land- scaping and maintenance; he maintained a frequently-used home workshop. In 2006, he suffered his first serious stroke which led him to retire. He became a resident of Miami Beach, FL, shortly after where his two young- er daughters and all four of his grandchil- dren reside. Malcolm is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joan, and their daughters: An- drea Rosenfeld, Lisa (Michael) Rosen, Nanci Rosenfeld, and Susan Johnson; as well as four grandchildren: Max and Adam Frater; Nicole and Evan Johnson. Friends and family will participate in a memorial service at: Rodeph Shalom, 615 N. Broad St., Phil- adelphia on Monday, December 30 at 11:30 a.m. Shiva will be at the family home in Moorestown for three days following me- morial. SPINDLER DEATH NOTICES SPINDLER Ruth Spindler (Nee Rosen) of Gwynedd, PA passed away peacefully on December 30, 2019 at the age of 91. Ruth was born May 22, 1928 to parents Florence Marks Rosen and William Rosen in Philadelphia, PA. She is survived by her daughter Lynda Wackenhut Wilkes (Daniel), step daughter Patricia Spind- ler Henderson, her grandsons Garrett Wilkes (Lauren), Tristan (Fevie) Henderson, Fre- drick Wackenhut IV and nieces Carol Regan and Barbara Gummel. Ruth was predeceased by her husband Charles Spindler, her son Fredrick Wackenhut III, and brother Donald Rosen. After graduating from Simon Gratz High School Ruth worked for many years for Equitable Life Insurance Company while at- tending Temple University. After marrying and raising her children. she became pas- sionately involved with Israel Bonds and or- ganized leadership trips to Israel for US sup- port. During many visits to Israel, Ruth sup- ported several underserved orphanages for girls by connecting them with US benefact- ors. She developed a strong love for the country and considered Israel her second home. During these productive years much of her time was dedicated to charitable fun- draising work for Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and Congregation Beth Sholom in Elkins Park. She enjoyed a wide circle of colleagues and friends in the Sisterhood and Auxiliary who she kept in close touch with whenever possible. Ruth’s long life was filled with enthusiasm and purpose. Most of all, she enjoyed sharing good times with friends and her family, especially traveling with her husband Karl. Always concerned with the world around her, she was an avid reader and craft artist. She took great care to add a de- gree of beauty and elegance wherever she was. Decorating her homes from East to West coasts gave her great pleasure as did the elaborate miniature dollhouse collections she created; recently donated to a museum. Many thanks and much appreciation go to The Abramson Center staff for their incred- ible care during the past few years. Special thanks to her loving and compassionate com- panions, Eileen, Ethel, Beata and Jill who helped make her life dignified and manage- able. We will be forever grateful for them. GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S RAPHAEL-SACKS 6 JANUARY, 2020 complishments could fill chapters, primary to Judge Weinstein’s life has been his love and support of Israel. Perhaps above all, to his family and close friends, Judge Weinstein will be remembered for his spirit of tzedakah –a Hebrew term that literally means “justice,” but with a special emphasis on charity, such that the one who gives benefits as much as if not more than DEATH the one NOTICES who receives. Judge Weinstein will be remembered, first and fore- most, for embodying tzedakah, as he has made an impact on many lives, locally and in Israel. Judge Weinstein served as a member of the New Jersey-Israel Commission, and as President of the Jewish Federation of At- lantic and Cape May Counties, the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) of Atlantic County and Chairman of both the UJA/Federation annual campaign and the State of Israel Bonds campaign for both At- lantic and Cape May Counties. He was a founding member of the Atlantic County Chapter of the National Conference of Christi- ans and Jews, founding member Board of Directors of Shalom House, and founding member of the Holocaust Resource Center at Stockton College of New Jersey, of which he was also Chairman of the Citizens Advisory Council from 1989-1994. He also served as a member of the Board of Governors of the Jewish Agency for Israel and as a member of the Boards of United Israel Appeal and United Jewish Appeal. The list is not complete, as Judge Weinstein and his wife Claire, who sur- vives him, have planted seeds that continue to nourish communities and Jewish organiza- tions, both locally and abroad, they have sup- ported in Israel and locally. In honor of his great contribution to the ongoing support of Ethiopian Jews in Arad, Israel, Judge Wein- stein has been awarded Honorary Citizenship by the City of Arad, and loved most his visits to Israel, and the community he supported, which could not be named without bringing tears to Judge Weinstein’s eyes. At home, Judge Weinstein was instrumental in found- ing Shalom House, the idea of which came in 1970 when along with Murray Schneier and Harry Brown, Judge Weinstein wondered what would become of aging Jews who lived in the inlet section of Atlantic City displaced by the casinos. Judge Weinstein was also active in the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center, and in his role as past President of the JCC referred to the organiza- tion as “the center of Jewish life on this is- land,” to which in an Atlantic City Press art- icle, Associate Executive Director Marg Man- cuso told the Press, “The JCC is 100 years old, and he’s been a member for 75 of them.” Judge Weinstein, a member of Shirya Hayam synagogue of Ventnor, is survived by his wife, Claire, his son Julian and his partner Lauren Gonzalez, and his son James and wife Beverly Weiss. The family asks that dona- tions be made in honor of Judge Gerald Weinstein, to the Sara & Sam Schoffer Holo- caust Resource Center at Stockton Uni- versity, and the Milton and Betty Katz JCC. GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS DEATH NOTICES WEINSTEIN The Honorable Gerald Weinstein, of Margate, New Jersey, surrounded by his beloved fam- ily left this life on Monday evening, Decem- ber 30, 2019, to enter his eternal life. Born in 1930 and raised in Atlantic City on Tenness- ee Avenue, Judge Weinstein was educated in the public school system, and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1948. It was earlier, in Massachusetts Avenue Elementary School, that he met his life-long love, then Claire Modiano of Atlantic Avenue (near the corner of Maryland) in Atlantic City, and said often, when he looked at her framed photo from that era, “First time I saw her I knew I would marry her. I said, that one is mine.” A declaration that indeed became true. Judge Weinstein and Claire formed a relationship as he went on to receive his Bachelor of Arts from Dickinson College in 1952—the same year the intended couple married on Septem- ber 7th. That same month, the couple moved to Fort Lee, in Petersburg, Virginia, where Judge Weinstein served in the U.S. Army for two years. Upon his completion of military service, he returned to Dickinson School of Law, and earned his LL.B. in 1956, and his J.D. in 1964. During the law school years at Dickinson, and his early career practicing law, Judge Weinstein and Claire started a family. Their first son Julian was born in Carl- isle, Pennsylvania, in 1955, and James Modi- ano Weinstein born in Atlantic City in 1958. Judge Weinstein was formally admitted to the New Jersey Bar Association in March of 1957 while practicing as an active trial lawyer at the firm of Lloyd, Megargee, Steedle, Wein- stein and Horn; he became Partner in 1964. In 1968, he was a founding member of the firm Horn and Weinstein, formed with Le- onard Horn. From 1969 to 1978, Horn and Weinstein became Horn, Weinstein, Kaplan and Goldberg, the period in which Judge Weinstein’s dedication to what would be- come several decades of service in the in- terest of civic and community concerns began to flourish. During this time, he served as County Counsel for Atlantic County, At- lantic County Freeholder in 1971, counsel to the Atlantic County Sewage Authority as well as a member of the New Jersey Economic Development Counsel for two terms, as ap- pointed by Governor Richard Hughes. In 1978, Judge Weinstein was appointed to the bench and prior to retirement from the New Jersey Superior Court in 1995 he had served for 17 years as a trial judge, including seven years as Presiding Judge of the Civil Division of the Court for Atlantic and Cape May Counties. He presided over myriad cases, and was named by the New Jersey Law Journal among the top twelve trial judges in the State of New Jersey. A number of his opinions have been officially reported, or the subject of textbook comment. He was elected a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation. During his tenure on the Court, he served in every divi- sion including Probate and General Equity. From 1992 to 1995, he was the designated Environmental Judge for Atlantic and Cape May Counties. Following retirement in 1995, Judge Weinstein remained involved in the legal profession as an arbitrator and mediat- or, and in 1997 returned as Special Counsel to the firm he had founded. His time and en- ergy continued to flow to his many civil and philanthropic interests. In 1998, Judge Wein- stein received the honor Professional Lawyer of the Year from the New Jersey Commis- sion on Professionalism in the Law. He has also served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Stockton College. While his pro- fessional and community interests and ac- complishments could fill chapters, primary to Judge Weinstein’s life has been his love and support of Israel. Perhaps above all, to his family and close friends, Judge Weinstein will be remembered for his spirit of tzedakah –a Hebrew term that literally means “justice,” but with a special emphasis on charity, such that the one who gives benefits as much as if not more than the one who receives. Judge Weinstein will be remembered, first and fore- most, for embodying tzedakah, as he has made an impact on many lives, locally and in Israel. Judge Weinstein served as a member EXPONENT of JEWISH the New Jersey-Israel Commission, and as President of the Jewish Federation of At- lantic and Cape May Counties, the Milton and Betty Katz Jewish Community Center (JCC) of WEINTRAUB Ruth Weintraub (nee Rosenzweig) on November 26, 2019. She was 102 years old.Devoted Wife to the late Joseph Wein- traub.Devoted Mother to the late Harriet Weintraub and her late mother and father. Cherished sister and aunt to many nieces and nephews. Ruth was very bright and would have succeeded in any profession. An Expert in Antiques and collectables and an invalu- able manager, for quite a few years, of her father’s Antique store on 10 th and Pine Streets in Philadelphia. She devoted 50 years of her life to caring for her daughter who had severe disabilities. Despite those difficult challenges, Ruth never complained or felt sorry for herself. She had an incredible per- sonality, keeping everyone laughing in the as- sisted living facility she resided at for the last 15 years, even in her last few month of life.
