PERELMAN PACHTER
Henry, December 13, 2018, of Havertown,
PA. Beloved husband of the late Berta (nee
Becker), loving father of George (Joanne),
Ze’ev (Rahel), and Shirley (the late Barry) Lu-
bitz; cherished grandfather of Diana (Nick),
Shelley (Geoff), Jill (Jimmy), Tommy, An-
drea and Carly, and great grandfather of Elli-
ott, Derek, Valerie and Zachary. Graveside
Services were held December 14th at Monte-
fiore. Contributions in his memory may be
made to Magen David Adom www.afmda.org.
Born in Vienna, Austria, Henry lived his child-
hood in the thriving Jewish community of
Teplice (Teplitz), Bohemia, Czech Republic
until the first days of the Nazi occupation in
1938. At the age of 14 Henry left Teplice for
Israel with the Kindertransport rescue efforts
of the Sochnut /Jewish Agency, never to see
his family again. As soon as the British Man-
date accepted Jewish enlistments Henry
joined the British Army, serving 5 years, and
participating in the famous Battle of El
Alamein in the Egyptian desert where he
worked in the optical instruments shop,
maintaining the optical systems within tanks
which were used against the anticipated Ger-
man advance. Henry had also served in the
Haganah and later worked as a civilian for the
IDF until he found a position with National
Cash Register, as a bookkeeping machine
mechanic. In January 1958 Henry, his wife
Berta, their 2 young sons, George & Ze'ev
and their dog Teddy came to Philadelphia,
where his 3rd child, Shirley was born 3
months later. After several jobs in the city
Henry established Pachter Office Machine
Co., and soon opened a retail typewriter store
at 704 Market Street (same spot where
Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration Of
Independence). Later he created the House
Of Typewriters, on Township Line in Upper
Darby. He was one of the last men standing
in the typewriter industry upon retiring in
1988. In retirement, Henry pursued his pas-
sion studying porcelain arts, specializing in
Meissen collection and restoration. He be-
came an official ASA appraiser for museums,
antique dealers and collectors nationwide.
He made many trips to European countries as
an active member of the Keramos Society,
and was perhaps one of the few U.S. citizens
ever to be invited to visit the old Meissen
factory in communist East Germany in the
1980s, as he was researching their archives
for the origin of the art. In recognition of his
acheivements, the Keramos Society presen-
ted Henry Pachter with an honorary doctoral
degree. Meissen porcelain was popular with
European royalty and the affluent in the 18th
& 19th century and is still highly collectible
today. Henry and Berta enjoyed their winter
home in Tarpon Springs, Florida until Berta's
passing in 2011. Henry was also a lifelong
lover of the opera and classical music, and a
talented violinist and accordion player, where
in Florida he was an active musician in a
small orchestra. Henry passed at 95 but his
memory and storytelling charms will last
forever. JOSEPH LEVINE and SONS
