Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.

The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.

JOSEPH SPORKIN
DEATH NOTICES
SPORKIN Merrill “Mel” Sporkin, 89, October 21, 2017,
of Merion and The Watermark, Center City.

Beloved husband to Barbara (Goldberg), de-
voted son to Nathan and Mayme Sporkin,
cherished father to Andi Sporkin and Dr.

Bradley (Karyn) Sporkin, grandfather to Dani-
elle (Jasen Kelly) Sporkin and Eric Sporkin,
brother to Odette Steinberg. A man respec-
ted for his wisdom, integrity, outgoing per-
sonality, terrible jokes and love of family. A
Wynnefield native who also grew up in At-
lantic City and New York, Merrill was gradu-
ated from Central High School and Penn
State University and served in the US Army
101 st Airborne Division during the Korean
War. Merrill met Barbara on Chelsea Beach
and proposed on their first date. While
things didn’t progress quite as quickly as
he’d wished, they wed in 1953 and raised
their family in Merion in a home he’d de-
signed and built for them. Merrill spent every
summer of his life at the shore, for many
years with three generations in a beach
house in Ventnor and then at The Berkley
Condominiums. He loved travelling around
the US and the world with his favorite com-
panion, Barbara; playing the piano and
singing along; sharing his experiences and
knowledge through writing; celebrating at
family gatherings; and connecting with relat-
ives he’d uncovered through genealogy re-
search. A leading force in the commercial
door and hardware industry, he was Founder,
President and CEO of Sporkin Associates, a
prominent manufacturers’ rep firm of major
brands, and author of numerous federal and
state door standards and codes that im-
proved public safety. He completed the rig-
orous testing to achieve Certified Door Con-
sultant (CDC) status. After selling his com-
pany, he didn’t retire; instead, he became the
nation’s foremost expert witness on door and
hardware lawsuits including product defects,
forensics and disability issues, working until
last year with attorneys nationally on more
than 500 cases. In his later years, he also
became a licensed Realtor and enjoyed work-
ing with the team at Herbert Yentis and Co.

Earlier in his career, he was active in building
and construction with his father, with a port-
folio of residential properties in Philadelphia,
Margate and Ventnor Heights and the
Brookhaven Shopping Center in Chester. His
commitment to doing good reached beyond
his professional life. Merrill was a founding
member of Lower Merion Community Watch.

During the 1970s gas rationing, he dis-
covered that service stations were refusing
drivers with out-of-state tags, including his
daughter in college and himself. Building a
coalition of stakeholders and securing local
media coverage, he lobbied state officials and
changed policy. Merrill had a bigger-than-life
presence - whether performing in musical
theatre, uncovering the “aha” element to
solve complex forensic cases, charming
healthcare aides, driving fearlessly through
the worst weather conditions, jumping into
the newest technology or simply being with
family. While his voice might be silenced,
he’ll be remembered and loved forever. Ser-
vices were private. Contributions in his
memory can be made to American Friends of
Magen David Adom.
