Milton Abowitz, age 80, died on December
26, 2017. Devoted husband of Estelle (nee
Kaplan); father of Esther Lander (Mark);
grandfather of Cassie, Quin, Shayna, and
Lane; and brother of Arnold Abowitz and Gail
Taveres (Jack). He received his law degree
from University of PA School of Law and his
LLM in tax from NYU. Milton was a solo

ALBERT Nina Albert, beloved wife, mother and grand-
mother, passed away peacefully on Dec. 29,
2017 in her home at the age of 85 surroun-
ded by family, after a long illness. Nina was
born in Phila. in 1932 to Irwin and Betty Gas-
sell. She attended Lower Meawr School of
Social Work and Villanova Universityrion
High School and then Goucher College be-
fore marrying the love of her life, Billy Albert,
in 1952. Nina completed her undergraduate
studies at the University of Pennsylvania
whereto earned degrees in Sociology and
Education. She later earned Master's De-
grees from both Bryn Mawr School of Social
Work and Villanova University. In addition to
raising three children, Nina had a rewarding
career as a psychotherapist working with in-
dividuals, couples and families. She also in-
terviewed Holocaust survivor families as part
of a study on intergenerational trauma. Nina's
philanthropy included being a Lion of Judah
with Jewish Federation and a Board Member
of the Miami City Ballet since 2013. An ac-
complished pianist herself, Nina experienced
great joy in her many roles with the Curtis In-
stitute of Music. She served on the Board of
Trustees, 2005-2017, the Education and Stu-
dent Life Committees, 2006-2016, and the
Stokowski Committee,2009-2014. She also
served as an active member of the Curtis
Friends Board, 2002-2008, serving as Chair
2005-2008, and as a Curtis Host, 2003-2013.

Earlier this year, Nina was elected Trustee
Emerita. One of Nina's greatest pleasures
was traveling the world with Billy. She was
especially thrilled to celebrate her 80th Birth-
day in Israel with her entire family. Nina had a
great love for the visual and performing arts,
she was an avid reader, and enjoyed playing
bridge, golf and tennis. Nina was totally de-
voted to her family, friends and clients. She
had enormous empathy and cared deeply
about helping those in need. Nina is survived
by her loving husband Billy, her children Jim
and wife Bette Ann, Dini and husband Mi-
chael, Pamela and husband Mike, and her six
grandchildren who called her Nummy; Brit-
tany, Remy, Sydney, Danny, Julian and Eli-
ana. Also, lovingly remembered by her late
daughter , Linda. A funeral service was held
on Sunday, December 31st at Joseph Levine
and Sons Memorial Chapel (West) 2811 West
Chester Pike, Broomall, PA 19008. The burial
followed at Haym Solomon Memorial Park,
200 Moores Rd., Malvern, PA 19355. Contri-

frey Rubin (Marcia). Cherished grandmother

BIRNHAK television and talk radio shows and has parti-
cipated as a speaker and panelist for many
health oriented events and fairs. She also has
been a guest lecturer for many of the area’s
medical colleges and universities. She also
was a creative person with interests in the
arts and theatre and was an inspirational
force for many people, especially women.

Marilyn is survived by her husband of 63
years, Bob, son, John, daughter, Valerie. She
also is survived by her brother, Stuart (Es-
telle) Price, grandchildren Lauren, David,
Aleks, Rae, and several nieces and nephews.

RAPHAEL-SACKS Marilyn Price Birnhak, 85, of Bala Cynwyd,
PA, the founder of Weight Watchers of Phil-
adelphia, Inc. 53-1/2 years ago. She holds
the distinction of being the owner of the
longest running continuously owned and op-
erated franchise of Weight Watchers Interna-
tional. She died at Lankenau Hospital in
Wynnewood, PA from complications of pan-
creatic cancer, surrounded by her family and
close friends on Saturday afternoon (January
13). Marilyn had worked with Weight Watch-
ers longer than any person in the world. A
native of the Fern Rock section of Phil-
adelphia, she first became affiliated with the
international weight-management company
while living in New York where she attended
Weight Watchers founder Jean Nidetch’s
weight-loss class to lose weight personally.

Following her successful weight-loss which
she accomplished along with her husband J.

Robert Birnhak, she became a dynamic and
inspiring Leader for the program and the only
person within Weight Watchers International
who worked directly with and learned from
Jean Nidetch, the founder of Weight Watch-
ers. In 1964, she and her husband started
Weight Watchers of Philadelphia, Inc., the
Philadelphia franchise, in the Mount Airy sec-
tion of the city with two meetings and just
eight members, some of whom were their
family. Now in its 54 th anniversary year, the
company employs some 500 people serving
as many as 20,000 members weekly in more
than 450 meetings in 11-counties in South-
eastern Pennsylvania and Southwestern, New
Jersey. She was active in operating the com-
pany almost right up to the time of her death.

She was very proud to serve and employ so
many people in her community. Though the
years, the company has helped hundreds of
thousands of people to live and enjoy healthi-
er lifestyles by successfully losing weight and
has provided employment to hundreds of
employees who reside within their geograph-
ic marketing regions in the Keystone and
Garden states. Although busy and totally
committed to operating their business, the
Birnhaks have made time to volunteer on
boards of numerous charitable and non-profit
organizations. They have been singled out for
honors by many including, The Madlyn and
Leonard Abramson Center for Jewish Life
where they dedicated the Birnhak Transition
Care Unit. Bob and her son, John, the com-
pany’s executive vice president, also served
on its board of directors. They have addition-
ally received honors from the Ben Gurion
University of the Negev, Magen David Adom,
The Philadelphia Theatre Company and the
National Liberty Museum. The Birnhaks have
been long time members of Beth Sholom
Congregation in Elkins Park, PA and Bob has
served on its board of directors. Marilyn also
is a founder of the AIM Academy, an educa-
tional program for bright children who learn
differently. In addition, the Birnhaks have
been active in fund raising and contributing
to numerous causes, including, the Jewish
Federation of Greater Philadelphia, The Well-
ness Community, The United Way, The Hero
Scholarship Thrill Show, Inc., American Heart
Association, Alzheimer’s Association, Beth
Sholom Congregation, Weight Watchers of
Philadelphia Feeds The Hungry, The Kidney
Foundation, Susan B. Komen Race For The
Cure, and the Philadelphia Theatre Company.

Marilyn and her daughter, Tracey, who prede-
ceased her after a long and courageous battle
with breast cancer, founded the “I Have
Strength Fund” associated with the Ab-
ramson Cen ter at the U ni ver sity of
Pennsylvania. The Birnhaks have endowed
the Nutritional Counseling Center located in
the Perelman Center For Advance Medicine.

Marilyn and Bob also have a daughter, Valer-
ie, who is an artist who lives in Maine. Mar-

BLAUSTEIN Rosalind Blaustein (nee Rusoff) January 2,
2018, of Springfield, PA. Wife of Alan
Blaustein; Mother of Dean Blaustein; Grand-
mother of Max Blaustein; Sister of the late
Bernice Moll. Also survived by nieces and

BOMZE Paul E. Bomze, Esquire of Haverford PA,
passed away on December 30th, 2017. Paul
was an accomplished athlete and received
distinguished honors in college. He was cap-
tain of the basketball team at Central High
School and an outstanding tennis player. He
graduated from Cornell University, where he
received a Bachelor’s degree in Political Sci-
ence and an MBA in Taxation. Then he went
on to earn a law degree from the University
of Pennsylvania. Paul was sworn in to the US
Supreme Court in 2014. Paul was a loving
husband, father, grandfather, and friend, and
was there for everybody at all times. He is
survived by his wife of 61 years, Sandra, and
his children Fred (Judy) and Beth Blum (Dav-
id), his grandchildren Michael, Amanda,
Steven, Lauren, and Allie, and was prede-
ceased by his grandson David. Funeral ser-
vices were held January 2nd, 2018 at Main
Line Reform Temple, and contributions in his

BROOKS Shirley Brooks passed away on Saturday,
December 16, 2017 at her home in Alphar-
etta, GA. Ms. Brooks grew up in Worcester,
MA the daughter of Ethel and Harry Brooks
and sister of Martha (Brooks) Steinberg
(married to Benjamin Steinberg- deceased)
and Kaila (Brooks) Osuna. Upon graduation
from high school, she attended and earned a
degree from the Massachusetts College of
Art. Ms. Brooks was a most accomplished
fine artist and, in Boston, went on to a highly
successful and award-winning career in the
field of commercial art. Additionally, she also
studied and played the violin. She leaves be-
hind her children- Larry (Gordon) Dratch and
his wife Kathy Waring, her daughter Marlene
(Dratch) Merrill (married to Brian Merrill- de-
ceased), and her son Alan Dratch and his
wife Angie. She also leaves behind her sister
Kaila (Brooks) Osuna and her husband Or-
lando, her granddaughters Chelsea and
Melissa Merrill, grandsons Benjamin and
Samuel Dratch, nieces Sheila Greenshields,
Ellen Osuna, nephew Jerry Steinberg as well
as numerous great nieces and nephews. Ms.

Brooks is predeceased by husbands Paul
Gordon, Joseph Dratch, Morris Kaplan and
