SEGAL DEATH NOTICES
SEGAL Bernard L. Segal, MD, FACC, Cardiologist, of
Villanova PA and Palm Beach FL, passed
away peacefully on Wednesday, February 10,
2021 in Palm Beach, Florida after a brief ill-
ness, surrounded by his family, at age 91. He
is survived by his beloved spouse, Idajane
Fischman Segal, cherished daughter, Jody
Segal Reinbold (Kirk), and precious grand-
children, Darby and Pierce. Dr. Segal was
born in Montreal, Canada during the great de-
pression to Russian immigrants. He received
his Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medi-
cine degrees from McGill University in
Montreal. He was elected to the Alpha Omega
Alpha Honor Society and graduated with hon-
ors in 1955. Dr. Segal completed his intern-
ship at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal
and completed his first year of residency at
Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. His second year
of residency was completed at Beth Israel
Hospital of Harvard University, under Paul
Zoll, MD, who developed the pacemaker. Dr.

Segal then completed a one-year Cardiology
fellowship at Georgetown Medical Center and
the National Institutes of Health under the tu-
telage of W. Proctor Harvey, MD and Eugene
Braunwald, MD. While in Washington, Dr.

Harvey introduced him to William Likoff, MD,
who asked Dr. Segal to join him in practice
but agreed to wait because Dr. Segal had
already accepted a position at St. George’s
Hospital in London, England as a U.S. Public
Health Fellow. At St. George’s, he furthered
his post doctoral training under two of the
leading cardiologists of his day, Aubrey
Leatham, MD and Paul Wood, MD. Dr. Segal
returned to Philadelphia where he spent 24
years with Dr. Likoff at Hahnemann Uni-
versity Hospital and was later appointed Chief
of Cardiology. He went on to develop the suc-
cessful Philadelphia Heart Institute at Presby-
terian Medical Center. After Dr. Segal spent
10 years at Presbyterian, Allegheny Uni-
versity persuaded him to move his entire fac-
ulty to develop a new cardiovascular network
and serve as their Senior Vice President. In
1998, Dr. Segal and his faculty joined
Thomas Jefferson University, where he
served for ten years as Director of the Divi-
sion of Cardiology. In 2010 through his
Foundation, he endowed the Bernard L. Segal
Chair in Clinical Cardiology at Jefferson. He
retired in 2016 after practicing medicine for
over 60 years. He helped pioneer modern
cardiology as a physician, investigator and
educator. His 12 books and 375 scientific pa-
pers established him firmly in the vanguard
of cardiology. Dr. Segal has served on the ed-
itorial boards of several medical journals. He
was a member of Philadelphia County Medic-
al Society PAMED and Fellow and Emeritus
member of the American College of Cardi-
ology, where he served on many committees
as well as their Board of Trustees. Dr. Segal
is also past Fellow of the American Heart As-
sociation; the American College of Physi-
cians; and the Laennec Society. Dr. Segal has

Audrey grew up in Atlantic City, NJ and atten-
ded Temple University where she earned both
her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Educa-
tion plus 60 additional credits and was li-
censed as a drug and alcohol counselor. She
worked all of her academic career with the
School District of Philadelphia. She also
helped start and run her late husbands ad-
vertising newspaper, Smart Shopper. She
was a voracious reader, talented oil painter,
seamstress/sewer, and always had fresh
flowers and plants in her home. She enjoyed
her family home in Margate, NJ during the
Summers, exercised regularly, ate a healthy
diet complete with vitamins/supplements,
and played the stock market. She most liked
connecting with and listening to people, but
did not need a huge circle of friends. She had
season tickets to Temple University basket-
ball, various theaters, museums and went to
the Phila. Flower show yearly. She had an in-
satiable thirst for travel and saw much of the
world. She loved shopping on the sale rack
and never paid full retail for anything. She
will be most remembered for her myriad of
sayings, one of the most memorable being
“Life is not a dress rehearsal”. The family re-

TANNENBAUM SPIEGEL
Edward Michael Spiegel, 81, died on January
29, 2021 in Pennsylvania. Edward was origin-
ally from Irvington, NJ where he grew up
with his sister Civia Spiegel Yellin and par-
ents, Fannie Waxman Spiegel and Ned
Spiegel. After graduating from Irvington High
School (1957), he went on to attend and
graduate from Rutgers University. Edward
served in the United States Coast Guard. He
was a retailer/co-owner of Fierstien Olds-
mobile in Philadelphia, Levis Hot Dogs in
Jenkintown, PA/Ocean City, NJ, The
Smithville Zoo in Smithville, NJ, and This
Place Rocks at The Barn in Bucks County,
PA. Edward Spiegel dedicated countless
hours and many years to supporting youth
athletics. He coached Little League Baseball
for GYAC in Glenside PA and helped organize
the JJBL in 1985, where he served as the
leagues’ first commissioner. Some may even
remember him as Santa Claus, where he vo-
lunteered for many years to help bring joy to
underserved children in Philadelphia. An avid
NY Yankees fan, he enjoyed watching sports,
talking about sports, and playing along with
Jeopardy! each evening. He loved boating,
summer vacations, spending time at the
shore, and being with his family. Edward
married his wife after just 6 months of dat-
ing. The dynamic duo remained inseparable
for over 50 years. Like most, they endured
the highs and the lows, but were always at
each other’s side no matter what. His
greatest joy had been watching his grandchil-
dren play sports and perform in theater. Be-
loved husband of the late Karen Spiegel (nee
Fierstien). Loving Father of Neil (late Beth;
Angie) Spiegel and Dr. Ian (Crystal) Spiegel.

Grandfather to Ryan, Ricky, Evan, and Lucy
Spiegel. Son of the late Fannie (nee Waxman)
and Ned Spiegel and brother to the late Ar-
lene (“Civia”) Yellin. Uncle to Dr. Joel Yellin,
late Dr. Lawrence Yellin, and late Nancy Yel-
lin, and countless friends and family mem-
bers whose lives he touched. Due to the cur-
rent health crisis, funeral services and Shiva
will be conducted privately. In his memory,
his family encourages friends and family to

gers University Yellin Family Biomedical Col-

Philip J. Tannenbaum of Audubon, PA passed
away peacefully on January 26, 2021. He was
91. Philip was extremely intelligent and ac-
complished, and his love of learning endured
throughout his lifetime. After serving as a
medic during the Korean War, Philip earned
his undergraduate degree from the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania with a triple major. He
then continued his education and earned his
medical degree from the University of
Pennsylvania. For most of his career, he
worked for Smithkline Pharmaceuticals and
rose to become SeniorVice President and Dir-
ector of US Medical Affairs. In his fifties, he
left Smithkline and attended law school at Vil-
lanova University. He used his legal degree to
serve the community by donating his time at
Delaware County Community Legal
Services.Family was very important to Philip.

He was the son of immigrant parents and the
oldest of three children. Philip was a devoted
father, a loving grandfather and adoring
great-grandfather. He was an avid tennis
player, passionate about politics and loved to
travel and read. Husband of the late Mar-
garet Tannenbaum, he will be missed by his
children Randi Tannenbaum (Wayne Morse),
Dr. Alan Tannenbaum (Anna May), Dr. Amy
Fitzsimmons (Mike), and Dr. David Tannen-
baum, as well as his grandchildren Caitlin, Al-
exandra, Lauren (Will), Jason, Jordan, Elliot
(Sam), Ian, Emma, Sophie, Jacob, Sydney,
Katharine, Talia, and Max, great-grandchil-
dren Riley and Jolene and sisters Lynne
(Lou) Russo and the late Edda Gruber. Con-

TAUB Joy Taub, 87, (nee Fromberg), formerly of
Wallingford, PA and Philadelphia, passed
away from COVID-19 on Jan 23, 2021.

Daughter of the late Eva and Harry Fromberg.

Predeceased by her beloved husband of 63
years, Burton Taub. She had many interests
in life including real estate, accounting, and
sports. She is survived by Jeff (Amy), Har-
ilyn (William) Kaplan, and Steven (Ellen) and
5 grandchildren, Casey (Matt) Kaminski and
