RAPHAEL-SACKS NATHANSON
Bennett Nathanson died on January 18, 2018
at the age of 92 at Lankenau Medical Center,
where he was a dedicated and enthusiastic
volunteer for 22 years. Ben was a loving hus-
band to Ruth Leventhal Nathanson for 23
years, and the dearest father, grandfather,
and great grandfather. Ben enlisted in the
army at the age of 17, and following the war,
graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in
Mechanical Engineering. In 1952 Ben mar-
ried Joy Maker, an educator and loving moth-
er of their two children, Wendy and Gilbert,
which led to four grandchildren and one great
grandchild. Working in the chemical in-
dustry, Ben established a reputation as a
champion of creativity and innovation, and at
Celanese, he led the research team with mot-
tos such "I am the I in innovation" and "Pro-
pose, Don't Suppose”. Upon his retirement,
Celanese established the “Ben Nathanson In-
novation Award" given yearly to an aspiring
innovator. Ben also worked at United Mer-
chants, Monsanto, and Allied Chemical and
was awarded a patent for developing a high
temperature plastic for circuit boards. After
Joy's untimely passing, Ben again found a
soulmate in Ruth Leventhal, whom he mar-
ried in 1994 and with whom he spent many
treasured years, traveling, growing, and
learning, all the while enjoying their home in
Florida, their apartment in Bala Cynwyd, and
summer home in Lenox, MA. Ben was a
huge hearted man, who welcomed Ruth's
family into his life - daughters Sue and Mar-
gie, son Ira and their nine children and eight
grandchildren. Ben was also a generous con-
tributor to many humanitarian causes and a
dedicated follower of his Jewish faith, which
helped fill his life. Ben was known for his un-
bridled optimism, kindness, a sweet disposi-
tion, his humor and easy laughter, and his
generosity to family and numerous political
organizations in which he believed. Active
and curious throughout his life, Ben never
tired of reading history books and writing let-
ters to authors, senators and presidents. Ben
also pursued his love of drawing, continuing
art lessons up until last month. He loved to
be engaged and make his life count each and
every day. The family remembers Ben for his
enormous generosity and good humor and
unbounded kindness, not just to his family
but to everyone he would meet. It was his
gift to bring joyful moments to all who knew
him at every occasion. Ben exemplified the
spirit of giving, loving, and learning taught in
the Talmud, which he studied faithfully.
While friends and family will miss Ben, his
life and the way he lived it will be an example
to all who knew him. Those wishing to re-
member Ben through donations are encour-
aged to contribute to two of Ben's favorites
among many causes: The American Tech-
nion Society (ATS.org) or the Israel Guide
Dog Center for the Blind, Israelguidedog.org

If you were to look up Gerry Rudman’s name
in the dictionary, you would see the follow-
ing definitions: strong, yet so very loving,
sweet confidence with a takes no prisoners
attitude and doing for others before doing for
herself. Gerry was born in Philadelphia in
1933. She would have been 85 this April 8th.
Until she was a teenager she lived with her 2
younger sisters, Mona Brassloff and Kay Kar-
mon, above her father’s pharmacy. She was a
second mother to Kay and Mona, as her par-
ents worked 6 days a week in the store be-
low. As a teenager, Gerry lived near her cous-
ins and extended family when they moved
from the house above the pharmacy. She
learned Yiddish, so she could converse with
her grandparents who came to Philadelphia
from Russia, because she wanted a relation-
ship with them. Gerry met her husband Steve
Rudman at Temple University. She gradu-
ated with her Bachelors degree the same day
Steve got his law degree. Gerry studied edu-
cation and loved teaching. They married in
1956 and had Dana (Keller) in 1961 and Ey-
dieRudman in 1963. Gerry was always a
“community volunteer”. After retiring from
teaching, she assumed many roles in her
synagogue Adath Jeshurun (AJ). At 76, she
started a catering business at AJ with other
members. It was very well received and the
congregants love it. Gerry was also a docent
at the National Museum of American Jewish
History in Philadelphia. Gerry had many pas-
sions in her life. Adath Jeshurun Synagogue
was one of them, but her number one pas-
sion was her family. During these last few
months, after suffering a stroke on Septem-
ber 12th, Gerry showed her daughters and
her 4 beautiful granddaughters (Emily and
Sophie Levin, Lilly and Sasha Keller) how to
be strong, no matter what lies in the path
ahead. This is a life lesson that they will carry
with them always. Gerry was and always will
be her daughters and granddaughters’
biggest role model. She was force in their
lives. Gerry passed away on February 5th
after complications from a stroke. Her hus-
band Stephen D. Rudman predeceased her.
Gerry is survived by her daughters Dana
Keller (Jonathan) and Eydie Rudman
(Howard Levin) and 4 granddaughters, Lilly
and Sasha Keller and Emily and Sophie Levin.
She is also survived by her 2 sisters Kay Kar-
mon (Robert) and Mona Brassloff (Michael)
and many nieces and nephews. Donations in
Gerry’s memory can be made to Adath Je-
shurun Synagogue or the National Museum
of American Jewish History in Philadelphia.
RICHMAN Evelyn Denenberg Richman passed away
peacefully from complications of a stroke on
January 17, 2018, at the age of 87. She was
predeceased by her parents, Jack and Rose
Denenberg; her brother, Simon Denenberg;
and her beloved husband, Sandy Richman.
She is survived by her son, Barry (Deborah)
and daughter, Jeanne (Carol-Ann). She was
Bubbie Bubbles to Sarah and Jacob. Evelyn's
passions were her family, the Phillies (she
threw out a first pitch on Susan Komen Day),
The Walk for the Cure (to which she gave
countless volunteer hours), and her Phil-
adelphia High School for Girls June 1948
class. She asked that her remains be donated
to medical science, which was done through
the Humanity Gifts Registry of Philadelphia.
In memory of Evelyn's life, please consider a
