FOX DEATH NOTICES
FOX Leon H. Fox, Jr., 85, of Lafayette Hill, PA
passed away on January 22, 2018. Born in
Norristown, he is survived by his wife of al-
most 59 years, Lois Fox, loving father of his
children Marlene (Joel Goldwein), Craig
(Mary), Jeffrey (Song) as well as grandchil-
dren, Marc (Kimberly), Robert, Eric, Oliver,
Hannah, Jennifer and Stephen and great
grandchild, Juliana. Mr. Fox graduated Nor-
ristown High School in 1949, graduated La-
fayette College in 1953, Magna Cum Laude
with honors in Government and was elected
to Phi Beta Kappa Society, the nation’s old-
est academic society. He received his law de-
gree from the University of Pennsylvania
School of Law in 1956 where he was asked
to be a member of the University of
Pennsylvania Law Review. An accomplished
attorney with extensive trial experience, Mr.

Fox, who spent his entire legal career with
the Norristown firm of Fox and Fox, success-
fully tried cases in Courts at all levels. He was
honored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association,
the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and by
the Montgomery Bar Association in recogni-
tion of his 50 th year of admission to the Bar
and in appreciation of the faithful and con-
tinuance devotion to the Montgomery Bar As-
sociation and the Courts of Montgomery
County. Mr. Fox, who resided in Mont-
gomery County all of his life, was an avid
sports fan. He coached Little League base-
ball and Biddy basketball and participated for
many years in the Montgomery County Seni-
or Games and the Pennsylvania Senior
Games in many events involving basketball
and has won numerous gold and silver
medals. Until last recently, Leon was the
starting pitcher in the annual Montgomery
Bar Association softball game, and loved
shooting “hoops” with his children and
grandchildren. There was nothing he liked
more than spending time with his extended
family, particularly on vacations and espe-
cially at the NCAA Final Four basketball tour-
naments. Contributions in his memory can be

FREEMAN Lenora Freeman (nee Hoffman), age 90, died
on January 31, 2018. Wife of the late Hal
Freeman; mother of Lee (Suzanne) Freeman,
Brian Freeman and the late Rebecca Freeman;
sister of Mark (Barbara) Hoffman; grand-
mother of Eddie (Tim), Gabe (Keri), Lon
(Ally), Kathy (Jim), Bob (Eva) and Elysha
(Austin); and great-grandmother of Zack,
Josh, Livy, Lex, Daniel, James and Aidan.

GABEL GARBER
Ruth Gabel (nee Israel) Age 85, February 7,
2018, of Jenkintown, PA. Beloved wife of the
late Ivan H. Gabel, loving mother of Joanne
(Chris) Hamilton, Bruce (Susan) Gabel, and
Barbara (Steven) Sklar. She is also survived
by her brother George (Marion) Israel, Jr., 16
cherished grandchildren and 18 great grand-
children. She was predeceased by her sister,
Dr. Jean Brodey. Relatives and friends were
invited to services Friday, February 9, 2018,
11:00 AM, Joseph Levine and Sons Memori-

GARBER Barbara Garber (Kranich), 87 wife of the late
Robert D. Garber of King of Prussia, PA and
Delray Beach, FL died suddenly Tuesday,
January 30, 2018 at Delray Medical Center
surrounded by her three loving daughters.

Born in Lancaster, PA, she was the daughter
of the late Philip Kranich and Rose Judge
(Mittell). Barbara grew up in Worcester, MA,
and at the age of 17 attended the University
of Massachusetts graduating with honors.

Barbara met Bob on a blind date on
Valentine’s Day in 1948. They were married
in 1951 until his death in 2015. They had
three daughters and Barbara stayed home,
taking care of her family for many years. She
supported Bob in his career, which resulted
in several moves and job changes, taking the
family from Connecticut to Philadelphia to
Chicago and back to Philadelphia. As the girls
grew older, Barbara returned to work and
was a pioneer for women in the early com-
puter era, where she began as programmer
and advanced to a systems analyst. As a re-
cent cancer survivor, Barbara loved to exer-
cise, play bridge, knit, and was starting a new
hobby, learning to play canasta with her
friends in Florida. She and Bob traveled
travel the world together, but their favorite
place to visit was Israel. Barbara’s pride and
joy was her family, and she is survived by her
three beloved daughters, Carol Steiner (Dr.

Rob), Cindy Garber (Robert Lopez-Cepero),
and Nancy Braitman (Arthur); six adoring
grandchildren, Katie Steiner Rotenberg (Dr.

Shaun), Jeffrey Steiner, Allison Rosen
(Jeremy), Dr. Melissa Cradic (Dr. Rob Hom-
sher), Gregory Braitman, Rachel Braitman,
three cherished great grandchildren, Alexis
and Aron Rotenberg and Zachary Rosen; and
sister-in-law Irene Bernstein, and many dear
cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. Con-

Jay Allen Garber, age 78, of Cherry Hill, NJ,
died January 20, 2018. Adored and beloved
husband of Anita (nee Berkowitz) for 56
years. Jay graduated Overbrook High School
in Wynnefield and the Philadelphia College of
Pharmacy and Sciences. He was a devoted
father to Mitchell (Andrea), Scott (Kara) and
Melissa Landay (Ted). Brother of Sol Garber,
Herb Garber and the late Irwin Garber. Lov-
ing, generous grandfather (Zayd) to Seth, An-
drew, Kristin, Cameron and Kaden Garber
and Justin and Jonathan Landay. Jay raised
his family in Northeast Philadelphia, and
owned Ashton Pharmacy for over 30 years.

He was a dedicated pharmacist to the com-
munity, family and friends until he retired in
2008. He treated all his customers like family.

He was an active member and former Presid-
ent of Haym Salomon Lodge of Brith Sholom.

Jay was a member of Temple Beth Sholom in
Cherry Hill, NJ. After he retired he enjoyed
golfing and bowling and continued to give
medical advice. He will be missed by his lov-
ing family and friends. Contributions may be

GELBART Beatrice Gelbart (nee Dobronska), Holocaust

GREENBAUM GOLDSTEIN
Robert Arnold Goldstein was born December
1, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, the son of
Hy and Irene Goldstein, and the brother of
Sheila Goldstein. During his childhood, his
family moved to Chester, where he gradu-
ated from Chester High School before going
on to Brandeis University. He then went to
Thomas Jefferson Medical School, where he
graduated in 1966, before launching his ca-
reer in medicine, research, charity, and pub-
lic health advocacy. Following medical
school, he trained at Philadelphia General
Hospital before joining the Army and serving
as the Chief of the Pulmonary and Infectious
Disease Service at Tripler Army Medical Cen-
ter in Honolulu until 1972. He then moved to
the George Washington and VA Medical Cen-
ters where he joined the pulmonary disease
division in 1972-1978, until moving to the
National Institutes of Health in 1978. There,
he spent many years as the Director of the
Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Trans-
plantation in NIAID. He then joined the Juven-
ile Diabetes Research Foundation as Chief
Scientific Officer until 2011, when he moved
to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Founda-
tion-Canada as their Senior Scientific Ad-
visor. Along the way, he always continued
learning and signing up for more education.

While working in medicine, he obtained his
PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from
George Washington University, and his MBA
from the Stern School of Business at New
York University. He was a fellow of the Amer-
ican College of Physicians, the American Col-
lege of Chest Physicians, and the American
Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immuno-
logy. He is survived by his mother, Irene, his
sister, Sheila, and his wife, Barbara. He has
left a large and loving family including chil-
dren, stepchildren, their spouses, and grand-
children. They include Josh and Erica Gold-
stein, Mark and Summer Goldstein, and Josh
and Mark’s mother, Sandy; Julie and Steve
Lifton; Debbi Kauffman, and Julie and Debbi’s
mother, Bunnie; Stephanie Blumstein, Abby
Blank, and their mother, Barbara. His grand-
children and step grandchildren include Al-
exa and Lindsey Goldstein; Jason and Jenna
Lifton; Alexandra Lifton; and Chloe and Ellie
Blumstein. His great-grandchild is Nell Lifton.

GUTBEZAHL Jack Greenbaum, age 85, died on January 18,
2018. Beloved Husband of Lois (nee Altaker);
loving father of Cheryl (Barry) Lightfoot, Jody
(Bob) Mansbach, Robert (Amy Blum) and
Steven (Lauren); devoted grandfather of Kim-
berly, Allison, Jonathan, Jaden Sky, Jemma
Bleu, Ava, Zachary and Lilah. Jack was the
original "good guy." He could light up a room
with a story or joke, and make everyone feel
comfortable with his easygoing personality.

He always made his friends and family feel
special. He was an avid poker player, reader,
puzzle buff, Jeopardy king and Philadelphia
sports fan. Jack worked hard all his life to
provide for his family who he adored. He will
be so sadly missed. Contributions in his

RAPHAEL-SACKS GURLAND
Florence Gurland died at home on Friday,
January 12, 2018. Mrs. Gurland was born on
November 28, 1923 in Philadelphia to Sam
Shapiro and Anne Sacks Shapiro. She is sur-
vived by her son, Hale Gurland and his wife
Liz of New York; granddaughter Rose; and
sisters Ruth Kartman of Wyndmoor and Eth-
el Singer of Fort Lee. Mrs. Gurland's hus-
band Mel Gurland predeceased her in 1980.

She studied at University of the Arts in Phil-
adelphia during World War II. She worked at
the USO in Philadelphia, drawing portraits of
servicemen during the war. Mrs. Gurland and
Captain Mel Gurland were married during the
war. She earned her Master's Degree at New
York University in art education where she
taught art for over 25 years. She studied jew-
elry making and became a prolific jeweler.

She was philanthropic, contributing to the
United Jewish Appeal, the University Settle-
ment House and many other organizations. A
memorial service will be planned in the near
future. GUTBEZAHL
Eleanor Gutbezahl (nee Shewitz) January
30, 2018; of Langhorne; beloved wife of the
late Boris; loving mother of Cary Gutbezahl
(Rachel) and Eric Gutbezahl; cherished
grandmother of Adam, David, Hunter, Max
and Caroline. Relatives and friends were in-
vited to services Thursday, 9:30am, Congreg-
