DEATH NOTICES
SOLOMON SHUMAN
Allan Shuman, three weeks shy of his 79th
birthday, passed away peacefully on Novem-
ber 21, 2018, surrounded by those he loved
so much. He fought the good fight against
lung cancer, and survived years longer than
expected -- as with most things in his life, far
surpassing ordinary human expectation.

Everyone who knew Allan was inspired by his
passion for living life to the fullest. House
painter, entrepreneur, hippie, partier, world-
traveler, thinker and debater, Allan was com-
pletely self-taught in many and varied fields
of life. He could play music spontaneously by
ear on various instruments, particularly the
harmonica he wore at all times around his
neck. Allan never ceased learning, continu-
ally becoming an authority on new, diverse
topics. He needed few creature comforts, de-
voting his time and resources to his family,
his friends and to volunteering for causes
dear to his heart, including the Red Cross, Is-
raeli Army, American Cancer Society and Ab-
ramson Cancer Center. Most importantly, Al-
lan, the son of the late Cy and Ruth Shuman,
was a deeply dedicated father to his two
daughters Beth and Mindee; father-in-law to
Steve Ballentine and the late Howard Segal;
grandfather to Ryan and Kelly Ballentine,
Shanie and Phil LaRocca, Matt and Lindsay
Segal, Remi Segal and Samantha Segal;
great-grandfather to Sloane Segal; brother to
Robert Shuman and the late Arlene Glass
Timmons; best friend to Alexa Muhlig; adop-
ted grandfather to Demi, Ashton, and Quentin
Muhlig; and devoted Thursday Club member.

In addition, Allan profoundly touched the
lives of many across multiple generations --
too many to possibly name here. Donations
in Allan's name can be made to The Beam of
Life Campaign Fund at the Abramson Cancer
Center: https://giving.apps.upenn.edu.
