GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S RAPHAEL-SACKS MARKUS Our beloved Grampa, Harold E. Levine, was a man full of dignity and integrity, a real class act. He served in the US Army in West Point during World War II and was deeply involved in supporting the State of Israel and helping Soviet Jewry. Along with his wife, Phillis, he gave of himself not just financially, but even at personal risk, smuggling items in to the USSR for the Jewish communities there and serving in several voluntary programs in the IDF. My Grampa lived life to the fullest, dis- cerned the important things in life early on and made sure never to lose that focus. He supported his family and his grandchildren in every way he could and took personal pride in their achievements. Grampa had such presence when he entered a room, a com- pletely disarming manner. He would charm anyone within minutes of meeting them. Grampa taught his family and those who knew him the value of patience and of really respecting one another, the importance of travel and openness to new experiences, and how to keep learning. At age 96, the night after Chanukah, Grampa passed away. The light he brought into the world still shines brightly through his loving wife of 67 years, his 2 children, 9 grandchildren, 13 great- grandchildren, and everyone else who knew and loved him. He fought the good fight against lung cancer, and survived years longer than expected -- as with most things in his life, far surpassing ordinary human expectation. Everyone who knew Allan was inspired by his passion for living life to the fullest. House painter, entrepreneur, hippie, partier, world- traveler, thinker and debater, Allan was com- pletely self-taught in many and varied fields of life. He could play music spontaneously by ear on various instruments, particularly the harmonica he wore at all times around his neck. Allan never ceased learning, continu- ally becoming an authority on new, diverse topics. He needed few creature comforts, de- voting his time and resources to his family, his friends and to volunteering for causes dear to his heart, including the Red Cross, Is- raeli Army, American Cancer Society and Ab- ramson Cancer Center. Most importantly, Al- lan, the son of the late Cy and Ruth Shuman, was a deeply dedicated father to his two daughters Beth and Mindee; father-in-law to Steve Ballentine and the late Howard Segal; grandfather to Ryan and Kelly Ballentine, Shanie and Phil LaRocca, Matt and Lindsay Segal, Remi Segal and Samantha Segal; great-grandfather to Sloane Segal; brother to Robert Shuman and the late Arlene Glass Timmons; best friend to Alexa Muhlig; adop- ted grandfather to Demi, Ashton, and Quentin Muhlig; and devoted Thursday Club member. In addition, Allan profoundly touched the lives of many across multiple generations -- too many to possibly name here.
