Florence (Pfeffer) Lyons, age 93, died on
December 7, 2016. Wife of the late Hyman A.

Lyons, sister of the late Milton Pfeffer, loving
mother of Martha (Terry) Klebes, Michael
(Karen) Lyons and Phyllis (Howard) Turtle.

Proud grandmother of Michelle, Casey, Dorie,
Allyson, Maddie and Hannah. Adoring great-
grandmother of Emma, Elisa, Sam, Gavin,
Mollie, Josh and Mickey. Florence earned
her nursing degree from Mt. Sinai Hospital in
1945, and retired from the Pennsbury School
District ,where she was a school nurse until
she retired in 1982. She joined the Army
nurses corps during WWII serving on a hos-
pital ship where she met her husband, Hy, a
wounded soldier. She was an active mem-
ber of the National Organization of Women
and Project MEDS. Contributions in her

MARCOVITZ Morton W. Marcovitz, 89, Philadelphia native,
retired electrical engineer and proud father
passed away of natural causes in his sleep
the evening of November 13, 2016, in Thou-
sand Oaks, CA. Mort’s wife Betty prede-
ceased him in 2009. They were married 59
years, until Betty’s death. Mort is survived by
his four children, Marcie, Nancy Helt (wife of
Robert), Michael (wife Pamela) and Ruth
Adler (wife of Michael) and six grandchildren.

Mort was born on September 20, 1927, in
Philadelphia, PA. He graduated from West
Philadelphia High School in 1945. He re-
ceived an undergraduate degree in electrical
engineering from Drexel University in 1951.

The University of Pennsylvania awarded him
a M.S. in 1957 also in electrical engineering.

Mort proudly served in the U.S. Navy from
1945 to 1947. He spent most of his career as
an electrical engineer with the
Burroughs/Unisys Corporation and Litton In-
dustries. Mort was on the team that worked
on the innovative Burroughs check sorting
machine and was an engineering plant man-
ager at the Burroughs Plymouth, MI plant.

During his career the Marcovitz family lived
Drexel Hill, PA, Detroit, MI, Morristown, NJ,
Farmington Hills, MI and Wayne, PA. In 1994
Mort and Betty retired to Camarillo, CA. The
burial was Wednesday, November 16, 2016,
at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Ca-
marillo, CA next to his beloved wife.

MINTCHINE Irene Mintchine, a ballet dancer and teacher,
died December 20, 2016 at the age of 88.

versity of Pennsylvania in 1942. He was an
electrical engineer for General Electric 1942-

his father), makers of static eliminators, from
1947 until he retired and sold the company in

formerly of Philadelphia. He is survived by
his loving wife Janet (nee Kittay), Sons Brian
(Sharon) and Mark (Julie), 3 grandsons, a
granddaughter and three great-grand sons.

Services were held Tuesday, November 29,
2016. Irene Braun Teller,Feb.20,1919-Dec.12,2016
was the ultimate survivor, who felt deep pride
and joy in her family. She was a talented
seamstress and cook, even as her eyesight
declined later in life. She laughed with her
whole body, and had a song in her heart,
despite her hardships and losses. She was
feisty throughout each day of her life, even in
the final days, and fought hard to have the
long life she felt she deserved. Born in Tisa
Shalomon in Hungary, as the youngest of six
children, she was the only member of her
family to survive the Holocaust in Europe.

She married Zoltan Teller in 1946. They fled
from Hungary to a Displaced Persons Camp
in Germany, where their daughter Judy was
born in 1947, before immigrating to New
York in 1949. In New York, Irene and Zoltan
built their American Dream. Their son Lenny
was born in 1952. They opened a dry clean-
ing store followed by a men's clothing store.

They worked hand-in-hand throughout their
lives, enduring many hard years, before joy-
fully retiring to Florida. She is survived by her
children Judy Rohtbart and Lenny Teller,
their spouses Meyer Rohtbart and Leah Tell-
er, and was the beloved Bubby to seven
grandchildren and twenty great-grandchil-

WEISS Harold Weiss, age 92, passed away peace-
fully on Friday, December 2, at his Margate
residence. He was born in Philadelphia on
February 23, 1924, the son of Mendel and
Sylvia (Chirlin) Weiss. After graduating
South Philadelphia High School, he enlisted
in the U.S. Air Army Corps, the predecessor
to the Air Force. He was very proud of his
service in World War II, where he was trained
as an airplane mechanic and served on a
Navy ship in the Pacific Ocean when the
atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. Har-
old graduated from Temple University and
became a CPA. He soon left the accounting
profession, investing in several businesses
and eventually developing a local shopping
center. Outside of his family, who he was ex-
tremely devoted to, Harold’s lifelong passion
was flying. He was an instrument rated air-
plane pilot, and his greatest thrills were fly-
ing his single engine plane over the Rocky
Mountains and island hopping in the Carib-
bean. He was the author of a biography of the
immigrant experience (And The Streets Were
Paved With Gold), a proud Mensa member
and painter. He is survived by two sons,
Richard (Portia) of Newport Beach, and Mi-
chael of Linwood, and his sister Elaine Soko-
loff of Elkins Park. Also surviving are his
grandchildren: Sean, Sarah (Maor), Reming-
ton and Madison; two great-grandchildren:
Mia and Joshua; and many loving nieces and
nephews. He was preceded in death by his
sister Shirley Coff, brother Alvin (Buddy)
Weiss, and grandson Joshua Weiss. He was
deeply loved and will be sorely missed. Con-

MEMORIALS Dr. H. Michael Zal, age 75, died on Decem-
ber 16, 2016. He was a Psychiatrist for 43
years, he was a Clinical Professor at PCOM,
and fellow of the American College of Osteo-
pathic Neurology and Psychiatry and a distin-
guished life fellow of the American Psychiat-
ric Association. He was president of the
Alumni Association at Central High School
210 Class. He received many awards, includ-
ing 4 Chaplin Leader of Legion awards. Win-
ner of the 1998 Eric W. Martin memorial
award presented by the American Writers As-
sociation. He was Chief of Staff at Phil-
adelphia Psychiatric Institute. He got the
Francis Larsin Memorial Award for excel-
lence in medical writing by the American
Medical Writers Association. He had his own
cable TV show for 4 years called, Mental
Notes with Dr. Michael Zal, which he re-
ceived 2 awards for excellence. He wrote
over 100 articles, chapters in books, and lec-
tures. He was editor of The POMA Journal
and wrote 5 books, his last one is entitled "A
Psychiatrist Guide to Successful Retirement
and Aging; Coping with Change". Beloved
husband of Alice (nee Sheflin); loving father
of Michelle (Steven) Dubin and Frederick Zal;
dear brother of Joann (Richard) Cohen; and
adored grandfather of Daniel and Rebecca.

ZARKIN Jan Alan Zarkin 73, of Philadelphia, originally
from Harrisburg, died of complications of
ALS, at his home, Thursday, December 1,
2016, surrounded by friends and family. Jan
was the owner for 25 years, of Rembrandt’s
Restaurant in Fairmount and prior to that had
a long career as a systems analyst at PECO.

He served in the Army, graduated from Not-
tingham Prep School in Harrisburg and PMC
- Pennsylvania Military College. He is sur-
vived by his wife of 26 years, Joann, brother
Jere (Viki), brother in-law Joel Frezel (Janice
Frezel), and nieces and nephews: Dell and
