JOSEPH LEVINE and SONS
www.levinefuneral.com Morris V. Shelanski, M.D., called “Doc” by
many, passed away peacefully at home in
Wynnewood, PA, the morning of 23 July
2020. He lived a long and fruitful life and he
leaves us one month shy of 99 years of age.
The son of Lithuanian immigrants, Dr.
Shelanski grew up poor in South Phil-
adelphia with a childhood that nurtured his
exceptional intellect and intense curiosity. He
earned an academic scholarship to Harvard
College, then later his M.D. and Master Sur-
geon degrees from McGill University. He
began his professional career as a surgeon at
Philadelphia General Hospital, where he met,
and later married the love of his life, Rita, a
registered nurse. They were married for 65
years. Dr. Shelanski served in the United
States Naval Reserve as a doctor doing spe-
cial research in chemical warfare protection,
for both the Army and Navy, and promoted to
Lieutenant Commander. After the Navy he
worked with his brother, Herman, at Industri-
al Toxicology Laboratories in Philadelphia,
and both were among the nation’s first toxic-
ologists. Together they invented Povidone-
Iodine, commonly known as Betadine, an iod-
ine-based anti-bacterial liquid, in use now
since 1953 in hospitals and clinic s
throughout the world as a pre- and post-sur-
gical wash. This has helped save millions of
lives. He started his own company, Product
Investigations, Inc., testing many chemicals,

cial marketplace. While at Harvard, he took
coursework in archeology and ancient civiliz-
ations that kindled his passion for classical
art and antiquities. Dr. Shelanski amassed a
much-admired collection over 40 years and
was well known at antique stores from Phil-
adelphia to Boston. His passion for collect-
ing was tempered only by Rita, and he often
had one of his children sneak the latest paint-
ing or Chinese vase into a closet in the
house, lest he be caught and have to face her
wrath. He was a true Renaissance man in
terms of his talent for calligraphy, his mul-
tiple patents for “ahead-of-their-time” tech-
nical medical devices, his expertise and un-

stereo equipment. Above all else, Morris
Shelanski was a deeply kind and generous
man who loved his large family. Nothing
made him happier than to have them all to-
gether for Shabbat dinners, where he would
hold court afterwards for hours telling jokes
and hilarious stories. He leaves his much-ad-
ored wife Rita, his five children, Joseph
(Sharon), Herman (Patty), Samuel, Anne
(John Dougherty) and Stephan. His legacy
also includes 12 beloved grandchildren and
two great-grandchildren in a long, happy life

SOLOMON SILVERMAN
Claire Mae Silverman (nee Rosen), 91, of
Boca Raton, Fl and Margate, NJ, passed away
on July 30, 2020 of complications of the
COVID-19 virus. Born on January 8, 1929 in
Philadelphia, she was raised in Wynnefield,
where she met her beloved husband Richard
Silverman. They were married at Har Zion
Synagogue in 1947 and were active mem-
bers for years thereafter. Together they built
the Richard Automotive Group consisting of
seven franchises in four locations in the
western suburbs of Philadelphia. They raised
three wonderful, loving and successful chil-
dren, Cindy, Leslee and Scott. Claire Mae
reveled in their accomplishments and would
not necessarily wait to be asked before brag-
ging. Later in life, she began a new career as
a realtor in Margate, NJ working with Fox and
Lazo (Northfield) and Prudential Fox. There
she enjoyed her many interactions with her
clients, learning their individual stories and
helping to fulfill their real estate needs. Claire
Mae and Richie always had a deep connec-
tion to their Jewish heritage and were active
in American Jewish Congress and many syn-
agogue committees through the years. They
instilled this commitment in their children,
who all spent many summers at Camp
Ramah in the Poconos, and both daughters
taught Hebrew school. This transcended to
her grandchildren, who are all raised with
deep connections to their synagogues and
the Jewish tradition. Everyone who knew
Claire Mae will remember her with a smile
and a story. They will all comment humor-
ously of Claire’s bouffant hairdo, that never
changed. She loved to sit and talk and tell
tales of her travels around the globe, busi-
ness experiences and, of course, her family.
She always enjoyed a party and was the joy-
ous hostess of many large family gatherings
through the years. She was robust and
strong willed, having survived two different
episodes of cancer, winning the battles with
her positive attitude. She is survived by her
siblings, Barbara (Bobbie) Segall and Richard
Rosen (Henrietta): her children, Cindy Imber
(Paul), Leslee Tabas (Richard), Scott Silver-
man: her grandchildren, Jessica Imber, Erica
Imber, Aaron Imber, Charles Tabas, Richard
Silverman , Remick Silverman; her great
grandson, Austin Imber; and many dear and
beloved nie ces and nephews. Private
graveside service will be held for the family.

STEERMAN Doris Steerman died on July 22, 2020, two
months shy of her 90th birthday. Doris was
the oldest and last surviving of Milton and
Reba Falkenstein’s four children and the sis-
ter of Helen Dee, Ruth Betty Rosenfeld, and
Sheldon Falkenstein. Doris was married to
William for 60 years, raising three daughters,
Carol Segal (Larry), Amy (Mary Ann Stover)
and Barbara Vigderman. Doris was a proud
and devoted grandmother to Abby, Harry,
Gabe, Annie Rose, Aliza and Nate. A gradu-
ate of the University of Pennsylvania, Doris
was a reading specialist in the Philadelphia
school system for approximately 20 years.
Her friends and family considered Doris re-
fined, stylish, funny, intellectually curious,
and a person with strong opinions and wis-
dom. Doris also brought decency, appreci-
ation and generosity in all of her relation-
ships. In addition to her love of reading, Dor-
is enjoyed playing bridge, going to the Phil-
adelphia Orchestra and local theatres, and
shopping with her daughters and grand-
daughters. She was fortunate to have
traveled the world with her husband Bill, and
in her later years enjoyed summers in Mar-
gate and winters in Boca Raton. Doris was
enormously gratified by the accomplish-
ments and growth of her grandchildren, see-
ing five graduate from college and all have a
Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Doris clearly left her
mark. Her family will sorely miss her, always
remember her, always love her, and always
be grateful for the lessons she taught and the
example she set. Contributions in her
