his family. Earl is survived by his son Eric,
daughter-in-law Marisa, brother Harvey,
grandchildren Joshua, Naomi and Sonia, and
wife Nancy Cetlin. He is predeceased by his

born in Philadelphia on October 29, 1939 to
Harry and Florence Fleegler. He graduated
from Franklin and Marshall College in 1961
with a degree in Biology and then attended
medical school at Jefferson Medical College,
graduating in 1965. He trained in general
surgery at Temple University and then pur-
sued a fellowship in plastic surgery at Al-

in hand surgery in Arizona. He practiced his
profession in Cleveland, OH from 1973 to
1995 initially in private practice and then at
the Cleveland Clinic, where he was the divi-

Kathy moved to Ambler, PA where he contin-

of the Department of Surgery at Rutgers Uni-
versity and the Newark VA. He was a world-
renowned surgeon with an unparalleled ex-
perience in the treatment of hand tumors and
complex hand surgery. During his career he
edited the definitive book “Tumors of the
Hand and Upper Limb” and wrote several
journal articles and book chapters on a vari-
ety of topics in hand surgery. He was also
recognized as a patient teacher of several
generations of plastic surgery residents. He
retired in 2014. Early was a devoted father,
husband and grandfather who enjoyed his
life-long passion of fly fishing – one sparked
by a course given to him by Kathy. He spent
a lifetime designing and tying his own flies,
building bamboo fly rods, traveling around
the country and the world on fishing expedi-
tions, painting his catches in vibrant water-
colors, and writing articles about the subject
for fishing magazines. He was a naturalist
who loved spending time outdoors. He was
an observant Jew who delighted in learning
about Jewish history and the Kabbalah. In his
retirement, Earl greatly enjoyed spending
time with his three beloved grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by his friends, fam-
ily, and all who knew him. Donations and
condolences may be made in Earl’s memory
to either the Catskill Flyfishing Center & Mu-
seum or Project Healing Waters FlyFishing.

www.JewishExponent.com Irene Matson Goldstein was born September
28, 1920, in Claghorn, PA, the daughter of
John and Mathilda Mattson and the sister of
Ben and Signey. During her childhood, the
family moved to West Virginia where John
worked as a coal miner. She later moved to
New York during the Great Depression to
work as a maid. One day, while shopping for
the family that she worked for, she met a
young man working in the grocery store
named Hyman Goldstein. The two married in
June 1941, and moved in with his parents.

They had two children, Bob (who passed
away in 2018) and Sheila. They moved to
Chester, PA, and with Hy’s brothers opened
L&H Sporting Goods (named for Lou and
Hy). After raising their children in Chester,
they moved to Broomall. Following retire-
ment, they moved to Delaware, and in 2003,
her daughter Sheila moved up from Virginia
to be with them in Wilmington. Hy passed
away in 2004, just shy of his 91 st birthday.

Since then, Irene and Sheila have lived to-
gether in Wilmington. Overall, Irene enjoyed a
full and wonderful life. Her loves included
gardening, animals, and family. As a garden-
er, she would drive her tractor around the
property in Broomall and cut down trees with
her chainsaw. In Wilmington, she managed a
large flower garden, continued to wield her
chainsaw to trim trees, composted, and
raised beautiful flowers. She also loved anim-
als. Over her life she has raised numerous
cats and dogs, and at the time of her passing
leaves behind two wonderful cats and three
dogs. She lived independently with her
daughter, and gardened until the end. She
was looking forward to her 100 th birthday,
scheduled in 2020. She is survived by her
daughter Sheila, and has left a large and lov-
ing family including children, grandchildren,
great-grandchildren, and great-great grand-
children. These include: Josh and Erica Gold-
stein and their daughters Alexa and Lindsey;
Mark and Summer Goldstein; Josh and
Mark’s mother Sandy; Julie and Steve Lifton,
their daughter Alexandra, their son Jason, his
wife Jenna and their daughter Nell; Debbi
Kauffman; Julie and Debbi’s mother Bunnie
and her husband Arnie; Stephanie Blumstein,
her daughters Chloe and Ellie, Abby Blank,
and Stephanie and Abby’s mother Barbara;
Vicki Fariss; and Marlene and Joelle Under-
wood. Contributions in her memory may be
made to the Parkinson’s Association.

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.

The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.

INGERMAN DEATH NOTICES
INGERMAN Ira M. Ingerman, age 81, of Boca Raton, FL
and Philadelphia, passed away peacefully at
his home in Philadelphia on August 4th,
2019, after a battle with cancer of the pan-
creas and lung. A native of Philadelphia, Ira
grew up in Wynnefield and attended Over-
brook High School. He graduated from
Temple University in 1959 with a degree in
accounting and went on to practice as a CPA
with Bernstein & Salkind until he formed a
business partnership with Stanley Ginsburg
in 1969. Through this relationship, Ira served
as President of Arrow Display Company and
Sparks as well as Magic Marker Corporation.

Later in his career, he was involved in real es-
tate development and management through
their company, Equivest Develop-ment Inc.

Although quite successful professionally,
Ira's greatest accomplishment was as a hus-
band, father and grandfather to his large and
very close-knit family. Known to his 14
grandchildren as Poppop, he traveled
between Boston, New York and Philadelphia
frequently and hosted many gatherings so he
could spend time with the people that meant
the most to him. Ira was a longtime support-
er of Ben Gurion University of the Negev and
served on the Board as Treasurer for the
American Associates of Ben Gurion Uni-
versity and was a member of the Board of
Governors of the university. He and his wife
Eileen were benefactors of the Ginsburg-In-
german Overseas Student Program (OSP) for
the last 40 years with his partner Stanley
Ginsburg and his wife. This immersive study
abroad program brought students to Ben
Gurion University of the Negev to deepen
their knowledge and exposure to Israel and
its people while studying a variety of challen-
ging academic subjects. He also established
a separate endow-ment for scholarships for
Israeli students. Ira was also a major contrib-
utor to a number of other Jewish charities,
namely Jewish Federation of Greater Phil-
adelphia as well as a longtime supporter of
other educational and health care related
causes. His desire to give back will continue
through the programs he has so generously
established. Ira is survived by his wife of 42
years, Eileen Ingerman (nee Gross), his chil-
dren Randi Ingerman (husband Richard Clev-
eland), Cindy Ingerman Balick, Elliott Inger-
man (wife Linda Ingerman), Gregory Stein
(wife Brooke Stein) and Amy Wood (hus-
band Travis Wood); his 14 grand-children,
Michelle Cleveland, Matthew Balick (Nicole
Goroshovsky), Bryan Cleveland, Jack Balick,
Chase Balick, Max Ingerman, Jesse Inger-
man, Jonah Stein, Remi Ingerman, Dylan
Stein, Charlie Stein, Zachary Wood and Zoe
Wood. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests
donations be directed to: AABGU, P.O. Box
1128, Jenkintown, PA 19046, Checks should
be payable to AABGU and Ginsburg-Inger-
man Overseas Student Program should be
noted in the memo section. Alternatively,
donations can be called in to 215-884-4510.
