APFEL Fanchon Marks Apfel, progressive philan-
thropist and beloved wife, mother, grand-
mother and friend, died on July 31, 2017.

She was 84 years old. Born on June 2, 1933
in New York City, she graduated from Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania in 1954. While at
Penn, she met her future husband, Jerome B.

Apfel, who was a student at University of
Pennsylvania Law School. After marrying in
1955, they settled in Philadelphia and Fan-
chon worked as an occupational therapist be-
fore raising four children, Sarah Apfel of New
York City, David M. Apfel (b. May 19, 1962 d.

March 7, 2007), Matthew B. Apfel of Wood-
side, California, and Ira A. Apfel of Washing-
ton, D.C. Her husband died on October 16,
2006. She was the mother-in-law of Thomas
Nicholls, Jacqueline Reses and Gina Kim and
the grandmother of Sophie, Emilia, Isabel,
Charlotte and Owen. During World War II her
father, Dr. Harry Marks, was an Army doctor
stationed at Japanese-American internment
camps in California and Arkansas, and Fan-
chon grew up living just outside these facilit-
ies. Witnessing injustices at places like Tule
Lake helped develop Fanchon’s empathy for
the neediest and most vulnerable in society,
and she spent much of her life as a philan-
thropist, activist and staunch supporter of
many progressive causes as well as Beth
David Reform Congregation and the Uni-
versity of Pennsylvania. Contributions in her

practiced in both the Logan and Northeast
areas of Philadelphia for 53 years died on Ju-
ly 27, 2017. He was 94 years old. He retired
to Seattle Washington in 2003 following the
death of his beloved Dorothy. Father of Elise
(Sidney) Neimark of Palm Beach Gardens,
Florida and Dr. Mark (Linda) Bressler of Red-
mond, Washington. Grandfather of Kara
(Scott) Friedman of New York City, Matthew

Stephanie "Sandy" (nee Rudnick) Eglin Phil-
adelphia Business Woman and Philanthrop-
ist. Age 91, of Phila., PA passed with Peace
and Grace on August 13, 2017, surrounded
by loved ones at Thomas Jefferson Uni-
versity Hospital. Sandy was born and raised
in Philadelphia. After marrying Meyer Eglin,
she threw her energies into their many
travels and her love of the Arts. Sandy was a
very successful businesswoman. Following
Meyer Eglin's death in 1974, she oversaw
and controlled The Eglin Garages, a network
of real estate and parking enterprises in Phila.

Sandy loved the City and through her philan-
thropic efforts she was very generous to the
Arts and Sciences. In 1993, Sandy was
named individual Philanthropist of the Year
by the National Society of Fundraising Exec-
utives, and received the Humanitarian Award
from the American Cancer Society. In 1997,
the Philadelphia Museum of Art dedicated the
Stephanie and Meyer Eglin Gallery. Sandy
was an honorary member of the Museum's
Board of Trustees and one of its most de-
voted friends. Her leadership gift was instru-
mental in the creation of the Robert Mont-
gomery Scott Endowment Fund for Exhibi-
tions. Sandy provided for the Eglin Laser
Room, Meyer Eglin Infectious Disease Fel-
lowship, the Neurology Library Conference
Room and the H. Robert Cathcart Endow-
ment Fund for Nursing Excellence, all at
Pennsylvania Hospital. Her generosity has
encompassed Thomas Jefferson University
Hospital, Moss Rehabilitation Center, The
Wistar Institute, The Philadelphia Academy of
Music, The Mann Music Center (where she
founded the Meyer Eglin Memorial Concert),
The Philadelphia Orchestra (where she en-
dowed the Meyer Eglin Flute Chair). St. Chris-
topher's Hospital for Children, The Jewish
Federation and The Philadelphia Zoo. Sandy
loved animals. She was a devoted caretaker
to her precious Jake, a yellow-headed
amazon, who passed away a few years ago.

Sandy had a passion for cooking and baking,
sending care packages of homemade cakes
and soup to her family and friends. Preceded
in death by her husband, Meyer Eglin, her
parents, Anna and Paul Rudnick, her sister,
Helen Friel, and her niece, Joan D. Carroll.

Sandy is survived by her sister, Loretta Zei-
ger, her nephew, Paul Mazerski, and great
niece Kym Carroll. In addition to family,
Sandy is survived by longtime, loyal friend,
Donna Lombardi Slipakoff. The Family wishes
to thank Denis Sheils, Esq. for his trust and
dedication, her loyal companion and care-
taker Zoya Lebedinsky, Dr. Roger B. Daniels,
all attending physicians and nursing staff at
Jefferson Hospital and the Bayada Nursing
staff. Sandy loved life and a good laugh. She
was a loving and devoted sister, aunt and
friend. To know her, was to love her. She will
forever be in our hearts. Relatives and friends
were invited to graveside services Wed. Aug.
