GOLDSTEINS’ ROSENBERG’S
RAPHAEL-SACKS BERGER
Morton J. Berger, piano teacher, passed
away on February 25, 2017 at the age of 93.

As a young boy, he was very musically in-
clined and studied piano with Leo Ornstein,
the renowned pianist, composer and teacher.

As a teenager, he played a few live concerts
on the classical music station, WFLN in Phil-
adelphia. However, his love of teaching would
prevail and become his lifelong passion. Mort
taught piano and music theory at Combs Col-
lege of Music for approximately 25 years. He
was still teaching students until his final
days. A conservative estimate is that up-
wards of 1000 people have taken lessons
with Morton Berger. Mort was stationed in
Italy during World War II where he twice re-
ceived good conduct medals. It was in Italy
where he found his love of languages and
learned to speak Italian fluently. He also
spoke French, Spanish and Yiddish. After the
war, he met his soul mate, Sylvia Pinsky, on
the beach in Atlantic City. Theirs was an in-
credible love affair lasting 70 years, starting
with a marriage proposal on their second
date. He is also survived by 3 children, Bill,
Barry and Susan, 8 grandchildren and 2 great
grandchildren. Having a close family was
very important to him. He put a lot of effort
into making special family meals and enjoy-
ing vacations together. The true legacy of
Morton Berger is to inspire people through
teaching and learning. His motto was “ Fol-
low Your Dreams.” Many years ago, on their
first trip to Santo Domingo, they met a man
speaking Italian in the coffee shop. This led
to a friendship of 40 years. Angelo and Ros-
ario and their family are lifelong friends; the
kind of friends that become family. Mort and
Sylvia retired in Florida 20 years ago to en-
joy the warmer weather. They made many
new friends and he became captain of the
building where they lived. Nothing was too
much trouble for Mort. If someone needed
help, he didn’t hesitate. But even in retire-
ment, Mort never stopped teaching. He took
delight in teaching a kindergarten class their
first music lesson. It is so hard to say good-
bye to someone so kind, gentle, happy, help-
ful and dear. You will be missed by many.

One of his favorite sayings was…
“Happiness is the only thing
worthwhile in life.”
