DELLAVECCHIA, REILLY, SMITH & BOYD FUNERAL HOME, Inc. www.DellaFH.com Doreen Sue Davis (1954-2021), passed away on April 7, 2021 after a courageous and steadfast twenty-one year battle with meta- static breast cancer. She fought the disease with the same determination and tenacity that fueled her rise from a childhood of extreme poverty to the top of the legal profession. Doreen had no childhood interaction with the legal profession to serve as a role model in her hometown of Harvey’s Lake, a small town near Wilkes-Barre. Every achievement was her own. Doreen held leadership roles in top Philadelphia and New York law firms, ulti- mately being named among the top labor lawyers in the country. At the time illness forced her to retire, she was lead counsel in the largest litigation ever before the National Labor Relations Board. Doreen believed that her greatest accomplishment was her daugh- ter, Samantha Simmons. When Samantha was in elementary school, Doreen was elec- ted to be chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, the first working mother and only the second woman to serve. Doreen was equally proud of Samantha’s choice to become an attorney and her loving marriage to Jason Besecker. Doreen also survived by her husband of nearly thirty-two years, Robert Simmons, as well as numerous sib- lings, nieces, nephews and their progeny. She enjoyed the company of her many close friends and legal colleagues, who, along with her medical caregivers, provided support throughout her course of treatment. A live celebration will be held at a later date when safety will permit us to laugh and cry togeth- er. In the interim, raise a toast to her life with a glass of her favored white burgundy. Those who wish to remember her with a donation may do so to a charity of their own choosing or in her name to Women Against Abuse or The Breast Cancer Coalition. Vivianne (Billie) Horwitz, 91, of King of Prussia, PA, passed away peacefully in her home on February 19, 2021. She was born in Pottstown, PA on July 4, 1929 to Morris and Sally (Laber) Horwitz. She was predeceased by her sisters Geraldine Forman and Shirley Woolf. After graduating from high school, Bil- lie worked for the Philadelphia Board of Edu- cation, starting in the typing pool and work- ing her way up to Administrative Assistant for the Superintendent of Schools. After retiring from the Board of Education, Billie went to work for PRIME, a nonprofit philanthropic or- ganization. Billie was excited and fulfilled by volunteering her time and energies to vari- ous nonprofits including serving as a docent at the Philadelphia Zoo from 1984 until just before her death. As a docent, she was a member of or chaired several committees and particularly loved doing outreach to chil- dren and juniors. She received awards for contributing “above and beyond”. In addition to her zoo docent activities, for 22 years she volunteered through the Retired Senior Vo- lunteer Program (RSVP), to Hospice Care, Historical Society of Montgomery County and others. Her most recent volunteer activity was with The Clinic, Healthcare for the Unin- sured, in Phoenixville, PA, an organization that was near and dear to her heart. She loved music, art, theater (Broadway and com- munity), the Zoo, Eagles, Phillies, and bridge. She was a world traveler and wherever she went she made lifelong friends. Her quiet manner and gentle disposition only en- hanced her strengths and commanded the re- spect and love from all who knew her. She is survived by her nephews Mark Forman (Cheryl), Mel Woolf (Susan Shermer), and Jeffrey Woolf whom she loved dearly as ex- emplified by her email and license plate “ant- bil”. As an example of her generosity, Billie had requested that her remains be donated. In the interest of safety, no service is being planned at this time. GOLDSTEINS' ROSENBERG'S RAPHAEL-SACKS www.goldsteinsfuneral.com WIENER STRAUSS Michael Alexander Strauss, age 66, beloved son of Mona Strauss of Ocean City and Chestertown, Maryland and the late Dr. Robert Strauss, passed away peacefully at the home of his mother on March 9, 2021 after a short illness. He is sadly missed. A 1976 graduate of Yale University, Michael also held a Master’s degree in Performance from the New England Conservatory of Mu- sic. He played in a number of orchestras in the United States and abroad, as principal vi- olist of Omaha Symphony for eleven years and the Cedar Rapids Symphony for eight years before moving to the Eastern Shore of Maryland in 1999 where he was principal vi- olist of the Mid-Atlantic Symphony Orchestra and a founding member of the Mariner String Quartet. Michael’s role as a teacher and mentor to string students was central to his identity as a musician. In recent years, he conducted a private teaching studio in Upper Gwynedd, Pennsylvania. His lifelong quest for ways to improve the teaching of string in- struments resulted in the development of a unique program that utilizes whole brain learning. Exercise volumes for violin, viola and cello and the teaching manual, Metatech- nical Systems for Strings, accelerate the learning process. The first volume develops tone, note-reading, rhythm, and intonation. The second volume develops shifting, glis- sando, velocity, ear-training, and vibrato. Both students and experienced players bene- fit when they utilize this new and revolution- ary teaching system for string instruments. Michael was also a writer and a poet. Beach Sequences, a volume of poetry written dur- ing a winter sojourn in Ocean City, and A Tao for Now: The Music of Lao-Tsu are being readied for publication. Michael became a father later in life, and relished that role. He was extremely proud of his son Arhon Strauss, a sophomore at Phillips Exeter Academy, who like his father has a writing bent.
