MOSS MENDELSOHN
Frances “Fran” Mendelsohn (nee Forstater),
widow of Dr. Eugene (Bud) Mendelsohn, OB-
GYN, mother of five, beloved mother-in-law,
grandmother of fifteen (one of whom prede-
ceased her), and great grandmother of
twelve, died of natural causes at the age of 96
on April 16, 2020. Fran was born in Phil-
adelphia on November 8, 1923 into the lov-
ing family of Anna and Isaac Forstater and
raised above their corner soda fountain /
candy store at the corner of 30th and Whar-
ton in Grey’s Ferry with her older siblings
Herman, Gertrude, and Morris and her little
brother Sidney. A graduate of South Phil-
adelphia High School and the School of In-
dustrial Art, Fran was a lifelong artist whose
home was filled with her original watercolors.
Fran met Bud on a blind date while she was
in art school and Bud was in medical school
at Penn. Prompted by his new infatuation
with Anna and Isaac’s daughter and his old
love of their ice cream, Bud asked Fran to
marry him on their second date. Prior to their
marriage in 1947, Fran worked as a freelance
artist and decorator at Fay Forman, an ex-
clusive Philadelphia nursery and furniture
boutique. After stints in Bronx, NY, Lafayette,
IN, and Vienna, Austria, Fran and Bud re-
turned to Bud’s hometown of Reading and
settled with their three children Jay, Louise,
and Barbara into suburban life in Pennside,
where Steve and Elaine were added. Raised in
a diverse South Philly neighborhood, Fran
learned early that every person has value and
should be treated with respect. She demon-
strated her positive regard for others in her
daily life and set a strong example for her
children, grandchildren, and great grandchil-
dren of inclusion and charity of spirit. Fran
and Bud travelled extensively throughout
their marriage. Fran delighted in experien-
cing new foods and cultures and decorated
her home with treasures from around the
world. After her children were grown, Fran
returned to her art and began a home-grown
business offering original needlepoint
designs and finished pieces. After Bud died in
2001, Fran moved to The Highlands in Wyo-
missing, where she spent her golden years
among both old and new friends. Besides her
family, Fran’s true passions were dark pret-
zels, Hershey’s chocolate, and Philadelphia
sports teams. Years ago, after one particu-
larly (and literally) heart-wrenching loss by
her beloved “Iggles” to the hated Dallas Cow-
boys, Fran, who was also known to watch
every single Phillies game, was rushed to the
emergency room for a pacemaker that thank-
fully kept Fran alive long enough to see her
Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2018. Fran was
a long-time, active congregant at Kesher Zion
Synagogue and a member of the Reading
Jewish Community Center and Hadassah.
The family suggests those wishing to honor
Fran’s life with a contribution to do so to one
of those organizations or to the Anti-Defama-
tion League.

Judaism isn’t just what we believe, or the prayers
we recite or the laws we observe. It’s also about
the way we live. How we interact with others.
The values we practice. The customs and traditions
we embrace and pass down, from one generation
to the next.
