Father of Sara Gold (Ori Lev) and Judith Gold Friedman (Oren Friedman). Grandfather of Lily, Sam, Benjamin, Micah and Maya. Brother of Harriet Snyder and Marc Gold (Shar- on Stumacher Gold). Lew was a graduate of Cheltenham High School (’55), Penn State University (’59) and Villanova Law School (’62). He enjoyed a law career of over 50 years, first serving as an attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in the Civil Division in Washington D.C. In 1966, he moved back to Philadelphia with his wife Karen, where he began his private practice at Adelman and Lavine specializing in busi- ness law and bankruptcy. Lew rose to prominence at this firm which later be- came known as Adelman, Lavine, Gold and Levin. Lew completed his career at Eckert Seamans where he worked until he retired in 2018. He had a love for the practice of the law which, according to colleagues, he engaged in as a craft. He served as a mentor to numerous attorneys over the course of his career. Lew believed in public service and he supported several charitable institutions re- flecting his diverse interests. Anyone who came in contact with Lew knew that he was passionate about his alma mater Penn State. Lew served as president of the Liberal Arts Alumni Board from 1995 - 1998. He then went on to become presid- ent of the Penn State Alumni Association from 2005 - 2007. Following the tradition of the Gold family and his commitment to the welfare of the aging, Lew served on the Board of the Abramson Senior Care Center for over twenty years. He was a generous supporter of the Center and advised on several committees. He saw it grow into the thriving campus that it is today in Horsham, PA. Lew was also on the Board of the Settlement Music School for many years and served as president of the Jenkintown branch. Lew had both a brilliant mind and a warm heart. He had a deep love for his fam- ily, a commitment to honesty and integrity, and a unique ability to listen and give his full attention to everyone with whom he spoke. He tended to others and avoided attention to himself. Family was the center of Lew’s life. He was a role model to his children, grand- children, siblings, nephews, nieces, great nephews and nieces. He served as a clear example of what it means to live a good life. A funeral was held on March 11, 2020, at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Raphael-Sack Memorial Chapel in Philadelphia. Gellman, 88, an author, public rela- tions consultant and advocate of victims' rights, died April 3 at home and at peace. He built an early career in his native Philadelphia, spent his middle years in Tucson and moved back east to reunite with a woman he loved. Gellman discovered a knack for journalism at Germantown High School, where he was sports editor of the newspaper and stringer for The Evening Bulletin. After graduation he worked weekends on the Bulletin's rewrite desk, became front-page and sports editor of the Germantown Courier in 1951, and mustered into the Army in 1953. After milit- ary service in Japan, Gellman enrolled at Rider College, rose to editor of the Rider News and won the Ferris Prize for finest journalism student. He graduated in 1957, covered the invention of the transistor for Fairchild Publications and then joined the In- ternational Resistance Company in 1959 as Public Relations Director. From 1962 to 1974 he founded and ran Stuart Gellman Asso- ciates, a financial public relations agency. For several golden summers at Camp Rockhill, he was a beloved staff leader by day and the terrifying Green Slime monster by night. In 1978, Gellman moved to Tucson for a life of service. There he devoted hundreds of volun- teer hours each year to give practical aid and comfort to victims of crime and natural dis- asters. He was an Advocate with the Pima County Victim Witness Program from 1981 to 1993, where he co-founded the Critical In- cident Debriefing Team and was active in passage of the Arizona Victim Rights Act. His work with crime victims was featured in Life Magazine (April 1984) and in Reader's Di- gest (Feb. 1985). He served on the local Board of Directors of MADD and as mental health chair of Tucson's Red Cross chapter, receiving its Community Relations award in 2000. In the 1990s and 2000s he was a Pima County steering committee member of the National Disaster Medical System, the South- ern Arizona DUI Task Force, Mental Health li- aison for the Tucson Airport Authority Crisis Response Team and volunteer chaplain at University Medical Center. He converted his large home into a popular and eccentric bed and breakfast, forming lasting friendships with many guests. Gellman was a frequent writer, speaker and trainer on issues of vic- timology, loss, grief and life choices. His op- ed articles appeared in the Arizona Daily Star, Tucson Citizen and Arizona Jewish Post. Twice he was nominated for a Jefferson Award for Public Service. In 1990, Gellman published a book called "COPS: The Men and Women Behind the Badge," which followed a cohort of Tucson police cadets through train- ing and their first year as sworn officers of the law. He made time to chronicle his own family history through more than 1,000 let- ters, oral histories, photos, film clips and videos encompassing six generations. He also taped interviews with his grandchildren for many years. Gellman returned to his Phil- adelphia roots in 2009 to rekindle a relation- ship with an old flame, Mimi Kirk, who be- came his loving companion for the rest of his days. He took up volunteering with the Ger- mantown-based Northwest Victim Services. Gellman is survived by three children from his first marriage to Marcia Jacobs: Barton Gellman (Dafna Linzer), Alan Gellman (Ar- lene Zuckerberg) and Sheri Throlson (Brad Throlson); eight grandchildren (Abigail, Aron, Benjamin, Lily, Megan, Micah, Mira and Nicole); sister Barbara Kates; niece Mimi Kates; nephew Philip Kates (Pamela Kates); and a lifetime of special and loyal friends, es- pecially Mimi Kirk, whose love spanned more than 40 years. A graduate of South Phil- adelphia High School and the School of In- dustrial Art, Fran was a lifelong artist whose home was filled with her original watercolors. Fran met Bud on a blind date while she was in art school and Bud was in medical school at Penn. Prompted by his new infatuation with Anna and Isaac’s daughter and his old love of their ice cream, Bud asked Fran to marry him on their second date. Prior to their marriage in 1947, Fran worked as a freelance artist and decorator at Fay Forman, an ex- clusive Philadelphia nursery and furniture boutique. After stints in Bronx, NY, Lafayette, IN, and Vienna, Austria, Fran and Bud re- turned to Bud’s hometown of Reading and settled with their three children Jay, Louise, and Barbara into suburban life in Pennside, where Steve and Elaine were added. Raised in a diverse South Philly neighborhood, Fran learned early that every person has value and should be treated with respect. She demon- strated her positive regard for others in her daily life and set a strong example for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchil- dren of inclusion and charity of spirit. Fran and Bud travelled extensively throughout their marriage. Fran delighted in experien- cing new foods and cultures and decorated her home with treasures from around the world. After her children were grown, Fran returned to her art and began a home-grown business offering original needlepoint designs and finished pieces. After Bud died in 2001, Fran moved to The Highlands in Wyo- missing, where she spent her golden years among both old and new friends. Besides her family, Fran’s true passions were dark pret- zels, Hershey’s chocolate, and Philadelphia sports teams. Years ago, after one particu- larly (and literally) heart-wrenching loss by her beloved “Iggles” to the hated Dallas Cow- boys, Fran, who was also known to watch every single Phillies game, was rushed to the emergency room for a pacemaker that thank- fully kept Fran alive long enough to see her Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2018. Fran was a long-time, active congregant at Kesher Zion Synagogue and a member of the Reading Jewish Community Center and Hadassah. The family suggests those wishing to honor Fran’s life with a contribution to do so to one of those organizations or to the Anti-Defama- tion League. Sunstein Jr., 98, a Philadelphia in- vestment adviser and philanthropist, died of complications from a stroke Monday, March 23, at the Hill at Whitemarsh in Lafayette Hill, where he had lived for the last 10 years. Born in Philadelphia to Leon C. Sunstein and Florence Gerstley, he graduated from Oak Lane Country Day School and from Cornell University with a bachelor’s degree in eco- nomics in 1943. That same year, he married Emily Weisberg and then shipped out to the Pacific theater as a Navy officer in World War II. On returning home, he joined brother Charles and cousin William Gerstley in the family’s Philadelphia brokerage firm, Gerstley Sunstein & Co. In the 1970s, the business was acquired by Drexel Burnham. Mr. Sun- stein stayed with the merged company as a senior vice president until retiring from that post in 1988. Mr. Sunstein then established his own investment consulting firm in the Suburban Station building and continued working until just before his death. “He was devoted to his profession,” said daughter Lauren. “It kept him going.” Mr. Sunstein was active in many charities and community organizations, and financially supported them. He served on the board of the Jewish Employment and Vocational Service, the American Jewish Committee, and the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. The last group honored him with its Community Award in 1989. “He never flaunted any of his activities to get official recognition,” said his daughter. “But he was proud of the award.” He was a member and supporter of Congreg- ation Rodeph Shalom in Philadelphia. He be- came a leader of the United Way in 1964 and continued that volunteer work for several decades. He also served as a board member and supporter of Hahnemann University Hos- pital. Officials there honored him with the University Medal in 1968. When in the public eye, Mr. Sunstein was a dapper dresser. “He was a bow-tie and pinstripe-suit man,” his daughter said. When not working, he could be found sailing the Piper, his boat. “He sailed all his life, he sailed as many seasons as he possibly could. The Piper wintered in the Chesapeake Bay, and in the spring, he would take it up to Long Island Sound,” his daughter said. He sailed across the Atlantic in a 45 ft. boat with four others in the days before GPS. One day, to his surprise, he re- ceived a sailing magazine in the mail with a picture of his own Hinckley on the cover. A lifelong tennis player, he played doubles well into his 80's. His wife, a scholar and the au- thor of two biographies, died in 2007. Be- sides his daughter Lauren, he is survived by son Paul and daughter Kay Hymowitz; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his half-sister Suz- anne Fleisher Roberts, widow of Ralph J. Roberts, founder of Comcast Corp. A me- morial service was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic and will be held later.
