LEVIN Marvin Levin, 90, who grew the hardware
and appliance store that his father, Harry Lev-
in had started into the Levin’s Furniture & Ap-
pliances died Sunday night at the Abramson
Center for Jewish Life. A long-time resident
of Elkins Park, he previously had a home in
Ventnor NJ and presently in Boynton Beach
FL. He graduated from Northeast High School
in 1944 while working in his parent’s hard-
ware and housewares store after school and
on weekends. He lived in an apartment
above the store on Kensington Ave where the
elevated train frequently roared past his win-
dow. After graduation, he started college at
the University of Pennsylvania, but left after
one year to join the Navy during World War
II. He was honorably discharged from the
Navy in 1946 and returned to the Wharton
School at Penn to finish his bachelor’s de-
gree. Following college he went into his fath-
er’s business full time, which by then, had
expanded into a department store selling ap-
pliances and furniture. He helped grow and
expand the business by adding 12 additional
stores throughout the Philadelphia and New
Jersey areas and offered credit to customers
long before standard credit cards became
common. Levin’s Furniture became a well-
known name in the area, and Marvin enjoyed
the frenzied pace of retailing business, espe-
cially the Christmas shopping season. In his
early 60’s, he retired from the business to
pursue other business interests, including
doing small residential real estate develop-
ment. He married Stefani Lundy in 1957 and
enjoyed 60 years of happy marriage together.
He was an avid golfer, tennis player and
swimmer. He was a member of Meadow-
lands Country Club, Ashbourne Country Club
and Logan Tennis Club. He also loved to
travel. He and his wife Stefani, took frequent
trips to distant countries, some of them very
adventuresome. They also traveled to Israel
many times, including the beloved Mission
1000 trip. Marvin has been involved in nu-
merous charities and community activities.
He has served on the board of trustees of
Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia,
was a board member of the Abramson Cen-
ter for Jewish Life, and a Board Member of
Boys Town Jerusalem. He has also been a
long-time member of Adath Jeshurun Syn-
agogue. He has continued his parents repu-
tation for “giving back” to the community and
has always been a generous supporter of
good causes with both his time and his
money. He is survived by his wife, Stefani,
his son, Adam, (daughter-in-law Caren), two
granddaughters, Jessica and Sarah, and sis-
ter, Cissie Vizak Frantz.
