A long-time resident of Elkins Park, he previously had a home in Ventnor NJ and presently in Boynton Beach FL. He graduated from Northeast High School in 1944 while working in his parent’s hard- ware and housewares store after school and on weekends. After graduation, he started college at the University of Pennsylvania, but left after one year to join the Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and returned to the Wharton School at Penn to finish his bachelor’s de- gree. Following college he went into his fath- er’s business full time, which by then, had expanded into a department store selling ap- pliances and furniture. He helped grow and expand the business by adding 12 additional stores throughout the Philadelphia and New Jersey areas and offered credit to customers long before standard credit cards became common. Levin’s Furniture became a well- known name in the area, and Marvin enjoyed the frenzied pace of retailing business, espe- cially the Christmas shopping season.
